As a very thin model who publishes a lot of photos publicly, there's a topic I feel the need to address. A lot of people seem to think that images of skinny models are bad and dangerous because they are going to cause people to develop eating disorders. This is a total misconception.

First, let me tell you a little about my past. A lot of you already know this, but bear with me. I have this thing called sensory processing disorder, which basically means that I don't feel things the same way as most people. One way this affects me is that food is usually not enjoyable; in fact, it's quite often difficult or painful for me to eat. Because of this, my weight at one point dropped to a dangerous low, and my team of doctors insisted that I go to an inpatient eating disorder hospital so my weight could be restored safely. While I was there, I bonded deeply with many of the other patients. We had group therapy sessions together, and I learned all about the deep dark ugly secret side of eating disorders, how they work, and why they come into peoples' lives. A desire to be thin is usually part of the disorder, but 100% of the time, that's just the shallow, surface-level manifestation of some much deeper psychological problem. It's different for everyone, but zero people with eating disorders simply want to be skinny, and that's all there is to it. There's always something else going on inside.

If images of thin models cause eating disorders, why doesn't every single person who has ever seen a picture of someone skinny have an eating disorder right now? That's because the problem isn't the images, the problem is the disordered individual's psyche. Sure, we all might look at a picture of someone attractive and from time to time feel a bit inadequate by comparison, I think that's normal. That's not a disorder, or a medical condition. For that feeling to escalate into something diagnosable, one must already have the genetic and psychological/emotional setup in place. Pictures of skinny people can't cause eating disorders jut like pictures of disorganized objects can't cause OCD.

I recognize that looking at photos of emaciated people can be extremely damaging to people struggling with, or in recovery from, eating disorders. I, personally, would feel very sad to learn that a picture of myself had upset one of my friends from treatment! But it's their job to choose to protect themselves from (or expose themselves to) their triggers in the world, not mine. Fun fact: I struggle with self harm. I don't ask my friends to hide all the kitchen knives when I come over for dinner. Recovering alcoholics can choose to walk into a bar and have a soda with their friends, or pass by because the drinks are too tempting, but (I'd hope) they wouldn't try to burn the place down!

Please consider this before you go supporting that new law that bans underweight runway models, or make a mean comment about a model's weight online. I think the most damage being done in this whole situation is to the models who have to take cruel criticisms about a supposed evil they're committing, when all we're really doing is trying to earn a living and expressing ourselves artistically.
