The Breaking Shadows by Jayie-The-Hufflepuff The Breaking Shadows by Jayie-The-Hufflepuff
Blazepaw looked away from the leaders, his gaze sweeping over the other ShadowClan cats. He spotted Shrewfoot slipping out of a bramble den, a few familiar faces following her. He stiffened. “There,” he mewed aloud, flicking an ear towards the three cats. “Those are the cats I saw stealing prey.”

Tigerstar and Bramblestar both turned to look at the warriors Blazepaw had indicated. Bramblestar's gaze darkened with anger, and Tigerstar's eyes widened. Then, to Blazepaw's surprise, anger blazed in his eyes, his expression hardening. “Shrewfoot! Smokefoot! Snowbird!” he barked, voice sharp with anger. “Get over here. All three of you.”

The three cats looked up in surprise. They all shared a glance, then approached Tigerstar. Now that he could see them closer, Blazepaw was surprised to see how much better-fed they looked than their Clanmates. And a closer inspection of the camp showed that they weren't the only ones. Pinenose's black pelt was sleek against her strong frame, and Crowfrost looked far less frail than his denmates. Blazepaw felt a surge of horror. Were these cats not only stealing prey, but keeping it for
themselves, rather than using it to feed their Clanmates? What kind of warriors were they?

“Yes, Tigerstar?” Shrewfoot asked lightly, she and the other warriors halting in front of their leader. Her tone was polite, but there was a defiant light to her yellow eyes as she met Tigerstar's gaze.

Tigerstar bared his fangs, a growl rumbling in his throat. He glared at his warriors, demanding, “Is this true? You stole prey from ThunderClan's territory?”

Shrewfoot didn't so much as twitch a whisker at Tigerstar's anger. She kept her easy expression, and a cool tone, as she told him, “I don't know what you're talking about.” Even as she spoke in a polite tone, there was the faintest gleam of defiance in her eyes, something almost smug, as if she was mocking her leader.

“ThunderClan cats saw you,” Tigerstar spat, voicing rising in anger. Every cat in camp was staring at him now. A hush had fallen over the camp – they were all waiting to see what their leader would do next. “Are you going to stand here and lie to me? You will show your leader respect!”

The huge tabby was furious, back arched and hackles bristling, seeming even larger in his anger, but Shrewfoot didn't even blink. Calmly, she suggested, “Perhaps this isn't a conversation to having in front of our guests.” She gave the ThunderClan cats a significant glance...

This took a few good days, and I'm still not entirely happy, but it's finally done. :D After making my new Tigerstar family designs (well some of them, I still have more to make), I was in a really big mood to draw two of them in the same picture. I decided to draw a scene from my fanfiction series, Echoes of the War, and the book in that series The Broken Shadow where the new ShadowClan leader Tigerstar (formerly Tigerheart) and Bramblestar have a confrontation about stolen ThunderClan prey. Here's the end result of that idea. :D The text above is from said scene.

This scene in particular gave me the chance to play with several things, not all of which I executed successfully, but oh well. ^^ It was a great way to test out my Tigerstar II and Bramblestar designs side by side, to show the similarities and differences in their designs, and just have fun with that. :D As for Snowbird and Smokefoot, let's just say they're standing out of sigh behind Bramblestar. :P Tigerstar looks a bit shorter than Bramblestar here, which was intentional, but we'll just say he has a touch more growing to do, since he's still kinda young. I dunno, what's my excuse. :P It was also really cool getting to draw my new Ivypool design in an illustration for the first time, she looks a bit washed out in that shading but I still like how she looks. ^^

It was also a great chance to play around with size differences in general. Shrewfoot and Olivenose are pretty average in size for cats, so it was cool to show their size difference compared to Tiger and Bramble, and it was cool to show Ivypool being a bit taller and kinda muscular, then Blazepaw being fairly tall and lithe, and Silentpaw nearly as tall as Bramblestar behind him. :D It was also great getting to draw Blazepaw and Silentpaw with all these canon characters. :D No scars for them yet since they haven't fought in any battles yet by this point, but they're at their fullgrown size since they're at the end of their training.

I tried to make every cat's reactions to the situation fitting. Tigerstar is snarling and glaring at Shrewfoot, as the text says, and she's looking kinda smugly back at him, as stated. Olivenose is keeping a close eye on Shrewfoot, well aware that she's the most dangerous element in this current confrontation, not the enemy warriors and leader in her camp. Bramblestar is holding his head proudly and stiffly, curling his lip in disdain for Tigerstar and for Shrewfoot. Ivypool is carefully measuring Tigerstar's behavior like Bramblestar asked her to, since she knows him from their DF training, and she's showing a fair bit of contempt for his somewhat childish behavior. Blazepaw is watching Tigerstar un-leader like behavior with his usual emotion at that age, worry. :P Mostly worry over what such shaky leadership in ShadowClan will mean for his own Clan. And Silentpaw is also worried about that, so a similar expression.

I also played with more plot-relevant elements to their designs. Specifically, skininess due to the harsh winter season and poor hunting. Tigerstar is stated to look really skinny and ragged in that chapter, so I tried to really get that across. Olivenose is also a bit bony, but since she's a queen, she's a bit better fed than her mate, and you can see her belly sagging with her kits. Bramblestar is a bit ill-fed too, but not as badly as his ShadowClan kin, and the rest of the ThunderClan cats are even better-fed. Shrewfoot, as stated in the text, is better-fed than her leader and non-followers, so she doesn't get the bony look. I'm not entirely happy with how the shading on the bony parts of the cats look, but I still think it looks pretty decent. ^^

Tigerstar and Bramblestar also both get leader eye stars. ^^ I know it's a bit hard to see because it's so small, but Tigerstar has nine since he has all nine lives at this point in the story, and Bramblestar has six, since he's lost three lives by this point in the story (I had a document where I kept notes on when each leader life was lost in EOTW while writing it).

This was also a chance to draw ShadowClan's camp and try for a new terrain. I'm not sure I pulled it off totally well, but I think it looks alright. ShadowClan's camp is stated to be a dip in the forest floor, beneath the pine trees, surrounded by bramble bushes. Since it's leafbare, the bramble bushes around the camp are bare, hence their tangled bare branches kind of look. I have a bit of grass on the ground, and a tree within the camp walls, and mostly dirt, which I think fits well with the pine forest look. There's pine needles all over the ground, shed from the pine trees above. I'm not totally happy with how the camp turned out, but I think it's pretty decent.

Overall, I'm really happy with how this turned out. :D

Didn't Tigerstar have 8 lives at that point?

He didn't lose his first life until his attack on ThunderClan's camp, and that hasn't happened yet by this point, so he's still got all nine lives here.

Can we like take a minute to appreciate Tiger’s extremely fluffy tail? I’m joking, simply amazing as always.

Dang...Shrewfoot is tiny, even smaller than Blazepaw and Silentpaw who are almost ready to be made warriors, but are still fairly young.

But dear Olivenose...gorgeous as always.
