This one was a fun one to draw. Here is the next installment of my little mini-project where I draw all of the non-prologue POV characters for each Warriors series.
This time we've got the POV characters for the fifth and sixth series of Warriors, Dawn of the Clans and A Vision of Shadows, leaving only one series left to do. ^^
For DOTC, we have Gray Wing, Thunder, and Clear Sky. Gray Wing's character arc was all about him doing his best to look after his family, and finding peace and contentment in knowing that he's given them a good life and that they're happy with their own Clans now. He's not one of the leaders with a Clan named after him, but there would be no Clans without him - he is the heart of the early Clans, he is the center of their morality and compassion. He gave so much love to the cats in his care, and he was given love in return by the cats who knew him as a father. I wanted to show that sense of contentment at the end of a life well lived in his calm expression and easy posture. I added a darker belly color to his design, he looked a bit too plain without it, but that's the only change I made to his design.
For Thunder, I wanted to show his strength and confidence as a leader, which he grew into throughout his arc. Hence the sort of regal posture, with the tail tucked around him and the strong, challenging expression. I changed his design a lot - I based it off the cover of Thunder Rising before, and that inspiration is still there, but I decided to change his colors to match his "bright, fiery ginger" description more. I also got rid of the white eye markings, and changed the belly fur markings on the face and tail a bit. I really like how his new colors turned out.
I'll upload a new ref sheet for him with these colors eventaully.
For Clear Sky, his arc started with him as a cruel tyrant forcing war on others through his greed and fear, only to realize the full horror of what he'd done after the hot rage of battle had cooled, and he could see the bodies bleeding out on the battleground. The rest of his arc in the series was about struggling to be a better cat and make up for what he'd done, and to become the leader his group truly needed. But mostly, I think that regret for what he'd already done, and especially how he'd ruined his relationship with his son, was what stood out about his arc, so I really tried to show that in his dejected pose and the way he's looking at Thunder. I don't like how his character was all of the time, and I don't think he's fully gotten better from where he started, but it was clear that he regretted a lot of it, so I focused on that here. I changed his colors to make them lighter and less saturated. I'll upload a new sheet for him soon. He and Thunder are both large cats, though Thunder is bigger, and Gray Wing is rather small and lithe, hence the size differences here.
For AVOS, we have Alderheart, Twigbranch, and Violetshine. Alderheart's arc is really about gaining confidence in himself as a medicine cat, and about his relationship with Twigbranch and helping to raise her and care for her. I wanted to show him with the confidence he ends his arc with, looking proudly at the she-cat he helped shape into the warrior she is now. For Twigbranch and Violetshine, I wanted to focus on their relationship as sisters, and their own personal character arcs. To me, it seems like Twigbranch's arc was about growing confident as a warrior and finding her place in ThunderClan, and I wanted to show that confidence in her pose. For Violetshine, it was about confidence as well, but more about realizing that she is worthy of love, that she doesn't have to live her life accepting how others treat her, and learning how to accept love when offered by others. So Twigbranch is giving her sister some affection here, and Violetshine is accepting it gratefully, rather than turning away out of fear like she would before.
Alderheart is large, though not huge like his father, and has a naturally bulkier build. Twigbranch is a bit on the large side for a she-cat, but not huge, and still smaller than Alderheart. She has a bulkier build as well from her father. Violetshine is a bit smaller than average and lithe. I tried to get that all across here.
For the backgrounds, I went with the golden shade of Gray Wing's eyes for DOTC. There are other important characters and other POV characters, but Gray Wing is really at the heart of the whole story, so it felt fitting to use his eye color for the background. The pattern is, of course, the Blazing Star. It started out as just an important herb to cure the illness ravaging the camps, but it ended up becoming a symbol of the unity of the Clans, even when they seem divided. It's such a central symbol to the series, I had to use it.
For AVOS, I used Darktail's eye color for the background. He was only in the first half of the series, but he's such a prominent villain, it felt fitting to use his eyes. For the pattern, I used the tree used in the Clan symbol for SkyClan. The series revolves around SkyClan's return to the lake and their reunion with the other Clans, so I thought it was fitting to use.
Overall, I'm really happy with how this turned out, especially the AVOS one.
Sorry, I know the description was pretty rambling, my thoughts are a bit rambling right now, I spent the day packing. But yeah.
