Admiral Naismith and Sergeant Taura by jay042 Admiral Naismith and Sergeant Taura by jay042
These were some background characters I created for that fourth page of my Babylon 5/Doctor Who crossover. They come from the science fiction book series by Lois McMaster Bujold about Miles Vorkosigan.

Miles Vorkosigan (aka Naismith) is the son of a highly placed noble family from the planet Barrayar. He suffered from some pre-natal damage to his bones, which left them incredibly brittle and easily broken. Barrayar had suffered a lot of genetic mutations in it's past, and was not very kind to his deformities. Despite his limits, he pushed forward, achieving a military career in Barrayar's Imperial Security. His main role in Impsec was serving as Admiral Naismith, the commander of the Dendarii Free Mercenaries. Galactic politics makes it hard for a government military force to travel freely though a lot of start systems, but a mercenary fleet does not have such limitations, which made them very useful in forwarding Barrayar's interests.

Sargent Taura is the product of genetic engineering to create a perfect solider. The program was deemed a failure, since the other members of her batch had died early. Naismith rescued her from her creators, who had left her to die in a dungeon, and she soon proved herself an impressive soldier in the Dendarii.

Hmmm..Miles Vorkosigans universe seems so very different than Babylon 5. Bab 5 doesn't really do a lot gene manipulation stuff, the angst about Psi-Corps was all about the fact that the Corps tore apart families. If you can just decant your Psychics that Angst goes away. Same with the fact that that Bab 5 was all about Racial Politics in the Galaxy at large with the various strengths and weaknesses of each species was one of the main sub-themes. I dunno seems like an odd match to me. but a good execution can eliminate those differences in tone and theme, so I'm curious.
