Ranna Kerensky by JarrodOwen Ranna Kerensky by JarrodOwen
One of a series of images commissioned by a client of one of his favourite BattleTech characters. Turns out she's not quite the ice cold killer I had been led to believe she was back when I drew her portrait for CGL some time ago. Despite being a formidable opponent on the battlefield, she also possesses a sensitivity and creativity which makes her rather unusual among mech pilots - an aspect of her which I attempted to capture in this image.

Is that a Simia Vespertilis Glorieii or the Surat?

Been a while since I did this, but I think the client called it a Surat, the name sounds familiar.

Surats are small friendly simian like creatures that are natives to the clan home worlds they make popular pets but can be trouble makers.

Ah, so the wing structure is also striped red and white. Interesting, didn't realize it in Lethal Heritage.

I love the lighting in this piece, and great work on including Jehu - I haven't seen a surat illustrated before :D

I believe that's correct, nckeo. To the best of my knowledge, the surat is referenced all over the place in Battletech fiction but has never been illustrated. Or if it has, I've never seen the picture.

As the person that commissioned this piece, I'd like to first do a victory lap for owning it. ;)

All jokes aside, I wanted to reply to what The-Colonel-382 posted. The character caught my fancy from the first reading of the Stackpole novels. I loved the clash of strong warrior with such gentle undertones. However, as you noted, the past art of her has been terrible, either in artistic quality or in failing to really "catch" the complexity of a woman that's both a trained killer and also an artist, lover, pet owner, and prankster.

That's what motivated me to seek out some commissions of her. I saw Jarrod had done the most recent art for her, and I could tell from first blush that the potential was there, but the character hadn't been sufficiently explained to him. It turns out I was right. After sending him a few passages from the prose, he got to work. I'm beyond pleased with the final product.

Thanks for sharing this with us - you don't see much BattleTech fanart around these days of the "classics". :)

Wow!!!!

this has now become my FAVORITE picture of Ranna. Your other picture you did for CGL is a close second.
In all the other artwork I have seen of her she either looks to alien or looks like she is going to rip your throat out.

It is great to see one of the, in my opinion, pivotal characters in The Blood of Kerensky trilogy given her dues.

Such a beautiful picture! Lighting is fantastic, skin tone, depth, foreshortening, critter and texture. Sooo good. Even the lit details on the window are awesome. May I ask how long does something like this take?

Thanks! How long? Hmm, that's difficult to say. It must have been 20 hours or more for this particular image. There was quite a bit of experimentation involved, elements of the image that were drawn up in the initial stages but ultimately weren't used. Sometimes you have a clear idea of how the image is going to look from the very beginning and the process is much smoother, not quite the case with this one. Reminds me that I still have a lot to learn!
