Are Horror Films Art?

The horror film is an important artistic movement involving the film medium. "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is a prime example of the social commentary able to be made using an extreme form of entertainment. Films like "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" use extreme violence, and in the case of "Visitor Q", sexuality, to bring attention to issues the filmmakers consider important. The graphic gore present in horror films is a tool, and should be judged as an effective means of accenting ideas with powerful images, just as the lighting of a scene, or a particular camera effect, can be used in the same way. To dismiss such a complex form of social commentary as nothing more than mindless entertainment is to fail in recognizing the qualities that truly define art.
