yes, i'm doing really well at the moment, although i'm
still pretty sick i've managed to get out and about.
here is a synopsis of my past week.
Mon - gig at the Riverside with Grandfather Birds, Night of Sevens, and Ajimal
(really it was Fran) and then Jan talked me into going with him
and some other friends to the head of steam for some drinks.
Jan was telling us about his adventures in Amsterdam, i was
trying out Paul's film lens held up to the front of my camera.
Alex and Hope wanted to go home, but i didn't want to leave
with Jan's story untold and i kept telling them hang on, hang
on! so i could hear more of it, until they walked out so i had
to leave. Then on our way home we came across a young lad who
had been with his mates and were attacked by some chavs. we
gave him a jumper to hide his conspicuous pink freshers top and
actually passed some of the people who had jumped him earlier.
we found a policeman and told him what happened and then walked
him to his block of flats. his friends showed up with some
blood and bruises and ripped clothes, but nothing really
serious. and after leaving them we walked on towards my flat
where we met a lad called Donovan who shares a birthday with
the famous Donovan Leitch who is doing his dissertation on the
canon and the graphic novel. he had beer and no cigarettes, and
we had cigarettes and no beer, so he ended up walking all the
way back to mine with us and talking about the work he was
doing and some other writers like poe and kerouac til the sun
tues - there was a party at mine for a friend's birthday.
well it didn't start out being a birthday party, we'd just rang
aorund people to come and it happened to be Scott's birthday!
we had soup and cake and everything but people only drank the
alcohol and we used almost every available drinking utensil in
the house, including plastic cups and willoware teacups.
everyone who came was a musician except one lad named Brian who
is a filmmaker. Jan got my film scanner to work on my computer
and asked me, do you like Animal collective, jazzy? he and
Stephen were also telling me about Joaquin Phoenix's David
Letterman interview which i never saw so we were watching it in
the livingroom when people came in and started having things to
say about it that the three of us didn't agree with. however my
two best friends, Jan and Stephen, left in a taxi around
midnight. everyone else stayed up watching star wars until
about half four in the morning. i got up and tidied the flat
and anyone left who was still sleeping got up and went home.
wed - i met Jan and Stephen at the tyne bar where i also
did a small photoshoot with Danny and the other DJs. Jan gave
me a smashing little polaroid camera that can take double
exposed images and a mix tape cd and we all walked along the
quayside to the other side of the river to gateshead together
talking and listening to Jan who kept us entertained with his
true stories of his life, and he helped me up on his bike so i could cycle it around a bit, singing
i've got a bike you can ride it if you like.. then we got a cab back to my flat for
thurs - jan was working so stephen and i went to a gig at
the cluny and then to the head of steam afterwards, but it was
full of chavers so we went across the street to north bar where
my mate Marcus was spinning some tunes. then a fight broke out
and it took nearly half an hour for the police to arrive. at
one point they fell on top of Sarah. but it was better than
television. i got a cab home with some neighbours who are in a
band together - including Dolly and Martin, and Martin came
over for a coffee, and was playing my guitar. i said - i've got
another one. so i brought it out and he said John Perry, this
is the john perry guitar. i used to have one like this! but
this WAS his - the very same one! he'd traded it in about 8
years ago at Windows, and i bought it at windows. we looked at
pictures of guitars on the internet for about an hour and then
he went home.
Fri - i went into town for a gig, but discovered i had no
idea where it actually was. i also had a late gig at the o2 so
i met some people at the dog and parrot for a drink beforehand.
Jack, one of the young lads who comes to the gigs had me sit
next to him and meet his friends. Also i took some photos of
friends outside and inside and one lad was showing me his shoes
saying, get a picture of these beauties! then i went to the
academy for The Traitors and Abduction of Margaret. i was
shooting the drummer for the Traitors when i accidentally
unplugged the guitar, and they turned around and looked at me
and i hurried up and plugged it back in, and got a big grin
back. when the gig was over the punters who came to see Dirty
Pop were giving me a bit of a hard time, and although Jaimie
had promised me a lift home, i was far too ill and being
bothered by too many people so i went in the cab with Alex and
Hope and by the time i went to bed it was 6 in the morning.
Sat - i had a 12pm booksigning to go to for my friend Simon
Donald's new book and then i came home for a nap before going
out to shoot Frankie and the Heartstrings - the gig was sold
out and i had to find a ticket for Stephen only because Jan was
at work and Dann wouldn't come out. After the gig a fight broke
out from some people coming out of the ship inn, and we watched
and listened to it, as well as several people up on byker
bridge until they went running away because the police came and
i said goodbye to stephen and walked on home. on my way home i
came across a man who had both hands stuck in his letterbox.
his girlfriend was trying to help him get them out and i said,
hello! do you need any help? and they smiled and said oh no,
we're fine! and i said, well..okay. and started walking away,
then thought, i've got my camera with me and i came back with
the little one and said, i'm going to take your photo. and they
smiled. but it was apparent he was NOT going to be fine, so i
ended up stopping whilst we discussed the best way to free him.
i asked his name and he said Charlie...you can call me Chuck -
Stuck Chuck! haha. his girlfriend was called Lindsay. Charlie
was getting very agitated with her and he was dying for a
cigarette, so i held it for him - but it had butter all over
the end cos we'd buttered his hands really well. i told him i
had some experience with letterboxes as i deliver newspapers,
and he said have you ever come across anything like this in
your travels? and i said no! this is a first! anyway it took
over an hour - we buttered him up, put ice on his hands on the
other side of the door to reduce the swelling, pried the
letterbox open with a screwdriver and then soaped up his hands
and pulled the skin taught so he could manoever his way out and
one hand was free so he had another smoke. and then we did the
same to the other and they said come in for a glass of wine! so
i did and we had wine and smoked, petted the cat and talked and
they added me on facebook. great way to meet people. so i went
home with my frankie photos but it was about half 4 in the
morning when i got there.
Sun - Today Malachi, Hope, Alex, Stephen and i went to see
Back to the Future at the Empire. strangely enough it wasn't
that crowded. But it was as funny as ever, so 80s!
Jan would have loved to be there i'm sure as he is a very 80's person.
Then Stephen cycled home and we walked into and home from town where we been
sat drinking wine and smoking. And I was talking to Jan on fb and we're not going to
paris anytime soon but we should still be going to see Toro y
Moi in Edinburgh on the 31st!
