Done for the Hysterical Minds Exhibition HM11: Empathy.

This is my first cityscape, I think :)
I wanted it to have a touch of sci-fi without looking too futuristic. Hope you like it.

Perfecto, simplemente Perfecto
Por 4 razones:

1- Amo las ciudades grandes y esta esto me recuerda a una metrópolis gigantesca.

2- Me gusta el estilo futurístico. Tu lo has representado bastante bien.

Brilliant detial, firstly. I am immediately struck by the lighting and luminosity of the piece that still manages to portray the night. The wet road is stunning, as well as the styling of the buildings. You have mangaged to blend the dirty, red 'old' with the sleek, blue 'modern' themes beautifully.

Your composition is excellent; my eye was immediately drawn to the two neon signs, the split towers of the lowest new building, and the old building seemingly adjacent to it. Marvellous positioning of the horizon and corrisponding vanishing point marked by the golden light in the distance of the street. I also love the personality you added to everyone on the street; from the men by the fire to the girls at the door and the bustle further in. It portrays such...life.

All in all a fantastic piece of work on nemerous levels. Well done.

Thank you so much for your support! The fact that someone takes the time to observe all the the details makes it worth putting so much time into a piece.
I really appreciate it, thanks again!

A pleasure :) I admire artists with your level of skill, so observing those details is one of the ways I hope to learn and improve. This is a phenominal reference and a beautiful aesthetic piece, however one plans on viewing it. Be it recreational, inspriational or technical, this is an artwork that's time investment has made it truly worthwhile.

This is my first time writing a critique, so if I seem unfair in any way, my apology is in advance.

First off, this is a piece that immediatly caught my attention. The use of color, and the way everything is portrayed on this image is just brilliant.

One of my favorite parts about this piece has to be the backround. The way it stand out amongst the foreground really draws your focus to it.

And of course, the main part of the image. The way you made the District a bit older looking was done very nicely.

I really love this. Keep up the good work.

Thank you so much! Glad you like the piece and the contrast between the two parts of the city:)

I love the light blurring of everything, the softness of the light. It feels as if I am there, wide eyed and new trying to drink everything withmy eyes in at once and I can nearly hear the sounds of the street. The transition between the street with its puddles and reflections and slight seediness to the glitzy skyscrapers is blended well and shows a nice transition between implied socioeconomic areas. I love that every time I look up from this I seem to notice something new in the picture.

My only question (concern?) is with the sky. The sky overall is lovely, with a nice representation of what city lights do to a sky and only a few stars coming through, but I can't seem to puzzle out what the 'things' in the sky are? They remind me of lanterns, air ships, or rents in a fabricated sky- as if the city existed within a dome and the sky is peeling from the framework.

Overall a lovely picture though, and should I have the chance, I would love to have it on my wall.

Im not writing critiques. But if I can see it...my critique is : Yes, this work i can imagine on my wall at home.
Details are excellent, border between nite sky and shining city ( its like first street to the right from main venue) is giving it " eyes-catching" aspect, reflection of the wet street and slightly blurred feeling..even angle is chosen very well.
Im curious if it is in acc. to real place or pure fantasy..in the both cases its perfect. ( I have feeling I was there..)
Summary..Im giving maximum points and im sure it will be DD and you will sell it very easily and quickly..

Thank you so much!! It's fantasy, although some areas are based on pictures I saw of streets from places like Hong Kong :)

Looks like a nice portrayal of a seedy and squalid underside of a freeway. Futuristic is nice, but one has to remember that old stuff often persists, particularly in bad parts of town like this one. This rendition keeps that in mind very well. For example, that car looks like a model current to our time, but run down by the time this "photograph" was (will be) taken. What's going on there? Looks like either a drug deal or a john cruising for a prostitute? I see some other prostitutes hanging near the car. The buildings close to us look even older in stark constrast to the brand-new towers in background.

I would not want to visit this place without being at least discreetly armed. You captured the look of wet, dirty, and palpable danger quite well.

Thanks so much for the critique! I love it when people come up with stories and background for a piece, and you really nailed what I had in mind :)

Could you do another bad part of town picture from the future? Maybe 100 years in the future?
jcbarquet's avatar
Yeah, it's a subject I haven't really done before, so it's definitely something I plan to do :)

Very good perspective and the lighting is very well done. The lighting has a certain warmth to it as it spreads out. It actually works in very good contrast with the dark blue sky above.

I especially like the illusion of the shiny wet pavement that people are walking on. That is not an easy effect to achieve. You did it well. The people also seem to have some movement, especially with the lighting on them. This reminds me of Blade Runner a bit. Great work overall This has some serious impact! It makes me want to visit this place in your painting!

Thanks a lot for your comment! Glad you like it, and yeah, it is loosely inspired by that great movie :)

Hey youre welcome! :)
Actually, this reminds me of a very futuristic Chicago, with the El way up there on what looks like an elevated railway. GREAT job.
