Spider Mullarney by JeyBarnes Spider Mullarney by JeyBarnes
This be my contribution to *ladydragona's call for pirates!

Here follows the tale of marooned Mullarney and how he wound up casting his lot with Captain Sam and crew.

Mullarney was discovered to be the sole human inhabitant of a medium-sized tropical island far from any civilized shore. He didn't speak a word of English or, so far as Sam's crew could tell, any other language, but he did grunt, mumble and bark an awful lot. After some delicate attempts at communication, Sam persuaded the then-nameless castaway to show him and the crew around the island, pointing out sources of food and teaching the pirates how best to catch and eat iguana, etc. The odd stranger seemed eager enough to help and it was thanks to him that the Anarchist's Revolution was able to restock and recuperate after a particularly costly run-in with a rival ship.

In a show of either pity or gratitude, Cap'n Sam gave the castaway leave to join his crew. Within a few weeks at sea among his fellow human beings, the stranger began to recall rudimentary English and was eventually able to communicate that his name (or one of them) was Mullarney. This was soon supplemented with the substitute first name "Spider" by the crew, for Mullarney's bony limbs and island-honed ability to scale the rigging in record time.

As much of a boon as Spider is when it comes to cooking shoe leather just right and concocting anti-sunburn paste out of chalk and underarm sweat, he's really kind of a pain. Any traces of human culture that might have been there to begin with have long been washed out by the incessant sound of the tide or burned to cinders by the tropical sun. His grasp of etiquette is lacking even among filthy pirates, which should tell you something.
He's also incredibly lazy when he wants to be, which is often.

Spider seems to've developed something like his own culture during the time that he was marooned. He spikes his hair using an unpleasant mixture of grease and ash and habitually paints his body when he can get the supplies for it (you don't want to know what they are). Speculation is that this practice was developed for a combination of keeping mozzies off, inhibiting sunburn, and because he had an awful lot of time on his hands. The shackles and chain are perhaps the best clue as to how Mullarney wound up on the island, but so far as the crew can tell the circumstances have been fried out of his memory.

He moves and behaves almost exactly like a monkey.

Oh, and the things stuck in his hair are the little twigs from the crown of a palm tree.

IN CONCLUSION, Spidey already needs a major overhaul and this was the quickest, most bare-concept drawing ever. But you get the idear.

wow that paint on him and the stuff he used to spike his hair reminds me of my dad's legend in the army that he made some of the army face paint stuff out of ash and gasoline, the stuff worked great but it wouldn't come off. the way to get it off was with gasoline.

He then got his nickname in the army the Tar man, this is no joke, he marks all his army gear TAR.

That design is made of coolness. Seriously. All of the details are so fun and clever, and it just works really well. Too fun.

I'm coming back to look at this since you commented so nicely on Rotguts and I discover that I've not yet commented on it. WHAT IS THIS.

The wide, staring eyes and lopsided grin are priceless and add to his character. I love the dead seagull and the gourd with the jack-o-lantern face, they're like the basic survival needs of food and water (if the gourd is hollow) that he carries with him just in case he gets stuck on another island. (Not that he'd carry the dead seagull around, I'm assuming it'd get eaten very quickly.)

I love his grungy, the-dirt-and-paint-has-been-ground-into-my-skin -and-I-just-add-more-layers-when-it-fades-instead-of-bothering-to-bathe look. I also dig the little bandages on his fingers, almost like he was nibbling on himself and someone else had the sense to clean up the wound and stop him from doing it again.

I LOVE YOU CRUMPETYKINS. Honestly, as I was developing this guy all I could think about is how much he reminds me (in certain ways) of Krakken and Hamilton Bak. Oh, if they had tea together. MAYHEM. :toast:

OMEGOSH, Hamilton would probably slide under the table from mortification, or from an epileptic seizure brought on by the combined force of Spider and Krakken insanity. IT WOULD BE GLORIOUS.

My only wonder is: after being stranded on a tropical island, how is he so pale? I could go out in the sun with solar reflectors and still not avoid a burn that well.

If you're talking about the paper-whiteness covering most of him, that's paint; as far as the actual skin that's showing, I was just too lazy to make sure it was appropriately dark--but I hear ya. I'm actually chompin' at the bit to do a Spider-un-painted picture to show that he is in fact quite tan.

I NEVER DO NOT LOVE YOUR CHARACTERS, JENNY. MAN.

Oh man, Spider, how cool are you. I love the idea of the Revolution picking him up on an island. IN FACT, WE WERE THINKING THAT COULD BE AN ADVENTURE IN THE POTENTIAL RP. I need to clear that with you BUT MAN IT'D BE A GREAT STORY.

I love his personality and his quill-hair and goggles and awesome body paint. I dig that his priceless use in all survival/island situations balances his annoyance and quirks on the ship and in crew context.

YOU LEND SUCH DEPTH TO THESE PROJECTS. Man, I love that everything thus far is totally awesome. BEST PIRATE SHIP EVER.

I ALSO HAD THIS OTHER IDEA where he sort of manages to earn his keep by indirectly boosting morale whenever things get boring at sea. He does this by being the star of the WHAT WILL SPIDER EAT? game invented by the crew.
Spider will eat almost ANYTHING.

If you want to do the Sam-and-co.-find-Spider-on-the-island thing as an RP, then I am cool with that. I'm tickled that you like him! HOORAY FOR ME.

The find-him-on-an-island bit hinges ENTIRELY upon your willingness to actually join the RP. THERE IS NO PRESSURE, SERIOUSLY.

... But we're at goodshiprev @ livejournal.

I'm Captain Sam. Y'KNOW. JUST SAYING.

I WILL JOIN. But only on the condition that you promise to BOTHER ME INCESSANTLY if I show signs of crapping out. It's all that'll keep me alive, I swear.

Right now I need to sleep but I'm gonna be ALL OVER THIS in the morning. Eeeeeee!
