Odette by JessicaMDouglas Odette by JessicaMDouglas
Concept
I wanted to do a series of portraits of the more tragic stories in fairy tales... only to get completely distracted by an idea for a portrait of Odette. I went for more of a swanlike appearance for her, with the long throat and the pale skin.

Materials
Cut paper, real crystals, bits of silver chain, silk tissue, and broken pieces from an old necklace. Watercolors and colored pencils as well. What's not shown in this is a hand sculpted frame to go with it, along with a few additions to make the piece more balanced on the bottom right area.

Awards
N/a

Prints
Unfortunately the piece relies heavily on the frame to keep it balanced, so I never did make prints of it.

Original
Seems to have gone missing.

Side note
It's heavy. Beyond heavy.

umm I have the frame all planned out, it's really kind of long and complicated? But basically I'm making a shadowbox for it.

Yeah, I'd go for a purple darker than that. Maybe matching her corset instead, just a couple shades down.

My favourite part has to be the feathers, I think. They're just lovely.

Very interesting and refreshing technique. But I do get the feeling that perhaps it's a bit too much. The feathers, flowers and crownpiece seem to stick out more than the subject itself. Unlike the patterns in the dress, they blend in perfectly, and complement the piece beautifully.

Oh, I can imagine you really wanted to work on this! It's awesome, though I agree the pink board doesn't really do it justice... maybe something blue, like the colour of the water would be better? I don't know really.. I really love the feathers you did here, you said in your WIP they were made of paper, but I could have sworn they were real. Well done!

This really deserves all the attention its getting. What shape will the backing board be? I really like how the feathers stick out of the rectangular shape of the drawing paper...it literally makes it more 3-dimensional.
