He coughed up a mouth full of dirt and began to take in his surroundings. He was in a ravine of sorts, he had no clue how he had gotten down there. He must have fallen. He tried to stand, but everything felt wrong. Every time he tried to stand on two legs, he would fall back down on all fours. He saw a pool of water nearby and crawled over to it. As he looked into the pool his eyes went wide in shock. Tie had somehow become some quadruped feline thing with rabbit like ears and

1. A Kind Boy Called Puffin: Calm Sea

🐧 There was a world, almost like ours, but not quite, where a banished prince was enslaved by monsters, but he fought back, and made them his friends. This is his story. New Birmingham City, State of New Birmingham “Come for the beaches, stay for our AI future” Martin was paddling on his surfski, away from the world. His craft; he'd have told you all about it; was a very specific kind of kayak, made to ride the swell, as fast as dreams go. That day the wind was gone, the sea calm. That was perfect on its own way, so the boy could focus on perfection, a tranquil struggle to make the most of each paddle stroke, to make music on the air, to reach the sublime from simple forms. Rrrrrr–shhh, Anne, his coach, was approaching to his right, the outboard engine purring. ‘Left arm, must keep you high.’, the boy thought. Martin was expecting Anne to find some flaw in his paddling, in truth there's always some flaw. But, sometimes, it's better to leave a young rider, a

Chronicles of the Keyblade: Thieves of the Night

The Heist, Take Two My heart wouldn't slow down. It was pounding so hard that I could hear it pounding in my ear. Ty had put on his Chrome Wings and I was standing close to him, with Riku and Roxas on either side. Each of us had drawn our swords… or blades in this case.Ty tightly gripped my hand as we waited for everyone to get into place. It didn't feel like Mephilis was here, but I was still worried, and he could tell. I look at him as he grasped my hand. He blinked, but smiled, mouthing 'It'll be alright.'I smile back and take slow breaths in an attempt to calm my racing heart. I look around, where everyone was getting into position. Sl...

Chronicles of the Keyblade: Meet the Doctor

Chapter 6: A trip down Memory Lane The place was warm, almost too warm for Ty's taste. It made the blade's hilt slick in his hands. But then again, he was strongest when he was with Riku and Roxas, both Keyblade Bearers. He remembered the first fight he and his friends won, when they were in the Dragon Worlds. They used a Trinity Kingdom Blast, topped with Emily's Super Form. That helped them defeat Esau, a dark angel that Mephilis hired.A hand brought him back to the present. Joe was looking at him, slightly worried. Joe had been his bud for the past four years, it did feel good to have Jade and Joe back."You okay?" Joe asked."Yeah." Ty ...

Almost to the end, folks.Chapter 12: Choose WiselyDanny and Ryan crawls through the small opening until they enter some sort of room which appears to be a temple of some sorts. Kingdom Hearts: Heart of the Cards - CH7

Chapter 7: Attack from Robots and the Deep Star Chips: Yugi: 3/Joey: 2/Sora: 2 It was a little bit since Joey’s duel with Mai, as the gang were now in another dueling arena with Sora on the blue side and a boy with short brown hair on the red side. His name was Jon, and he was wearing a white shirt and blue jeans. "Hey, spiky! Don’t go crying to mommy when I beat you." said Jon. “Oh, I won’t, because I don’t plan on losing!” Sora retaliated. “Since you only have two Star Chips and I have five, I only have to wager two.” Jon stated as he and Sora took two Star Chip off of their Dueling Glove, and placed it at the top of the dueling mat. “Unlike the other fields on the island, this one doesn’t have any, so neither of us get a field power bonus. Think you can manage?” “Yeah.” “Then let’s duel!” Jon shouted. LP: Sora: 2000/Jon: 2000 “I’ll make the first move.” Sora stated as he drew a card and added it into his hand. “I summon Elemental HERO Clayman in defense mode!” He yelled as a humanoid monster made of stone appeared in front of Sora as it crossed its arms like he was defending him. Elemental HERO Clayman Attribute: EARTH Monster Type: Warrior Level: 4 ATK/DEF: 800/2000 “Then I’ll set one card face down, and end my turn.” Sora said as one of his Spell/Trap Zones started flashing yellow. Jon nodded and then drew his card, grinning as he saw the cards in his hand. “I think I’ll start out nice and easy, by playing the spell card Confiscation!” “Okay, so what does it do?” Sora asked. “What it does is allow me to pay 1000 Life Points to take a look at your hand and toss one of your cards to the Graveyard.” Jon explained, as Sora nodded and showed his hand on his mat, so they could appear on his opponents monitor. LP: Sora: 2000/Jon: 1000 “Monster Reborn, The Warrior Returning Alive, Hero Signal, and Card of Sanctity. Very interesting choices, but which shall I pick?” Jon questioned as he looked at each card carefully. “I choose Monster Reborn!” ‘Not good. Monster Reborn has the power to bring back a creature from either player’s Graveyard!’ Yugi thought, knowing how useful that card would have been later in the duel. “Now I’ll set two cards face down, but they won’t be on the field very long because I play Emergency Provisions! Now I can destroy the face-downs I played, and gain 1000 Life Points for each one.” Jon said as his two cards were destroyed and his Life Points increased. LP: Sora: 2000/Jon: 3000 “Next, I play Heavy Storm! This magic card destroys every other Spell and Trap card that’s out on the field.” Jon explained as a heavy wind picked up and Sora’s face-down, which was Negate Attack, was destroyed. “And last, but not least, I summon Ancient Gear Golem!” In front of Joe stood a giant robotic monster that one could clearly see the working gears on it. Ancient Gear Golem Attribute: EARTH Monster Type: Machine Level: 8 ATK/DEF: 3000/3000 “Wow, a monster that can stand toe to toe with the Blue-Eyes White Dragon?!” Joey exclaimed. “Oh man, Sora’s monster won’t stand a chance!” Tristan complained. “Its defense points are too low.” “This doesn't look good.” Tea mumbled. “And it’s about to look a whole lot worse,” Yugi said. “When Ancient Gear Golem attacks a monster in defense mode, the difference between its attack points and the defending monster’s defense points are dealt to the opponent as damage.” “But that would mean Sora’s Life Points are gonna take a hit!” Joey cried as everyone looked at the monster in horror. “Now Golem, attack with Mechanized Melee!” Jon ordered as his Ancient Gear Golem’s red mono-eye glowed slightly before pulling back its fist and sucker-punched Sora’s Clayman into pieces. LP: Sora: 1000/Jon: 3000 “I end my turn.” Jon finished. “Then it’s back to me!” Sora yelled as he drew a card from his deck, revealing it to be Winged Kuriboh. ‘Oh hey bud. Ready to help me take this thing down?’ He questioned in his thoughts before hearing a cooing sound and saw his card wink at him, making Sora smile. “Okay, I summon Winged Kuriboh in defense mode!” He declared, as his monster appeared on the field. “Next, I play one card face-down and end my turn.” “You have got to be kidding me.” Jon teased. “A Kuriboh to me is rather pedestrian; even one with wings, its defense points are no match for my Ancient Gear Golem! It’s a rookie mistake.” He then drew his next card.” Okay Ancient Gear Golem, attack that Kuriboh with Mechanized Melee!” Once again, the giant walking gear monster reared back a fist and threw a punch at the tiny creature and shattered the hologram to pieces. ‘Sorry Winged Kuriboh.’ Sora mentally said. “Ugh, this field must be bugged or something. Your Life Points haven’t changed.” Jon said. “The field’s fine,” Sora simply shrugged. “On the turn Winged Kuriboh is destroyed, I take no damage for the rest of the turn.” This info actually took Jon by surprise, not knowing that information, before regaining his composure. “Fine, I guess your little lame monster saved you there.” Jon taunted as Sora placed Winged Kuriboh into his Graveyard. “Now hang on!” Sora yelled back. “Just because you beat him doesn’t give the excuse to call him lame!” “Oh yeah, I forgot how some duelists get attached to their monsters,” Jon taunted again. “I'm sorry.” “Yeah, well you should be sorry,” Sora said as he revealed his trap, making a unique ‘H’ symbol appear in the sky. “Because by attacking my Winged Kuriboh you set off my trap card, Hero Signal! Now I can bring out another Elemental Hero, and I choose Burstinatrix!” From a column of red flames, a gray-skinned woman in a red body-suit appeared and landed on the field. Elemental HERO Burstinatrix Attribute: FIRE Monster Type: Warrior Level: 3 ATK/DEF: 1200/8000 “Now it’s my move!” Sora said, drawing another card. “Okay Winged Kuriboh, this one’s for you! I play Card of Sanctity! Now we both draw until we have six cards in our hands!” Sora and Jon drew until they drew the amount they needed, while Sora smirked at what was now in his hand. “Next, I will summon Elemental HERO Avian in defense mode!” As he placed the card horizontally on the field, a green bird man appeared and knelt next to Burstinatrix. Elemental HERO Avian Attribute: WIND Monster Type: Warrior Level: 3 ATK/DEF: 1000/1000 “Now that’s just stupid, I can just…” Jon taunted as he was about to draw, only for Sora to interrupt him. “I didn’t say I was done yet,” Sora stated. “Because I play Polymerization, to fuse Elemental HERO Avian and Elemental HERO Burstinatrix to summon Elemental HERO Flame Wingman!” Avian and Burstinatrix jumped in the air before they combined to form a new creature with one white wing on its left side and a dragon’s head on its right side. Elemental HERO Flame Wingman Attribute: WIND Monster Type: Warrior Level: 6 ATK/DEF: 2100/1200 “You can’t expect that monster to destroy my Golem, it only has 2100 attack points” said Jon looking at Flare Wingman.  “True, but that's why I have this field Spell, Skyscraper!” said Sora playing his field card into the field zone, causing the entire field to change into a large city with a bunch of tall buildings. Everyone noticed that Flare Wingman was standing on the tallest building.  Jon observed the field spell with a sneer. "Okay, this is good. But this silly little field spell hasn't lowered my monster's points by even a little bit." "Nope, but it raises my Flame Wingman's by 1000 if he battles a monster stronger than him. And, look at that, your Golem has 900 more than he does." Sora grinned. “Oh no!” Jon shouted.  “Now Flame Wingman, attack that Golem with Skydive Scorcher!" Elemental HERO Flame Wingman ATK/DEF: 2100/1200 > 3100/1200 The monster jumped into the air and engulfed his body in flames before he dove and slammed into the Golem, smashing it to pieces; much to Joe's horror. LP: Sora: 1000/Jon: 2900 "And thanks to his special ability, you also take damage to your monster's attack points." Flame Wingman stood in front of Jon and shot fire out towards the boy. LP: Sora: 1000/Joe: 0 The monsters vanished as the duel came to an end. “And that’s game,” Sora said with a grin. Everyone cheered on seeing such a good duel. Even Joey and Yugi were clapping on seeing a good duel. The holographic monsters vanished and Jon came towards Sora before he held out three of his five Star Chips. “Wait, I thought that it was only two Star Chips.” “It was. The extra is a gift and an apology.” Jon said, putting the Star Chips in Sora’s hand. “No one has ever beaten my Golem before. I got too cocky, and that kind of attitude is what cost me the duel. I'm sorry.” “Apology accepted.” Sora said, putting the Star Chips in his Dueling Glove as Jon walked away. Everyone suddenly heard a rumbling noise and turned to Joey, who was the source of the sound, making the blonde blush and chuckle sheepishly. “Man, all of this dueling is making me hungry. Did any of you guys remember to bring any food?” he asked. “Sorry, Joey.” everyone, except Sora, said. “What were we thinking coming here without bringing any food? How are we going to get through the rest of the tournament?!” Joey exclaimed. “Good question, Joey,” Yugi agreed. “This dueling really takes it out of you and I haven’t seen any food stands or restaurants since we got here.” "We have to do something fast!" Tea said, her control breaking down every second. "I've got to have my five basic food groups or it's... metabolic meltdown!" "Five basic food groups?" Sora asked, trying to count the food groups on his fingers. "Hey, chill out, you guys, I've got it covered," Tristan said. He took a book out of his backpack. "Ta-dah, the Great Outdoor Survival Guide!" "Can we eat it?" Joey asked dryly. "Better than that, it lists all the plants, roots, berries, and grasses we can eat." The others suddenly felt sick. Sora voiced all of their thoughts. "All of a sudden, I'm not feeling very hungry." "Do I look like a squirrel, ya' big doofus?!" He sniffed the air. "I don't need your dumb buck anyhow, I smell something cooking that way!" And he ran off towards the shoreline. "He's hallucinating," Tea decided. "Maybe not," Tristan figured. "Remember, it wasn't his brain that beat Mai, it was his nose." ---------------- The source of what Joey smelled was three fish cooking over an open fire. Joey's mouth was watering and even Yugi had to admit they smelled good. Finally, Joey couldn't take it and ran for it. "Hey, what makes you think those fish are yours to take?" Tea asked. "Hey, don't worry about it. We eat first and ask questions later." "You know, I think Joey once got food poisoning from that philosophy," Tristan commented. "You're really not helping things, Tristan," Sora said. "He'd say anything to fill his belly," Tea commented. "Some people just have no self-control," Tristan said, nodding sagely as he joined Joey "This isn't right…" Sora said. "Guys, I have something in my bag you can eat." "You brought food?" asked Tristan, blinking his wide brown eyes. "Mhm. It's not much but we can all share -" "Now that is what you're supposed to do," said a new voice suddenly startling Joey and Tristan. Suddenly, a figure was climbing over the edge of the cliff. The boy had spiky black hair and wore cut-off jeans and a dueling glove. He had a harpoon with a fish skewered on it. "How dare you steal my fish, don't you have any man..." A tidal wave splashed against the shore and washed him over the cliff. Fortunately, he survived. "So can we eat?" Joey asked like he didn't hear the boy's rant. "Let's try that again," the boy said seething. "I knew this was a bad idea," Tea said as she tried to uproot Sora's head from the ground. "How dare you steal my fish, you bottom-dwelling thieves!" "Chill out, guy, it's just a few fish," Joey said. "Fish that do not belong to you! And to steal a fisherman's catch proves you have no honor!" "Hey, wait a minute," Yugi said, eyeing the glove. "Aren't you Mako Tsunami, the top-rank ocean-based Duelist?" "And who might you be?" The boy asked in return. "Hey yeah, you're that freaky fish guy," Joey agreed. "I AM NOT A FREAKY FISH GUY! I am Mako Tsunami, Duelist extraordinaire of the seven seas!" Mako paused in his introduction as Tea (who had finally got Sora's head up to fresh air) burst into laughter. "Uh... what are you laughing about?" "Your head! You got company." Tea pointed to the small squid that attached itself to Mako's hair. Mako growled and threw the squid back into the ocean (much to Joey and Tristan's dismay). "I'm Yugi Moto," Yugi introduced. "Sorry about your fish." Mako gasped, "You're Yugi Moto, the only Duelist to ever defeat Seto Kaiba?" He gasped in shock. Yugi nodded, making the ocean duelist laugh. "What a surprise! It will be a great honor to face you in a duel." "Same here, Mako." "I must apologize, I've been ungracious." He turned to the others. "If you are friends of Yugi Moto, please, come sit down and eat your fill." And that's what they did, enjoying the meal made by the unexpected duelist. "That was good, Mako," Tea commented when they were done. "Where did you learn to cook so well?" "I had to fend for myself since I was a tadpole but it was my father who taught me how to fish and cook." "So what brings you here to the competition?" Yugi asked. "I was raised on a fishing boat where I learned to love the sea," Mako began. "So if I win here, I would be able to get a vessel of my very own. Of course, I'll have to beat a few Duelists first." He laughed hardily. "Your own boat? That would be so cool, living out on the blue open sea." "Yes, the ocean is amazing," Mako agreed. "And we have shared a special bond since I was born. I can tell when the sea is happy by the way it sparkles... and when it is angry, by the shifting tides." "Yeah," Sora said. "I’m an islander, so I know what that’s like, Mako." "Well, it's been great, Mako, thanks. You really saved our hides," Joey said. "Leaving so soon, are you?" Mako asked in what appeared to be disappointment. “Yeah, there’s still lots of duelists to meet and defeat,” Joey said with a smile. “Maybe we’ll meet up later in the competition,” Yugi said as he and the others started to walk off when a spear suddenly came flying and embedded the ground close to his foot, making him and the others freeze, wide eyed with shock. “What’s the big idea!” Joey demanded in a yell as they all turned to face Mako. “You coulda hurt someone!” "I treated you to dinner; perhaps you will honor me to a duel." Mako announced. "You try to skewer Yugi and expect him to accept your challenge for a duel?" Tea said with rising fury. "Wait, Tea," Sora whispered. "Look, the harpoon almost hit Yugi but it didn't. If Mako was truthful and he really is an expert in the sea, then he could've easily pierced one of Yugi's organs with it, but he didn't. I bet for him, that's an equivalent of throwing down the gauntlet, a challenge." "He could've just asked him instead of spearing him." Tea deadpanned. "He's nuts," Joey commented, not hearing Sora's explanation. "No but I am an expert fisherman and you have taken the bait." "What bait?" Sora asked. "Why, the fish of course. I laid it out and lured you four right to it." He pointed to Joey, Tristan, Sora, and Tea. "But I never expected to catch Yugi Moto. I reeled in another Duelist a short time ago, but he was not a worthy catch." He pointed to Yugi. "But a duel against you would be an excellent test!" The powers of the Millennium Puzzle were released into Yugi as he switched into what Tea affectionately called 'Dueling Mode.' "Mako Tsunami, I accept your challenge," he said. Sora blew on his whistle and a dueling arena rose from the sea. Yugi, Mako, and Sora took their places. The arena was split into two halves, one half was land and the other was sea. "Name your stakes," Yugi requested. "I'll wager two stars." "Two stars," Yugi agreed. They each removed the stars from their gloves and placed them on the table. "Let's duel!" Yugi and Mako cried out. Mako was ecstatic about dueling Yugi Moto. ‘Finally, a real test of my dueling strength,’ he thought. The life point counters were set and the duel began. LP: Yugi: 2000/Mako: 2000 "This should be some match," Tea commented. "Sink that soggy sucker, Yugi!" Joey cheered. "I'm curious to see how you deal with my mighty denizens of the deep," Mako said, summoning a monster. But to Yugi and the other's surprise, it didn't appear. Rather, the only clue that it had been summoned was that an area of Mako's sea-side of the field was glowing. This could only mean one thing: the monster was under water. "How can I choose what card to play when I don't even know what I am fighting?" Yugi wondered. "This I don't like," Joey muttered. "The sea conceals many things beneath its shifting surface," Mako commented. "As long as that thing stays submerged, I can't attack." "Oh, I promise it won't stay submerged for very long," Mako assured him. ‘I better prepare for the worst,’ Yugi decided. ‘With as strong of a defense as possible.’ ‘Clearly this is Yugi's first encounter with sea-based Duel Monsters,’ Mako thought, noticing Yugi's bewildered expression. ‘He will learn first hand what a powerful ally the sea can be. It gives my creatures a field power bonus, and it conceals them, making their stealthy attacks even more lethal.’ "How can Yugi fight what he can't see?" Joey asked. "This isn't good," Tea said. "Something fishy is going on here," Tristan complained. "On the contrary, it's all on the up and up," Sora revealed. "It's like what Weevil said, the fields chosen for each duel are exact representations of surrounding environments. I bet anything Mako's monster is fish-related, and can survive under water." "It seems that my ocean-based strategy has caught you completely by surprise, Yugi," Mako called. ‘Maybe so,’ Yugi admitted. ‘But I can still raise a strong defense.’ "I call upon the Horned Imp!" A rock-colored imp with a horn on his head appeared. Horned Imp Attribute: DARK Monster Type: Fiend Level: 4 ATK/DEF: 1300/1000 "Now, Fiend Kraken, ensnare him!" Mako ordered. Giant tentacles lashed out from the water and pulled Yugi's imp apart. Fiend Kraken Attribute: WATER Monster Type: Aqua Level: 4 ATK/DEF: 1200/1400 > 1560/1820 "You're good, Mako, a brilliant opening play," Yugi congratulated. "I am pleased you appreciate it," Mako replied. "Though I doubt your Imp did." LP: Yugi: 1740/Mako: 2000 "Well, now I know what I'm up against." "Yes, the mighty ocean commands respect! As do the creatures who inhabit it! ‘Maybe I can prepare an attack that would destroy his monsters even though I can't see him,’ Yugi figured. "I summon the Feral Imp!" he yelled as a familiar green winged imp from his duel with Weevil appeared.. Feral Imp Attribute: DARK Monster Type: Fiend Level: 4 ATK/DEF: 1300/1400 "I am aware of your feral monster," Mako said as he summoned a monster in response. "And it's an electrical attack. So for my next card..." He set a monster in defense mode. A loud cry could be heard from the sea side's depth. "I don't like the sound of that," Yugi said. Mako laughed. "That is the battle cry of my creature!" "It'll be crying all right," Yugi said, laying down another card. "Once I combine my Feral Imp with the magical Horn of the Unicorn!" A golden horn replaced the Feral Imp's normal one as its attack and defense points were raised. Feral Imp ATK/DEF: 1300/1400 > 2000/2100 "All right," Joey said. "What?" Tea asked. "Yugi can't see Mako's monsters, but he knows they're under water and water conducts electricity!" "So they're vulnerable to the Feral Imp's electrical attack!" Tea said, beginning to catch on. "That is so smart!" "Magic Lightning Attack!" The Imp shot electricity into the water. "It's a fish fry," Joey jokes. But Mako didn't seem upset, quite the contrary. And soon, the reason revealed itself. His life points weren't decreasing. "Your strategy has failed, Yugi," Mako said. "But how?" "As a sea-based Duelist, I'm perfectly aware that water conducts electricity. So I played with my Giant Jellyfish. It has the magical ability to absorb all electrical attacks." Mako counterattacked with his Fiend Kraken. "Did you enjoy my Kraken's embrace?" He asked, laughing. Feral Imp ATK/DEF: 2000/2100 > 1300/1400 LP: Yugi: 1480/Mako: 2000 ‘I've never dueled against creatures like these before. It feels like I'm battling against Mako's sea monsters and the awesome power of the ocean itself.’ Yugi thought to himself "Do any of your monsters have the ability to stand up to my ocean pets?" Mako asked "I have the power of Silver Fang! And I combine it with the magic of the full moon to double his ferocity!" Yugi replied as he summoned a new monster, a large white wolf with sharp, soulful dark eyes as it howled at a full moon above the field. Silver Fang Attribute: EARTH Monster Type: Beast Level: 3 ATK/DEF: 1200/800 > 1500/1100 "Ferocious indeed," Mako said laughing. "But the moon also controls the tides causing them to rise allowing me to unleash my next great creature. Arise, mighty Kairyu-Shin!" Everyone could only watch and stare as his monster emerged from the sea tides. It could only be described as an eel like with a long, serpentine body that was a deep blue with a whitish-beige underbelly, it was eyeless and had a mouth full of jagged, sharp, red-colored teeth. Kairyu-Shin Attribute: WATER Monster Type: Sea Serpent Level: 5 ATK/DEF: 1800/1500 > 2340/1950 "Behold, the mighty Kairyu-Shin, a creature so massive that when it rises up from the ocean's depths, it creates its own tidal wave! Your creature's brave, Yugi, but it can't stand up to Kuriyoshi's mighty tidal attack." The monster unleashed the tidal wave drowning Silver Fang. "But my Kuriyoshi did more than just wash your dog away. It considerably altered our playing field." “My land!” Yugi exclaimed as he saw his side of the field, once a rocky shore, was submerged in water, save for one speck of land, which now served as a lonely isle among Mako’s expanded field, “His attack nearly wiped away the entire land-based field!” "In my previous duels, Kairyu-Shin’s attack is so massive that it leaves nothing in its wake. I think it was quite considerate of my pet to leave you a patch of dirt to stand on. Or does it make you uneasy to be surrounded on all sides of the sea?" Mako's expression suddenly grew dark. "All men give pause before the mighty ocean, even the greatest of fishermen." "You mean your father..." Mako dropped his cards on the table. "My father was a great fisherman. He taught me my love of the sea. But... one day, the sea... took him. I loved going out on the boat with my father. It was just the two of us and the big, beautiful, ocean. We never suspected that the sea would turn on us. It was a bright day when it happened. My father suspected a storm had been brewing and didn't want to take any chances. He told me that it was better not to challenge the mighty sea. And he was right. The calm ocean turned into a wallowing maelstrom! It rocked our boat all over the place. My father strapped me to the main mast to keep me from falling over, but it was pointless. A tidal wave capsized our boat. When the storm died out, our little boat had been washed ashore. My father was right, I had been safe, but he... because he had stopped to tie me down, he had no time to secure himself!" "Poor guy," Sora muttered. "I've all but given up hope, but then I noticed that our lifeboat was missing. I know my father is alive. So I will win this contest, buy a ship, and sail the seven seas until I find him! That is why I duel, Yugi, that is why I must win and you must lose." "I understand, Mako, believe me," Yugi empathized with his opponent. "But I can't let you win." The others were taken aback by Mako's story. "Mako duels for his Dad like Yugi duels for his Grandpa," Joey related. "Whoa, this is too intense." ‘With so little land left, I really need to make this next play count. I need something that will help me turn the tides. Something like... this card!’ Yugi thought. "Giant Soldier of Stone!" He summoned a monster that could only be described as a golem carved out of large boulders styled like a warrior with a pair of swords on its back, standing imposingly in a kneeling position. Giant Soldier of Stone Attribute: EARTH Monster Type: ROCK Level: 3 ATK/DEF: 1300/2000 "You may have shrunk my battlefield down to an island, Mako, but my Stone Soldier still gets a field power bonus!" Giant Soldier of Stone ATK/DEF: 1300/2000 > 1690/2600 "Your massive monster can barely fit on that rock let alone do battle with my mighty undersea attack force!" Mako exclaimed, as Yugi didn't retort. "And he's surrounded on all sides by the ocean, making him easy prey for... Great White Terror! A glow appeared beneath the water like before, but this time, the monster jumped out of the water, revealing itself it live up to its name, resembling a Great White Shark, but strangely had a pair of human arms perturbing from its fins. Great White Terror Attribute: WATER Monster Type: Aqua Level: 5 ATK/DEF: 1500/1200 > 1950/1560 “This monster will lead my other deep-sea soldiers in an all-out ocean onslaught!" "Yugi's guy is outnumbered four to one," Joey realized. "I don't like those odds," Tristan added. ‘Looks like his stone soldier is about to become fish food,’ Sora thought. "This is it, Yugi! It's over, but you dueled honorably." "You're a fair and worthy opponent yourself, Mako, but I also duel with the fate of a loved one at stake." Yugi responded, returning Mako’s smile, though there was a resolve in his eyes. "And I can't afford to lose. I switch my Stone Soldier to attack mode!" "Attack mode, but why? He can't attack my sea monsters while they're underwater." Mako stated as the giant stone man slowly rose from his kneeling position to stand at full height. "But his target isn't your sea monsters. I'm having him attack a card I laid on the field myself." Yugi explained, pointing at the moon, which still hung above the field, making everyone gasp in shock. "No!" Mako exclaimed. The Stone Soldier drew one of his swords (also made of rock). "Now, Stone Soldier, destroy the moon!" The Soldier stabbed the moon and broke it apart. "As you yourself said, Mako, the moon does control the tides; its ebb and its flow. So I ordered my Stone Soldier to obliterate the moon causing the ocean's tide to reverse and recede." The tide literally went out. Now it was more land than sea and Mako's monsters were beached. "And now I'll deliver the final blow. I combine my Curse of Dragon with the magic of the burning land card to wipe out your life points!" Yugi's skeleton dragon appeared and fried Mako's fish. LP: Yugi: 1480/Mako: 0 Mako almost fell to his knees from both shock and despair, shock from the suddenness of the roundabout move and despair from the loss itself, but caught himself. "Alright Yugi!" Tea cheered as Joey and Tristan grinned at each other, while Sora just smiled. "To destroy your own moon was a truly unexpected but brilliant move Yugi," Mako stated before grinning broadly, "What a grand duel, I salute you my