I couldn't think of a name for this. Ugh! Guess this works till I think of something better.

Photoshop.

I don't use custom brushes, those paint-y looking parts are just some paint strokes I scanned in a while ago and alpha-ed.

Do you use some kind of smudge tool? For blending?

Thanks!
jeffsimpsonkh's avatar
hi, no, smudge tool makes things look horrifically "photoshoppy" so I avoid it at all costs

Ok, thanks for your reply! Your work is really amazing, so I always try to decipher how you've done such smooth skin tones..

welllllllllll it's not too complicated, since it's photoshop there is no actual "blending" going on at all, it's just layers of various colours of various opacity right. it's all in how you apply lighter colours over top of darker ones and keep your brushes on lower opacity and controlling your pressure wisely.

Oooooh, now I get it! Controlling the opacity... It's it seems really dumb but I never thought about it. I use smudge with a special brush that I got from Darkeen.com working with greys and then I use gradient map for the colors. But I keep looking cos I find it very time taking, despite being very editable. Fantastic work, as always. Thank you for your time, Jeff!

haha well looking at ur stuff - looks like you've already got a good technique going on haha. Just do it whichever way you feel most comfortable. Though with my method, it's not much different to the cell shading u got going on, just fill in the darker tones first, then on a new layer softly add the mid-tones in the same shape you would already with cell shading, except rounder objects will have a softer edge etc.

I'm trying your method on one particular work I'm doing right now, once I finish it, could you take a look?

In paintings like this, how do you start? Making a Black&White painting first? or building with colours from the beginning?

theres something about the stroke you did around her chin that i love, and the same thing with the hair been kinda plain, i dont dig out those stroke brushes you say, the white takes away a lot of attention, but minor thing.

Gorgeous! Her hair and crown or stars are just fantastically rendered. Top notch. Thanks for sharing your work.
