China Cuts Jesus Again! -- The Communist Ben Hur

I am so pissed. Excuse my French. My wife and I went to the cinema today to watch the new version of Ben-Hur with Morgan Freeman. I was so excited. I had already watched one of those lousy copies that you get of the movies recorded by some cam operator on torrent, so I knew what to expect, but I was looking forward to the 3D “good copy” version. At the end of the movie, my wife said, “Bull sh**!” She is from China and grew up in the 80’s and 90’s here watching China climb out of poverty, but she has seen the old 1959 Charlton Heston version more than once and it’s a favorite of hers. She had been waiting for this to come to our city.

Boy, did they cut every single reference to Jesus or Christianity out of the movie. It was like a doctor with a scalpel operating on a cancer patient. I only caught one fraction of a second scene flashing through Ben Hur’s mind where Jesus gives him a drink of water as he’s being hauled off to the galleys. Something they missed, I guess. Well, Jesus is not the cancer; He’s the cure and China would be as rich and strong as Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan if they could learn that Christianity, even in it’s apostate form creates good people. They also didn’t hang a poster of the movie in their cinema. That’s unusual.

Did I mention that I’m angry? I’ve been in China since ’98, teaching and passing out tracts occasionally. I guess I’ve become too comfortable and naïve to think that they were changing. But don’t blame Chinese, they’re outstretched with open arms. Blame the capital of modern Rome, Beijing, like in the movie oppressing the Jews. The theater had a good turn out, but how can you even get the story? In this communist version, Ben-Hur has an instant change of heart from vengeance on Messala because of what? The brotherhood of man? I mean, how can you explain a supernatural change of direction like that. One minute he’s trying to kill him in the arena and the next he’s forgiving him.

And what were the producers thinking? Let me guess, maybe lots of the money in the movie market in the mainland. I wonder if they cut the Hong Kong version of the movie too. I doubt it. Only in the mainland do they censor like this. Maybe? Well, censorship like this is coming to us all. And do they censor the Roman praying to his pagan gods? No. Do they censor his comments on how “he has different gods” than the Jews who took him in as an orphan? No. That’s well established in the story line. This is the theme of the movie, the gods are clay and do nothing.

I wonder what Lew Wallace, the author of Ben-Hur, would say? His 1880 novel was called Ben-Hur, A Tale of the Christ. We could call this one Ben-Hur, A Tale of [censored]. Lew Wallace was a lawyer, the youngest Major General in the U.S. Army during the Civil War, a Republican and Governor of New Mexico Territory. He played a big part in the Union victory at Shiloh although there is a large controversy about his actions. His novel was the best selling novel of the 19th century.

This 2016 version was already almost completely devoid of any reverence to Jesus as the Son of God. I noticed some critics even called it “the atheist version”. The healing of the mom and the crucifixion are like an old VCR on fast-forward. I guess we’ve become satisfied with just little scraps that the editors and directors leaven in when it comes to faith and belief in Jesus. Oh well, it’s good if only as a wake up call to not fall for this devolution of the mind and heart of man. Don’t you get flushed down the toilet with the rest of the fallen and those “falling away” in the Endtime. II Thessalonians 2:1-3

I mean why did they even show the movie here? Do they want to boast that they show Christian movies? That they’re open? Well, they sure are not. They are just as bigoted and antichrist as ever. Shame!

They said it was not a remake of the Heston version, and said that they were going back to the novel instead.  Well, true to their real agenda, they certainly cut the spirit of novel in half, as if the second half of the title didn't even exist.

It was as if Marcion had directed it.  Marcion was the one who decided to delete all the books of the Bible except for the eleven that fit his pre-conceived doctrines.  Even so, the eleven contained huge alterations.

It would be one of the shortest remakes ever made.

i'm not sure what you mean. my groups?
as far as the movie goes, i don't think it's that bad in it's full version. too much of the destruction porn, bad acting, lacking a personal touch that the first one does. it's more like a made for television movie. B movie at best. i wonder if the original was even done in English?

No, the comment is to MikesMom, who has a number of religious groups here on DA. She might be interested in having the article in her groups.

From much of what I've read, they've butchered the story very badly by leaving out most everything to do with Jesus, or by outright making Jesus out to be something He was not. Some say the movie is as bad as what they did with Noah.

While some Christians in the US said it was a good movie (I have no clue why), most have dismissed it as garbage. The 1959 version is Superior.

I agree. The remakes stink compared to the classics.