friend!" He gave a cheerful, mock salute, bearing no ill will, which made everyone smile "This victory certainty wasn't an easy one Mako," Yugi complemented back as they got off the platforms, "You're an impressive duelist yourself, well deserving of your title." Mako handed Yugi his fairly-earned Star Chips as the arena disappeared back beneath the real ocean. "I am down to one Star Chip," Mako said with a serious undertone beneath his otherwise up-beat voice, "But I will start over." "There are eight finalist spots," Yugi acknowledged, "I bet you'll do well." "You'd win that wager!" Mako laughed. "He better, cause now I really want a shot at ya at the finals," Joey added and Sora nodded in agreement. "It'll be a match to look forward to," Mako chuckled as Sora spoke up. "Mako," He started getting his attention and surprised everyone with a bow as he said, "I'm sorry about your father," Mako starred in surprise, blinking, of all things he expected him to say, that wasn't one of them, as he straightened, she explained, "I know it's silly, cause it probably happened a while ago, but..." He sucked in a breath to get her next words out, willing his eyes to not shed tears, "I know what it's like to lose someone close to you…" The other teens and Mako's eyes widened, "And it hurts...no matter how much time passes or how many times you try to accept it...it hurts...so...I just wanted to say, I'm sorry." He gripped on Kairi’s wayfinder as Yugi whispered in sympathy, "Sora..." Sora had his eyes squeezed shut, waiting for the negative reaction he was expecting, but imagine her surprise when he felt a hand on her head. He looked up in surprise to see an understanding, yet very grateful look on Mako's face as he said, "Thank you...Sora..." He smiled as he replied, "You're welcome...Mako..." They parted with friendly grins, which made everyone else smile, though Yugi's was a little tight. The moment was ruined by a loud rumbling sound, which was coming from Mako's stomach, making him laugh, his boisterous and gleeful attitude returning, "It appears that duel made me hungry!" He suddenly turned and ran at the cliff-edge, shouting in exhilaration and excitement, "Time for Mako to fish again!" Mako dived with a final yell, "Farewell!" Everyone rushed to the edge to see him swimming off to catch more fish. "Goodbye Mako!" Sora called with a wide smile as he waved, "See you in the finals!" "We best be moving on," Yugi stated. "Yeah, before Mako decides he wants a rematch," Joey joked as the rest followed. "You know, Mako really wasn't such a bad guy after all," Sora said. "I guess not every Duelist is out to stop you, Yugi." "Oh man, we forgot to ask Mako to bring us back some fish," Joey realized. "We'd have to duel him for it," Yugi pointed out. The others laughed. "But seriously though, did any of you guys get anything?" "Hey, isn't this how we got into this mess?" Sora asked. "No problem, there's always my Great Outdoor Survival Guide." Tristan stated. "Here, Tristan, eat as many pages as you want," Joey joked as they left Mako's camp site. —------------- Author’s Note: Sorry if it took forever to post this chapter. I was having trouble with what to do with Sora’s duel. It may be similar to Jaden’s duel with Crowler, but there are some differences. Thanks goes to KeybladeKing for helping me with this chapter. Kingdom Hearts: Heart of the Cards - CH8

Chapter 8: Everything’s Relative Star Chips: Yugi: 5/Joey: 2/Sora:  Atop the high hill of Duelist Kingdom, within one of the rooms of a tower, a rope of sheets were thrown out of one of the lower windows as the person inside, a young boy, shorter than Yugi, peered out of it cautiously, wearing a purple beanie and a dark blue bandanna over his face. Seeing the coast clear he started to climb down the rope of sheets, and was about halfway down when he realized he hadn’t used enough sheets and gulped, seeing he was still rather high up. But then, the sheet he was holding onto began to untie itself from the rest, making him look up in alarm, but before he could scurry back up, the sheet came undone and he screamed as he fell, but thankfully, there were large bushes at the bottom to cushion his fall. As he crawled out of them, he rubbed his back for a moment before hurrying away. Back in the tower, the door opened as one of Pegasus’s men walked in, carrying a tray of food for the boy. “Here you go runt, your daily gruel.” he said before seeing the rope of sheets as he then rushed to the window and looked down. “Oh no, he’s gone!” ---------------- (Play Kingdom Hearts II Organization XIII Theme) Meanwhile, in the observation room, Pegasus had taken a break from watching duel after duel, especially as time between duels bagen to get longer with each elimination. “I must say,” he said, looking away from his comic book that he was reading and turned to someone he was not expecting as Luxu was leaning against the wall. When he first arrived, he had told Pegasus everything he knew about Sora and the Keyblade, including the accomplishments Sora had achieved. “From what you told me, this Sora boy is more interesting than I thought he would ever be.” “Well,” Luxu said. “The fact that he survived after misusing The Power of Waking, the kid can be full of surprises.” Pegasus chuckled at Luxu’s comment, as the door opened and the man who had been in the tower walked in. "Master Pegasus, a thousand pardons for disturbing you both, sir.” “Gorgonzola cheese and the world’s finest wine, along with my favorite comic book and a very special guest; times like these are more precious to me than any other, you do realize that, don't you, Croquet?” Pegasus asked as he merely glanced over his shoulder. “I do, sir,” Croquet replied, tone holding a touch of urgency, “But the prisoner has escaped.” "Which one?" Pegasus asked as if it didn't really matter. "The boy we imprisoned in the north tower. I have my men searching the island but... we haven't found him yet." "I guess he didn't appreciate your hospitality.” Luxu joked. “Well, no matter, I know where our little escapee is heading." Pegasus smirked as he lowered a screen on the wall. "He'll seek out Yugi. Computer, give me a status of the Duelist Kingdom Duel Monsters Tournament." "Six hours have passed since the tournament began," the computer said, showing images of dueling arenas and the duelists sitting in a boat, waiting to be taken off the island. "Twelve of the participants have already been eliminated and are currently being deported off the island by boat." "I see... and what of Yugi and Sora?" “Both Yugi Muto and Sora have each won five Star Chips.” The computer replied, pulling up head-shot photos of the two in question side-by-side. Under each of them were ten stars, which were half gold, half black, indicating their process. "How wonderful, I expected no less. They are determined to work their way up in the standings in order to gain entry to my castle, which is exactly what I want them to do. We'll just keep our spy-cams trained on our little star Duelists. Eventually, the little run-away will confront Yugi for reasons of his own." "Very wise, sir," Croquet complimented. "Actually, the boy escaping fits perfectly into my plans. And I have such special plans in store for Yugi today. Plans I hope he finds as entertaining as I do." Pegasus erupted into another laugh, this one more sinister than the one he was displaying before. (End Kingdom Hearts II Organization XIII Theme) ---------------- Meanwhile, walking down one of the forest trails, our heroes were considering what to do next as Sora was looking at his Gummi Phone, trying to call his friends back home to let them know he’s was okay, only to keep getting the response, “I’m sorry, but the number you dialed doesn’t exist. Please try dialing the correct number.” “So much for that idea…” Sora sighed in defeat as he put the device away. ‘The more we get into this tournament, the more confusing Sora gets.’ Yugi thought, looking at the Keyblade Wielder. ‘First it was when he revealed he had some sort of magic to save Joey back on the boat, then he defended us when those Heartless attacked us earlier, now he said he recently experienced losing someone close to him. I know he said he would tell us everything tonight, but that just makes it even more mysterious.’ Suddenly a loud scream penetrated the quietness of the forest interrupting Sora before he could really say anything. "Help me!" Someone cried. Yugi and the others rushed to the source and found a kid being strangled-held around the neck by a black-suited man with a piece sticking out. "Let that kid go!" Tristan demanded winding up for a K-O punch and settled for a Judo throw. To everyone's surprise, the man landed on his feet and came back with a flying kick that dropped Tristan. "Tristan!" The others shouted. "Drop him, big hair, or I'll drop you," Joey said. "Joey, don’t! That's one of Pegasus' guards!" Sora shouted. "That's right," the guard revealed. "The name's Kimo. Pegasus pays me to enforce the rules around here." "What do you think you're doing to that little kid?" Yugi asked. "That's none of your business," Kimo said but apparently decided to tell them anyway. “This brat lost all of his Star Chips and now I'm kicking him off the island." "But I didn't lose my Star Chips in a duel, they were stolen from me! My cards too!" The kid protested. "I don't care what lame excuse you have,” the guard said, glaring at the boy, “You need Star Chips to duel and you haven't got any."  “Hang on, what if he’s telling the truth and someone unfairly took his Star Chips and deck? Sora asked, frowning. “You’ll be disqualifying someone who didn’t even lose!” “Not my problem.” Kemo said as he dragged the boy away. “I say we follow him!” Joey said as the others nodded and hurried after the guard. They followed him to what looked like a miniature pier, where a boat was docked. The guard roughly shoved the boy into the boat with the other duelists who had lost all their Star Chips sat, waiting to be taken back to the Main Land. Kemo then tossed the boy his backpack, which he caught before noticing a very scared Weevil, who had been sitting next to him. “There’s no place like home…There’s no place like home…” he said, curled up as he rocked back and forth, still thinking of those monsters from after his duel with Yugi. “Another loser, Kemo?” One of the other guards asked, making Kemo nod and smirk. "Hey!" Yugi called, making the guard turn to see the group running over to them “You lot again?!” Kemo demanded angrily. "What did the guy who stole your Star Chips look like?" Yugi asked the boy. "I didn't see his face because he was really little and wearing a bandanna. He challenged me in a meadow." "He challenged you to a Duel Monsters match?" Sora asked. "Yeah, but the moment I put down my Star Chips and dueling deck, he snatched them up and ran off!" "You shouldn't be sent off the island 'cause your Star Chips and deck had been stolen." Joey said. "A bandanna," Sora muttered. "Not much to go on but..." He put a hand onto the boy’s shoulder. "Don't worry, we'll get your Star Chips back," Sora assured him. "Thank you," the kid said. "But... I don't even know who you are." "Don't worry about it, kid, you have the brilliant mind of Joey Wheeler working for ya'." Joey said, making the others roll their eyes. “This boat leaves in thirty minutes, anyone who doesn’t have a Star Chip by that time is shipped out.” Kemo stated. "So, any ideas on how we should go about this?" Tea asked the boys as they left the dock. "Why don't we ask Sherlock Hopeless over there," Tristan said, pointing his thumb at Joey. "Yeah, why don't ya ask me? I'll figure out how to solve this mystery in no time!" "So, how are you going to find the person who stole the Star Chips?" Tea asked. "Hold on, give me a minute." For a full minute, Joey was deep in thought. The others watched apprehensively. Finally, Joey scratched his head and said, "Beats me." The others face-faulted. "Yugi, you're the smart one, can you figure it out?" Tea asked. "Maybe the thief will return to the scene of the crime," Yugi suggested as they started to look around. "Yeah, right," Joey said. "What are the chances of that happening?" "Ah-ha! I found you at last Yugi!" A little kid leaped out of the bushes. His face was obscured in a purple knit cap and blue bandana. He was wearing a red, orange, and white shirt. "That must be the kid we've been looking for," Sora realized. "I can handle him," Tristan volunteered. "I should hope so, he's half your size," Tea commented. "Just try it, you big dork," the kid said. "Wait a second," Yugi said. "I think I know what this kid wants, he wants to duel me. Is that right?" "You better believe it." The kid said, as Yugi and the kid set up on the dueling field. "Why is Yugi choosing to duel this kid when we can just take these Star Chips away from him?" Joey asked. "You know, sometimes I don't think Yugi knows why he does half the stuff he does," Tristan said in answer to Joey's question. "You think it has something to do with the Millennium Puzzle?" Joey asked. The object in question started to glow as it filled Yugi with its power. "Now, how many Star Chips do you want to wager?" Yugi asked. "To wipe you out, five!" The boy replied carelessly, tossing down the stolen Star Chips. "Five it is, but only because I think I know why you're doing this." Yugi said calmly as he set down all five of his Star Chips. "I don't care what you think, Yugi, I think you're going to lose." The boy stated rather rudely. Yugi stared intensely at his opponent. A small eye appeared in the center of his forehead. "What does Yugi see that we don't?" Tea asked. "It's like he's staring into the other player's soul." "Soul, shmoul, I can see here that the kid's going to get his butt kicked." Joey stated. "He better do it quickly if he's going to get those star chips back to the boat on time." "Don't worry, Tristan, he'll win the star chips and be back to the boat with time to spare," Sora assured him. "I know he will." ‘This is it, Yugi, now you're going to pay for what you did to my big brother!’ The boy thought determinedly, thinking of what happened yesterday. ---------------- Yesterday… "Seto, you gotta leave now if you're going to make the boat to the big tournament at Duelist Kingdom." Mokuba came into his big brother's office where the older boy was shuffling cards like he was trying to figure something out. "I'm not going, Mokuba." "What?" "There's no point." "What do you mean no point?" "Kid, I'm in no position to duel anyone." "What are you talking about? You always said that cards are power and you have all the powerful cards!" "Since I lost my duel with Yugi, I just don't know what I think any more. Everything's different; it feels as if I lost a part of myself that day." "But Seto, you're the best, you're the champ!" "Not since I was defeated by Yugi." Seto took out a card and tossed it to Mokuba. "Here, Mokuba, take it, it was always your favorite. I'll be going away for a while. I don't know how long." "Why? Why are you going away?" For once, Seto had a look that Mokuba had never seen before: fear and confusion. "I don't know who I am any more." "Seto, don't go!" ---------------- ‘You broke up my family, Yugi, and now I'm going to break you up!’ LP: Yugi: 2000/?: 2000 "My first card is the Man-Eating Plant!" The boy said. The only way to describe the monster that the boy had summoned was some kind of mutated Yenus Flytrap covered in thorns with purple ‘lips’ and pink flower buds for ‘hands’ and around the ‘neck’ of its ‘head’, its mouth being full of sharp. Man-Eating Plant Attribute: EARTH Monster Type: Plant Level: 2 ATK/DEF: 800/600 "Now it's my turn," Yugi said. "I'll counter your plant with the Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress #1!" Yugi said as the dragon he had summoned appeared. Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress #1 Attribute: WIND Monster Type: Dragon Level: 4 ATK/DEF: 1400/1200 "Bad choice, Yugi, my Man-Eating Plant will eat your Dragon alive!" ‘No it isn't,’ Sora thought. ‘Winged Dragon is clearly the more powerful of the two monsters, how is this kid able to duel with an opening move like that?’ "So now you're going to pay for what you did, Yugi. Man-Eating Plant, attack!" "Fireball attack!" Yugi shouted as the dragon fired a fireball at the plant, reducing it to nothing. LP: Yugi: 2000/?: 1400 "My plant lost?" "You can't win a Duel with cards that don't rightfully belong to do," Yugi scolded. "How can your heart be in cards belonging to someone else?" "Be quiet! I don't believe in that 'heart of the cards' stuff you keep preaching about. Cards are all about power." "Yes, I sensed a connection to Kaiba," Yugi mumbled, the eye appearing briefly on his forehead again. "You're his brother, you're Mokuba!" The kid reacted in shock and removed his bandana. "How did you know? Oh well, it doesn't matter." "Oh yeah, that's Kaiba's brother, all right," Joey confirmed. "I saw him when Yugi kicked Kaiba's butt!" "That's right, Seto Kaiba is my brother and he's the best Duelist there ever was. But now, thanks to Yugi, he's gone, and now Pegasus is trying to take over Kaiba Corp." "Pegasus wants Kaiba Corp.?" Yugi asked surprised. "I don't know what you did to him when you dueled, Yugi, but ever since that defeat, he hasn't been the same!” Mokuba shouted with tears in his eyes. “He ran away because of you! And without him, Pegasus moved right in. Some Kaiba-Corp. Board Executives invited him to some secret board meeting..." ---------------- The same day as Kaiba's departure… "Now gentlemen, let's see if I understand your proposition. Seto Kaiba has abandoned his corporate station and now you five want to seize control of Kaiba-Corp.," Pegasus said to the six suited figures bathed in darkness. "You then want to merge with my company and you want me to handle any messy details, is that correct?" "Precisely, Mister Pegasus, with our money and your leadership, we'll easily take control of Kaiba-Corp." "Do tell." "For our plan to succeed, Kaiba must be taken out of the picture... permanently." "However, there is a catch: as per the corporate bylaws, only a Kaiba heir can legally take control of Kaiba Corp." "To that end, Pegasus, we recommend you kidnap Kaiba's younger brother, Mokuba. He may control Kaiba-Corp. But we will control him." "Do this for us, and we will lay all of Kaiba-Corp.'s technology at your feet." "Agreed," Pegasus said. "The elder Kaiba will meet with an unfortunate accident and the younger one will be captured." "Excellent, but we have one final condition: the brat who beat Kaiba has tarnished Kaiba-Corp.'s good name. We would like you to restore it." "Well, how fortuitous," Pegasus said, casting his good eye sideways. "Plans for me to duel Yugi are already under way." Mokuba had been listening at the door. He quickly turned and leave but ran straight into Kimo. "You see, gentlemen, this is how officially you can expect me to handle business. Young Kaiba is captured, Yugi will be defeated and Seto Kaiba will bother us no more!" ---------------- "This is your fault! Seto deserted me because of you!" Mokuba shouted as he banged his fists in frustration. "You don't understand. Mokuba, your brother hasn't deserted you, he's searching for himself." Yugi told him, sounding rather calm despite the scene in front of him and what had been shouted at him. "Liar! Tell it to my monster." Mokuba scowled, summoning a new monster, which was a humanoid crocodile with an orange film over its eyes. Krokodilus Attribute: WATER Monster Type: Reptile Level: 4 ATK/DEF: 1100/1200 “Attack!” Mokuba ordered blinded as he monster charged, but once again, Yugi’s monster destroyed it with yet another fireball. LP: Yugi: 2000/Mokuba: 1100 "You know, for a Kaiba, this kid's duels like an amateur," Tristan complained. "Dueling me won't bring your brother back," Yugi argued. "We want to stop Pegasus as much as you do. He has my Grandfather prisoner!" "That's right," Joey confirmed. "Pegasus is the bad guy