This one took FOREVER... And I want to fix it, but that will have to be later, with fresh eyes... I am only making a mess at this point.

For the (sort-of) Annual ConceptArt.org All-Girl Thunderdome this year. Topic was "Something Wicked This Way Comes..." which was probably the most awesome topic ever.

I based mine VERY loosely on the 2012 doomsday cult built around the Mayan Calendar... some kind of horsewoman (snakewoman) of the apocalypse and Quetzalcoatl and a little human sacrifice. Trying to make myself consider whole illos and backgrounds and all that stuff...

Go see all the awesome work here: [link]

In Aztec Mythology the god Quetzalcoatl was actually the most notable god who was completley opposed to the practice of human scarifies.

Most people doesn´t know about it, but sacrifices by Mayans were for the Sun God, they were afraid Sun will never rise again. I like what you do. Quetzalcoatl was a GOD. But Spanish conquers thinking always on the Devil, they never stop to ask what the snake means for the people. The snake was sign of fertility.

Beautiful piece.

You know there is a belief that the Mayan's weren't actually predicting the world would end in 2012 with their calenders, but that the fellow who originally worked the first one out simply got tired of continuing it when he got so far into the future that nobody he knew would ever see it - and nobody else had the mad math skills to continue? :D

Wow I'm please to see someone else researching into the Mayan Culture! That's interesting you depicted a painting of this because I also am working on a piece, but about the Aztecs..Coatlicue..because she just sounds epic to draw. She birthed Huitzilopochtli, who was where the Aztecs supposedly received the believe of their violent nature. I'm reading a book called Native American Prophecies by Scott Peterson. You should look into it!

I really like this. The detail and the fact that it tells a story. Also the colour and composition stand out.

I like the history behind this one, the colors are really good and I think the lighting is perfect for this scene. I have no idea what could be wrong with it.

Well considering the Mayan calendar is just a giant clock ... well, we go back to ... one! Maybe some major changes in all of our lives, but definitely Not the end of the world. However, I digress. This pic is gorgeous and must say that you did good. I love the detail on the snakes and Kukulcan (sorry just can't say Quetzalcoatl!) and the as yet unspecified goddess or demigoddess. Fabulous!
