Story: Word count: 520
And so the cycle began like every race. The Apocalypse was being led to the gates but as usual, her more excitable side started to show which resulted in the typical rearing and snapping of her teeth. The mare was lead into circles, several times in fact, more than usual until she was deemed settled enough to enter the gates. The handler loaded her up into the gates and climbed up into the usual position being sure to stand behind the mares head and not in front of it as she was being more snippy than usual. The sound of WPF Questioning Faith banging against the metal stalls caused Apollo to be more riled. The chestnut mare squealed back in response to the fleebitten grey and tossed her head, ears pinned and teeth bared. Her tail swished angrily and she danced in place, ready to run and show her abilities. Her body began to tense in anticipation of the gates, her jockey MJ lowered down onto her back, grabbing a handful of the reins and adjusting herself to the mares rigid back. As soon as the bell rang and the doors slammed opened, they were off! Apollo busted out of the gates like a bat out of hell, her head high, ears pinned and stride long. You could feel the mares powerful muscles tense and then relax as they made contact with the firm ground beneath her feet, her strides were long but elegant as she galloped with the pack. As they all turned around the first bend, Apollo picked up speed and fought against the reins, from the corner she could see Questioning Faith but didn't linger onto the mare for long seeing as she was burning herself out, Apollo kept an surprisingly exceptional pace between TLEC Such a Classic and BTs Blackbeard Got Some Ink , their strides matching as they galloped. WBS Ghost hour was not far behind the pack in fact, she was quite close to keeping up but Apollo's mind was not on the ghostly figure but focused ahead. The mare tried to pick up even more of a pace to try and out run Blackbeard and Klassy but MJ pulled back on the reins and kept steady pressure however, it didn't stop Apollo, instead of fighting the bit and her jockey, she did her typical “hop” while in mid run. Before MJ could even gather what was going on, the mares hind quarters tensed with power as she straightened herself up before leaping mid air and gaining enough that it brought her in front of them but not much, the mare landed back on all hooves and picked up her normal long stride as if this leap was nothing, as if she had not done It at all. Apollo's nostrils flared, letting out a loud squeal in aggravation of not gaining more ground, her head tossed while she chewed at the metal bit in her mouth. Whether she would place good in this race would be on how well she ran and at this moment, her antics were probably causing more harm than good.