here, can't ya' see that, ya' twerpy little kid?" "You're wrong. I have to protect my brother's company and Yugi's the one he has to beat in order to gain control of it." "I get it," Tea said. "Mokuba is trying to save his brother's company by defeating Yugi in a duel so Pegasus won't get to face him at all!" "What do you mean?" Tristan asked. "What do you mean what do I mean?" Joey countered. "I wasn't talking to you," Tristan snapped. Joey smiled embarrassingly. "Sorry. What do you mean, Tea?" Tea moaned. "The specifics of the contract that Pegasus made with the Kaiba Corp. guys are that they would only turn over Kaiba-Corp to him if he defeated Yugi in a duel. But if Yugi's defeated beforehand..." Tea explained "Pegasus won't get to face me and control will remain as it is," Yugi finished. "That must be it!" He looked to Mokuba for confirmation but he left the Dueling podium. "If I can't beat you, Yugi," Mokuba said, ascending onto Yugi's platform and grabbing some of his star chips. "I can have you disqualified like I did that other kid." He jumped down and started to run away, but wasn’t quick enough, because Sora grabbed him. “Mokuba, this isn’t helping anyone. I know you just want to help your brother, believe me, I get that; but this isn't the way to do it and you know it.” Sora said. "Sora is right.” Yugi said. “Your brother's just confused. After we dueled, I cleared his mind of evil. I removed from him all the dark influences that clouded his thoughts and actions. Free of that evil influence, Kaiba is struggling. Your brother realized that his way wasn't the right way and he's searching his heart for answers. And you know that in your heart, what you're doing isn't the right way either." When Mokuba looked at Yugi, Yugi didn't see the hostile brother trying to get him disqualified. Yugi saw a scared little boy, searching for the right way. "But what can I do?" Mokuba asked. "You can start by trusting in us and together, we'll stop Pegasus. I promise you, we can only bring Pegasus down if we stick together. We'll help you protect your brother, Mokuba, but you have to help us, okay? You have to go back and return those cards and star chips to the kid you stole them from." "You're right, Yugi, we'll stop Pegasus together." Mokuba smiled with a little nod. “We have to hurry though, there’s only a few more minutes before the boat leaves.” Tea said, tapping her wristwatch. “Right,” Sora said, letting go of Mokuba, “Let’s go.” Everyone nodded, running for the docks. ---------------- Meanwhile, in an isolated house on a cliff, sitting in a chair was Seto Kaiba, very deep in thought. ‘It's no use,’ Seto Kaiba thought. ‘I've gone over it a dozen times in my mind and I just can't seem to figure it out. How is it a kid who came out of nowhere able to beat a champion like me? I've run computer simulations, probability scenarios, and quantum analysis of our duel, but I still don't have the answer. I've been clearly dominating the match. My Blue-Eyes White Dragon ripped through his forces. I was on the verge of winning! But Yugi wouldn't give up. Against all odds, he had absolute faith in his Grandfather's deck. And somehow, he was able to draw the one card to ensure his victor. Exodia, he played Exodia. Ever since the game's creation, nobody had been able to summon Exodia. Even those who had all five pieces in their deck weren't able to play them all before the duel was done. And yet, this kid was. I always thought Duel Monsters was all about sheer power, but Yugi believes that the cards have a heart. It sounds crazy, but could Yugi be right? Is there really a heart of the cards that can affect the outcome of a duel?’ Kaiba finished the plate-size disk with five slots. ‘The only way I'll know for sure is to face Yugi again, and these new portable holo generators will enable me to challenge him no matter where I find him. If I can just get to…’ Kaiba planning was interrupted by a sharp knock on the door. "Seto Kaiba! We know you're in there, open the door right now or we'll blow it open!" Kaiba was able to place the portable holo generators into his brief case before the two guards burst through the door and aimed guns at him. "Let's go, Kaiba." "Mister Pegasus would like to have a few words with you." "I bet he would," Kaiba mumbled, standing up with the chair between him and them. "But it'll take more than you two goons to get me." "This can go easy or we can just shoot and forget about the questions." "You'll never take me alive!" Kaiba said and kicked the chair into them. One of the guns went off but the bullet bounced off of Kaiba's metal briefcase. He grabbed his briefcase and dove through the window. By the time the guards were able to get to the window, all they could see was the cliff the house stood upon. "He jumped," one goon said. "Nobody could survive a fall like that. Looks like Kaiba did our dirty work for us. That only leaves us one more thing." The guard picked up the top card in Kaiba's deck. "Mister Pegasus was very clear; he wanted the deck with the deadly Blue-Eyes White Dragon..." ---------------- Back on the island, the group, plus Mokuba, were running as quick as they could to get to the docks as Tea panted, “We’re almost there!” When they did get there, they gasped to see the boat was already out to sea. “The boat’s already gone!” Mokuba said in shock. “And there’s the jerk who shipped them out!” Joey said, pointing at Kemo, who had turned to see them and smirked as they ran up to him. “Well, look who’s back,” Kemo commented, “You’re late.” “What gives?!” Sora shouted. “It hasn’t been half an hour yet!” “Too bad, Pegasus sets the schedule here.” Kemo shrugged carelessly. “But you have to call the boat back,” Mokuba said as he showed Kemo the Star Chips, “I need to return that kid’s Star Chips!” Kimo just smirked and slapped Mokuba’s hand, making everyone gasp as the chips went flying into the water. "Hey, some of those Star Chips were Yugi's!" Joey exclaimed in anger. Kimo just smirked. "You should really keep an eye on your valuables, especially Star Chips." "But we had a deal!" Sora protested. "Rules are rules. And by the way, there's nothing in the rulebook about investigating missing Star Chips. And speaking of rules..." Kimo gripped Mokuba around his neck. "This young man is a guest of Mister Maximillion Pegasus and he's been invited to a special dinner at the castle in his honor. Ain't that right, Mokuba?" “Yugi, Sora, help me!” Mokuba whimpered "Wait," Yugi called. He showed the three remaining Star Chips on his glove. "I still have three Star Chips remaining. I challenge you to a duel and if I win, Mokuba comes with us." "I don't know why you want to risk your star chips on this punk, but if you want to lose your last remaining Star Chips, then meet me back by Field 146 in four hours." ---------------- Four hours later, the gang met Kimo at Field 146. "Yugi, help!" Mokuba called. He was still being held roughly by Kimo. "Put him down now!" Yugi commanded. "I'll consider it if you win the Duel." "Oh, I'll beat you all right." "I never said I would duel you. Your opponent's right up there.” He said as he pointed to a person standing on the red side of the field. "He's an old friend who's been dying to meet you. He met with an unfortunate accident earlier, but he's come back just to duel you." Yugi and the others gasped. It was Kaiba, just as he was when Yugi last dueled him, right down to the school uniform. "Kaiba!" "Yes, Yugi," Kaiba said in a sinister voice. "It's me, Kaiba, and this time, you don't stand a ghost of a chance." Kingdom Hearts: Heart of the Cards - CH9

Chapter 9: Duel With a Ghoul Within the small clearing, standing before the arena, everyone continued to stare up at the tall brunette standing on the red platform in undisguised shock and confusion. Yet, it was only Yugi, Joey, Tea and Tristan that had a sense of dread in their chests from the implications of Kemo's prior words. "There is...no way...that thing is Kaiba," Joey said in disbelief before glaring at Kemo, "It just can't be!" Tea whimpered a little at the utterly dead look in the so-called Kaiba's eyes, "But it looks...so much like him..." "That's because he is Kaiba," Kemo stated matter of factly, before adding callously, "Two witnesses saw him fall to his death just moments earlier." Everyone gasped in shock. "Liar!" Mokuba yelled in denial, hitting Kemo with his fists, but it was in vain as the man didn't ease his grip in the slightest and just kept smirking, "Take back what you said!" "Get used to it," Kimo said. "All that's left of Kaiba is your memories... plus one really cranky ghost just looking for revenge."  “That's not Kaiba!" Yugi threw in. "It can't be! That guy's nothing but a fake! A trick by Pegasus! Don't worry, Mokuba, I'll win your freedom!" —------------- Speaking of Pegasus, the eccentric millionaire was watching this conflict on his view screen. He laughed, "This is extremely entertaining! I just love reality TV." "Who is Yugi dueling?" Croquet asked. "It's Kaiba, or what's left of him. The poor boy had shown so much promise." "But how... he... it's... how did you do that?" Croquet stuttered. "I really can't take all the credit; I had help... from Yugi." Pegasus said, making Croquet's head spin. "And now, to return the favor, I'm going to teach him a lesson about the true power of the Millennium Items!" —------------- "Yugi," Kaiba spoke. "You look like you've seen a ghost." "That's enough!" "I am no longer of this world, and it's all because of you." Yugi was rapidly losing his patience. "I could've had it all. But when you beat me, you took away more than just the match; you took away my life and destroyed my soul." "I've heard enough, it's time to start the duel!" "This time, you won't beat my cards." "You may look like Kaiba, but there's no way you can imitate his deck!" "You mean my deck." Yugi growled. "Beat him, Yugi!" Mokuba cheered. "He's nothing but a fake." "Yeah, that doesn't even look like Kaiba!" "That's right," Tea threw in, then amended, "Wait, if it's not a ghost, and it's not Kaiba, then...?" ‘Yugi!’ “Kaiba thought, penetrating Yugi's mind. ‘I know you can sense my thoughts and I know you can see the truth. I am Kaiba, but this time you're dueling someone who has nothing to lose!’ "Kimo, once I beat Yugi, Pegasus can have Kaiba Corporation. All I want is revenge. Three stars say I win." "Fine, that means when the duel's done, I'll have six!" "Kick his butt Yugi!" Joey told him. LP: Yugi: 2000/“Kaiba”: 2000 "I guess I'll go first," 'Kaiba' said as he drew before playing a card, "And I'll play Hitotsu-Me Giant." Yugi, Tea, Joey and Mokuba gasped as a humanoid creature that could only be described as a muscular cyclops with green skin wearing a blackish-blue loincloth appeared on the tall brunette's field. Hitotsu-Me Giant Attribute: EARTH Monster Type: Beast-Warrior Level: 4 ATK/DEF: 1200/1000 "Is something wrong, Yugi? It's your turn to move." ‘The Hitotsu-me Giant is how Kaiba started our last duel.’ "There's a card just like that in my brother's deck!" Mokuba said. "Hey, just 'cause it's the same card doesn't mean it's the same deck!" Joey argued. ‘He's trying to confuse me by making the same move that Kaiba did. But it'll have the same result!’ "I'll start off with this card! Go, Dark Magician!" He then summoned his own, more familiar monster, "I'll destroy your monster with the Dark Magician!" A gold light lit the square and with a dramatic flip-mid air, the purple-clad spellcaster appeared on the field staff at the ready. Dark Magician Attribute: DARK Monster Type: Spellcaster Level: 7 ATK/DEF: 2500/2100 "Dark Magic Attack!" With a twirl of his staff and a large ball of black magic, the Dark Magician blew the opposing monster to smithereens, eliciting cheers from his friends. "So much for your Giant!" LP: Yugi: 2000/“Kaiba”: 700 Kaiba didn't seem worried by it. "You're as strong as ever, Yugi," he laughed. "What's with that Carbon-Copy Kaiba?" Joey asked. "He's laughing like he doesn't even care!" "It's funny how things have come full circle, Yugi. What are you thinking in that feeble brain of yours? I bet I know, you've come to the conclusion that no matter what, there's no way you can win. And you'd be right. Even a simpleton like you now knows that I must be Seto Kaiba. And once you accept that fact, you might as well accept defeat!" "I don't care who you are," Yugi returned. "You're going to lose to me just the same." "But Yugi, you barely beat me the last time we dueled, and this time your big advantage is gone." "What do you mean?" "Exodia, your Exodia cards got ruined." The ghoul said, making Yugi gasp. "You could only beat me with Exodia in your deck and without it, you can only lose." ‘Hey wait a minute,’ Sora thought. ‘How would Kaiba know that Yugi nearly lost Exodia? It happened after their first duel and on the boat out of the eye reach of any of Pegasus' spies. Kaiba wasn't there, so who told him?’ —------------- (Play Yu-Gi-Oh! I’m Back) Meanwhile, back in Japan at a rather large house, two of Pegasus' goons stood guard at the iron gates as the real Seto Kaiba hid behind a nearby tree. Disappeared Out of here It was time to pay my dues Never guessed That you'd be dressed In my clothes and in my shoes He smirked, remembering how he had grabbed a ledge near the midway of the cliff when he had jumped, keeping him well hidden from the thugs. You couldn't wait to move right in If I were you I'd be concerned Ain't no way you're gonna win Betcha didn't count on my return Kaiba snuck around a corner of the wall and climbed over into the gardens, he spotted a chain in the long grass and pulled it, lifting open a secret entrance into an underground bunker of sorts. Thought you were so tough You had it all under control Now enough is enough Gonna take back what you stole He walked down the steps into a small library, only to walk up to the bookcase and pull a book, causing the shelf to slide to the side, revealing a hi-tech, hidden door. He leaned forward towards a circular device, allowing a light to scan his eye before it allowed him inside where a rather large computer with three screens were built into the wall before one desk and chair. Give it up, 'cause now I'm back (End Yu-Gi-Oh I’m Back) He sat down and powered up the computer and put a headset on as the computer spoke in a female voice, "Running identity verification protocol, please state your name." "Seto Kaiba," Kaiba recited. "And here I thought I seen it all," the computer said as the boot up screen came on. "But having to break into your own house?" "It's too long a story for right now." Kaiba answered. "'Too long a story'? Well maybe I'm not in a talkative mood myself," the computer said in a snooty voice. "I'd find that hard to believe." "Such a smart boy, while you were out gallivanting, a hostile takeover of Kaiba Corporation has begun." "I know." "At the same time, Maxamillian Pegasus kicked off his Duel Monsters Championship at Duelist Kingdom." Images of both person and place appeared on the front screen followed by a new picture: Yugi Moto. "If Yugi Moto can be defeated by Pegasus or a competitor representing him, then the new Kaiba Corporation board has promised him complete control of the company!" "He won't win," assured Kaiba. "His deck has Exodia." Kaiba shivered. Even now, seeing Exodia destroy all three of his Blue-Eyes White Dragons chilled him to the bone. "Well, I hate to break it to ya, but shortly after he defeated you, Yugi nearly lost Exodia, the cards were safely recovered by some rookie named Sora, but they're ruined and unplayable," The computer informed him. "No way!" Kaiba said surprised. "It's true. A third-party scan of Yugi Moto's deck revealed that Exodia is not included among the cards." Kaiba lowered his head. "When it rains, it pours. Pegasus knows all about the corporate bylaws that require a living Kaiba heir to make any change of control legal. Mokuba's his prisoner and with you out of the way, it seems like Pegasus will exert all kinds of pressure to make your brother do what he wants, one way or another. So now you know. What are we going to do?" "They'll keep my brother safe at least until the takeover is complete so I got to make sure that Pegasus doesn't defeat Yugi in a duel, no matter what.” Kaiba said worried for his brother, but kept his focus on his current task. “I'm not going to give up Kaiba Corporation without a real fight! It's take over time... by me! We're going to hack right into Pegasus' computer mainframe. Next stop... the Duelist Kingdom!" —------------- Yugi was rapidly becoming upset at Kaiba's verbal attack. "Are you here to play head games or Duel Monsters? It's time for your move." Kaiba laughed evilly. "And it's gonna blow your mind." He took a card from his hand. "This next card will blow you away, Yugi, it's a blast from the past, with the emphasis on blast!" He then turned the card in his hand so Yugi could see the picture, making the tri-haired teen gasp in shock at the familiar white dragon. Playing the card, the ghoul announced, "I call forth the Blue-Eyes White Dragon!" The other teens, the younger Kaiba and the sole hybrid all gasped in shock as the dragon appeared with an almighty, earth-shaking roar. It had the sleekest, shiniest scales they had ever seen, being an ivory white in color, it had a pair of matching, bat-like wings and a long armor-plated tail, its claws having three digits and were small, like a T-Rex, while its legs were large to match the rest of its body. Its neck was also plated and its head was smooth with fin-like flaps on the back of its lower jaw and its eyes were the clearest shade of blue. Blue-Eyes White Dragon Attribute: LIGHT Monster Type: Dragon Level: 8 ATK/DEF: 3000/2500 "Only one deck's got that," Joey said. "That means... what they say is true," Mokuba realized. "My brother really is dead!" "Looks like the advantage is mine," Kaiba pointed out. ‘So this really IS Kaiba's deck,’ Yugi thought. ‘There's no other explanation. But does that mean that Kaiba is…’ "Don't worry, Yugi, my feelings weren't hurt when you called me a liar. Now admit you were wrong!" The ghoul said, making Yugi scowled. "Not having a body really isn't so bad; you wouldn't believe what I save in food bills alone. But I still get to enjoy the finer things in life, like revenge! And I'm going to savor its sweet taste for a very long time." "Shut up!" Mokuba cried. "Please, someone make him go away!" Joey, Tristan, and Tea could only watch in horror. "Almost breaks my heart... if I had one." “Kaiba said. Sora gasped, before thinking, ‘Could this imposter be…?’ —------------- Back with the real Kaiba and his computer, they had successfully hacked into the Duelist Kingdom systems. "I expected there to be more security, looks like when it comes to computer duels Pegasus doesn't stand a chance," Kaiba remarked, "Now let's search for Yugi, he's sure to be dueling by now." "You got it," The computer answered and began to access information about Yugi, only for the screens to flash red with a stop sign, "Access denied!” Kaiba shot up, "What did you do wrong?" “Don’t blame me, I found all the security alright, and it's all around Yugi's data, and data about some Sora and something called a ‘Keyblade’." Kaiba arched a brow at the second name and dumb sounding weapon, but didn't focus on it. "I should've known. Fine by me; all right, Pegasus, go ahead and give it your best shot. There isn't a computer system in the world that I can't break into. Here's the thing, every computer has a back door if you know where to look. And guess where we're going to look." "Search me." "It'll be quicker if I take over on manual for a while," Kaiba said as he began programming codes. "Data from all the duels is being beamed from the island and to an orbiting Industrial Illusions satellite and back down to their main frame. These transmissions are obviously highly encrypted. If we can somehow force the Industrial Illusions computer offline, I'm sure their back up systems won't have as much security." "Are you saying we can make their computer crash from here? But how?" "A computer crash is exactly what I had in mind. The biggest computer crash ever, and I'm going to use Pegasus's own satellite to do it." "But I've already tried to hack into their systems!" "My idea's different. Once the security's down, we should be able to freely access the data. Be ready with a search for the Dark Magician. If Yugi's dueling, he's likely to use that card." "Gotcha, Dark Magician inquiry standing by." The computer replied as a small image of the Dark Magician appeared on one of the screens. "Excellent." "So spill it already, how are we going to use Industrial Illusion's own satellite to bring down their computer?" "By bringing down the satellite itself, down all the way!" The computer began loading the satellite schematics. "M-class pregnant series. Booster rocket controls online. Searching for orbital coordinates." The screen showed graphic details of what was happening. "Breaching on board computer security. You are now the proud owner of an Industrial Illusions satellite." "Great! Now plot a crash course for the computer mainframe." "Uploading new coordinates now." —------------- In space, the satellite's boosters fired and the satellite started to descend to Earth. Its target was the computer mainframe on top of the Industrial Illusions' headquarters. —------------- Kaiba watched this with a smirk that just screamed 'I'm right!' "Virus software won't stop this. Pegasus, you're on notice that Kaiba Corporation's still mine." "Satellite impact in ten seconds!" —------------- The satellite struck its target dead, causing an intense shockwave and tremor. —------------- Back with Yugi and the duel with the ghoul, said ghoul smirked viciously as the Blue Eyes hissed at the Dark Magician, who stared at it down fearlessly, "I won't attack just yet, why rush to revenge when I can savor it?" He then placed a card face down. 'He wants me to fall for his face-down card, it must be a magic card,' Yugi thought before changing his magician's card's position, "Dark Magician to defense mode," Dark Magician obediently dropped to one knee, bringing his staff up across his chest, "And I summon Curse of Dragon on the defense as well." His own yellow dragon appeared with its wings curled around itself in a protective position. Curse of Dragon Attribute: DARK Monster Type: Dragon Level: 5 ATK/DEF: 2000/1500 "Smart playing, Yugi, unfortunately it wasn't smart enough. You played right into my hand: Defense Paralysis!" The ghoul said turning his face-down over and both of Yugi's monsters were forced into attack position. "A trap!" Yugi exclaimed. "Now Blue Eyes use your White Lightning and destroy Yugi's Curse of Dragon!" His dragon charged a bright light within its mouth before releasing a steady blast of white electricity, which made Itzel and Akira freeze up with terror as it flew across the field and destroyed the smaller, yellow dragon, cutting Yugi's life points in half as they dropped. LP: Yugi: 1000/“Kaiba”: 700 "Yugi!" His friends and Mokuba called out in concern. —------------- Meanwhile, Kaiba and his computer were searching through all the active duel arenas for Yugi. "Still no Dark Magician," Kaiba said. He was beginning to wonder if Yugi was even playing it. "We've exhausted almost every possibility of locating Yugi Moto. Field 146 is the final active duel." "Then, search Field 146." The screen showed a hallway leading to a large metallic-like door with the number on it. The "camera" zoomed in but suddenly froze up. "What's that?" "Looks like I crashed." "Reboot," Kaiba ordered. The screen unfroze. "Enter Field 146!" His computer did so and tried to enter the field again, only to crash once more. "I'm frozen again! It's worse this time," the computer said. "Hold on," Kaiba said as he ran an analysis. "I see, it's a virus, and a good one at that. That can mean only one thing: searching for Yugi's cards activates the virus. Yugi's inside! Get ready to go in!” "But the security door!" "I've come this far already and I'm not about to blow it. Actually... yes I am." Kaiba answered as a stick of dynamite appeared on the screen and it blew the virtual door to pieces. Once the virtual smoke cleared, Kaiba saw a large fortress in the middle of the ocean. Strangely though, it was built with two different martial; one half was normal bricks, looking as it were carved from stone, its tower having blue tiles for the roof, the other half was made of well-polished, white stone like a castle out of a fantasy-world, complete with pink tiles for the tower roof, it even had a little balcony at the top, as if it were a princess tower. "Huh, what's that?" “All of the data for Yugi and this Sora boy are inside that fortress, my sensors never lie," His computer told him, "Nothing will break through this door except the password." Kaiba smirked. "A password. Knowing Pegasus, that ego maniac wouldn't think that anyone would outsmart him and get this far. We're going in!" "The password?" "Pegasus." —------------- ‘How can I defeat his Blue-Eyes White Dragon?’ Yugi thought as he drew a new card. "Hey Yugi," Kemo commented with a ruthless grin and callous laugh, "You got to admit for a stiff, this Kaiba sure got game." "THAT IS NOT MY BROTHER! THERE'S JUST NO WAY!" Mokuba broke down tears streaming down his face with slightly broken eyes and all but screamed as he once again tried to hit Kemo, but again it did no good, Yugi stared down at Mokuba with wide eyes, "Yugi, you know that isn't him! Everyone thinks he's a bad guy, but he's not! I know my brother and he's not mean like this! He's my bestest friend in the whole world; that thing's not him! You just have to believe me!" 'I wish I could be as sure as you are Mokuba,' Yugi thought warily as he looked at the smirking ghoul, 'But right now, I don't know what to think...' Seeing he wasn't convinced, Mokuba turned his pleading eyes to Sora as he pleaded, "Sora, please...believe me!" Sora looked at the ghoul again and again, saw a strange aura, he looked back at Mokuba, who looked ready to break down and cry and he smiled reassuringly, "I do, Mokuba." Everyone looked at him in shock. "Guess I'll have to knock some sense into you first when this is all over," The ghoul commented unabashedly at him, earning a hard glare from both Sora and Yugi. "This duel isn't over yet!" Yugi exclaimed, recapturing the ghoul's attention as he played a magic card, "Magical Hats, conceal the Dark Magician!" Four large black, old-fashioned top hats with white and red checkered bands with big, bold yellow question marks appeared on the field, hiding the Dark Magician from view. The ghoul gasped in surprise. But that surprise turned into amusement, "Are you so desperate that you're having your Dark Magician perform simple hat tricks?" But Yugi didn't raise to the bait, "It's not a trick and it's not so simple," The ghoul arched a brow, but Yugi just shrugged, "Do the math; four hats, one shot, only a twenty-five percent chance you'll find the Dark Magician," Yugi had commented this with a smirk that made the ghoul growl in frustration, "But the real question is; else is lurking beneath these hats." Stephanie smiled as the ghoul's eyes widened at the suggestion, finding the trick amusing. "Yeah!" Joey cheered, "Now that's what I call pullin' one outta yer hat!" —------------- "You were right about the password, the fortress is unlocked," Kaiba’s computer told him, "Yugi's data, as well as this Sora, is accessible to us and it's his turn." "Pegasus thinks he can make up all the rules in this game, but he could've never thought of this brand new twist: I'm back!" —------------- At the dueling field, Kaiba's shock was replaced by cockiness. "So predictable, Yugi. I know where your Dark Magician hides." "If you're so sure, then move." "It's a shame this duel's going to end so soon. White Lightning!" The dragon launched an attack towards one of the hats. ‘If he picks the right hat, I'll lose more than just this duel, much more!’ To Be Continued… —------------- Author’s Note: Crossover Vote: https://www.streem.tech/poll/770 https://www.streem.tech/poll/783 To vote, click or enter the links above.

It had been a long, dreadful night for Ryder and his friends fighting the forces of darkness. To suggest these heroes were completely exhausted was an understatement. True, they’ve faced many tough opponents throughout their journey. But none of them set the bar higher than Chernabog himself… All they could imagine now was how tough any other villains would be the further they travelled into the book itself. The battle took so much energy that the remainder of this evening was deathly still. To prevent further exhaustion, Ryder’s teleportation spell took them halfway down the mountain. Fortunately, Mickey still had the Sorcerer’s hat and, with its power, was able to float everybody down the remainder of the mountain. They had since traversed far from the town and reached a grassy hill with trees, a peaceful place to land. Upon landing

Chapter 15: A Night on Bald Mountain, Part 2 Ryder slowly opened his eyes, grunting as he clutched his head. He rose back up, taking a good look around. The area itself was surrounded by large, sharp rocks, with tiny platforms to stand on. The air was greatly filled with a cloud of smoke. As he looked around, Ryder almost slipped off the edge from the surface which he stood. With a yell and a quick reaction, he took a few steps backward. He then took one step forward, cautiously looking down toward the huge deep chasm riddled with fire. Beads of sweat poured from the little boy’s brow, he swallowed a lump down his throat, and he was lucky not to have fallen in. Suddenly, cries and moans of pain drew her attention. He looked behind him discovering his friends surrounding something familiarly grey. “Rocky!” Ryder gasped in shock. He raced toward them, none of them knowing something crawled behind the rocks above them. Whatever it was, it stalked the group. Meanwhile, Rocky laid
