Description

In Sept 2017 I quit my office job and started working as a full time freelancer.  What I intended on being a liberating move, became a "gig economy" grind.
By February of 2018 I had developed Overuse Tendinitis in my Drawing Hand/Arm.  It was a full frontal crisis.

I couldn't physically do the work that I was used to doing.
Was GOOD at doing.  The work that payed my rent!

A foggy remnant of a memory chimed in the back of my mind.
Something about one cartoonist's advice to another.
The gist being—simplify—a simplified art style is best for long term projects.
If you have hyper detailed characters, you'll burn out.

I was in a lot of pain when I drew this, Feb 21st 2018.
(I was high on pain medication too!)

And it remains one of my favorite images.
I just think it's perfect.  And I almost never use that word.

I still want to go back and explore this abstract style, but what happened was it evolved into the aesthetic I still employ.
I can be hyper detailed when I want to, and draw a character that can be rendered very easily.

And BTW
It wasn't Physical Therapy that healed me.
It was "Yoga with Joelle" on Youtube.
