Breathing Mech (colony wars 2060 lore)
Mechs don't breathe, but they sometimes look like they do
Every mech has an auto balancer. Some are advanced and others more robust (many simpler mechs use accelerometers). But no device can endure wear and tear on the battlefield
Often, after a long battle, the auto balancer is in need of calibrations, until it can be calibrated it is constantly in the process of compensating the balance of the mech (especially if the mech has less ammo or fewer limbs, throwing off the weight)
This compensating action can take the form of the mech shifting weight from one leg to another, jitters all throughout the machine, or in many cases the torso adjusting its position through a breathing-like movement.
Many older mechs in service retain these movements even after calibrations. Giving a type of personality to long service machines.
Many will see these balance adjustments and anthropomorphize the mech, and even believe a possible sentience in the machine.
It's not uncommon for some pilots to talk to their mechs while outside the machine, taking the small movements of the mechs as a type of reaction. Other pilots find themselves comfortable with the movement while in the cockpit, and will often prefer to postpone calibrations in order to keep the "character" of their mech. The opposite possible outcome is that sometimes pilots get suspicious of their machines as they swear their mech is cursed or is watching them.
