Comic Book Promotional Art, Malibu Comics, Rafferty Crossover. Pencil, ink, china marker, opaque gouache. Digital color provided by Albert Calleros!

Okay! Because color seems to have the greatest appeal to viewers online, I'm pleased to present this version of a piece I did ages ago, as digitally colored by the great Albert Calleros.

Many years back, when Malibu Comics was in existence out here in Southern California, my buddy Hank Kanalz was an editor there, on the rise at only twelve years of age (NOW, Hank's a Grand High Mucketty-Muck for DC Comics, hangin' out with stars and power-brokers like Jim Lee and such, and he's only seventeen years of age.). Anyway, MISTER Kanalz gave me the assignment of designing art for a company ad featuring a character called Rafferty. Rafferty was a formidable villain, a killer who uses a nasty-looking foot-long blade, with a spiked hand-guard. This guy was going to appear in several Malibu titles, wreaking some serious mayhem. The idea was to tease fans about which of their favorite heroes might be getting killed off. The titles involved were SLUDGE (Hi, Aaron Lopresti!), WARSTRIKE, FREEX (Hey, Ben Herrera!), NIGHTMAN, and PRIME (Howdy, Norm Breyfogle!).

I decided to go with individual panels depicting each book's characters in close-up, all unaware of the deadly danger awaiting them. Rafferty is featured prominently, having cut a huge slash through all of the hero panels, the slash directing the viewer's eye through all the panels, and back to Rafferty himself. Some of the panels drip at the bottom, and there's blood spattered here and there. I submitted this concept, Hank approved the sketch, and this was the final result. I personally requested Albert for the task of coloring the piece, and I think he did a fantastic job! I hope you like it! Cheers!

*With Malibu Comics having been absorbed by Marvel Comics, all legal rights to these characters may have also been transferred.

Since they are all likely to be out of print until every single founding member of the company dies (Marvel, apparently, really does still hate dealing with creator owned characters, Rune's freaking skeleton couldn't even properly appear in a Jim Starlin written Thanos miniseries) I've been looking through bargain bins at various cons, comic shops, and Second And Charles's throughout my state looking for Sludge in particular (I do loves me some vintage Steve Gerber).

What was the team that had a woman that had the ability to go on the internet while meditating and a ninja with cybernetic eyes?

ah fond memories. The malibu universe was reaaly great. Used to love prime, hardcase and nightman. you know what would be cool? Bringing them back with the same care and attention that new Valiant have produced.

Man, I wish you made some comic book interiors more often. The Ultraverse was tons of fun and these characters look amazing when you draw them.

I have SO many books with this ad in them! This is freaking AWESOME!

Thanks for being a huge part of my childhood. Still a Malibu fan to this day.

Childhood?!!

Oh! *ahem!* Well, I was only 12 years old when I made this.
Yeah, that's the ticket. Heh.
Thanks.

Well, I just turned 18 this year...

....yeah, that's the ticket. Don't look at my age listed on my dA page either! It's a vicious lie spread by my enemies. ^^;

I always liked Prime and how being a kid himself; went out if his way to protect children. From a competitive standpoint it's a good get by Marvel as an answer to DC's Shazam.

Maybe DC will answer with developing a New 52 version of Jim Lee's WildC.A.T.s as a counter to X-Men. Probaly just wishful thinking on my part but its something I really want to see.

You didn't draw "The Ferret". I use to love that character. It was a Badger rip off but I was a sucker for those characters. I am pretty sure he was part of the Malibu line up. I actually miss those books. They had a great super hero vibe to them. Those were the days when comics were fun and not so serious all the freaking time.
