UpsideDown Town by jermilex UpsideDown Town by jermilex
Quick concept sketches for a kid's series, this one is about a world where everyone lives upsidedown, but doesn't know it. So the image with be rotated 180 degrees, but I liked it better right side up. There are 2 versions... the top being more fantasy and playful, the bottom being a revision from the client to pull in some other buildings they are already using and to try some new color palettes.

The 3D version of this was completed by my good friend Brett and his fantastic work can be seen here.... [link]

I like the bottom one simply because it makes it feel more friendly and a little more familiar, the top one I have to say is gorgeous work as is the bottom, but for the book I like the bottom one better.

What can I say, this is amazing. I have one tiny crit, though. To me personally, in the one at the top, it looks like night when you look at the bottom quarter of the picture. But it's actually day, as the sky suggests.

Other than that, it looks fantastic.

thank you! Good critique. I was going for a dusk kind of feeling with the area under the bridge being dark (and thus needing street lighting)

I really love this concept, kinda made me feel a bit like a kid again, even before I read the description on what it's for. :D
It's been a pleasure!

Both images are really cool. I gotta say I do like the one on the bottom maybe more because of the variations in color. Still, really neat looking at both versions.

hey great job! The second one looks good the first one is kinda all the same which is understandable its like an alien planet kinda look.. how long did it take you to sketch this? Ive been working on a scene for work and to my shame its taking me 2 weeks... but then again i can only spend about an hour or two on it because i multitask making other things at the same time and fixing other videos... but still no excuse i think i need to be faster...

What I struggle with most is the use of color--what to use for highlights, for shading, for different lighting situations. Are there any good books or tutorials you can reccommend to me?

Well, my best thoughts on the subject can be found here....

Also Marco Bucci has a bunch of great tutorials and such that talk about color and light. Go through his gallery and see his links to his YouTube videos.

I really don't know of many great books on the subject, not to say they aren't out there.
