Homeworld Heavy Crusier by Jarndahusky Homeworld Heavy Crusier by Jarndahusky
If you have played Homeworld, then you might recognize various aspects of this. I took a Heavy Crusier, the Kushan Avater, and modified it a whole bunch. I think she looks better this way, in my opinion.

Homeworld is copyright to Sierra

Always felt the HW1 Kushan heavy cruiser was such an ugly design especially the bow. This is a major improvement.

In all the elegance of Kushani Design, the heavy cruiser was the most unimaginable. Second really to the Collector.

I've seen it prior, Downloaded it, and tried it. It is an interesting work. Embellishments have been made to certain designs. I certainly appreciate the care and love put into this product, and certainly answers many Homeworld Fan's desires that have followed it from birth.

Long story Short: Very Cool! Need Help?

Yes, but the fun thing is that there is story behind every vessel. I suppose in a way where there is a story and idea behind it, it becomes better in many ways.

I do agree that It'd be cool to see the original HW ships in a higher polygon range with some realistic rendering. Would be beautiful.

We need a remake of original homeworld with next gen graphic, its a shame that spaceship games were always on the lower end of hardware spect.

God, I love HW1&Cataclysm ships design. Some may say it's boxy and not sublime at all but I frickin' love it. Its a shame there's so little fanworks of this timeless game. Thanks for sharing with us your HW art.

I'm too sick to judge... but it makes me wonder, are the textures from HW or your own make?

The Textures are from Homeworld as well. I mearly took the original model and modified its form. I took peices and parts from other ships in the game and added them on with modifications to those as well. The textures still did fit the model since I didn't remove or add parts, so the texture mapping was basically unchanged for any of the model parts.

Well, I think the texture on the sides of the beak is stretched...

Mind showing us a 'side by side' of the old and new one, so tha we might see the difference?

And while I'm at it, how does one rip textures and models from HW, and to what program?

Well, in order to extract the files, you have to aquire a program called Big Viewer. It allows you to access the .big file in the game. It should be availbel for download somewhere with it being one of those mod development tools. Within the .big file you'll find a directories called R1, R2, P1, P2 and others that I can't name off the top of my head. These are the ship folders. You can go through this to find certain models, or you can extract the entire directory.

Once you have that, if you have the proper program, you can edit it right off. If not, you will want to get Deep Exploration or similar to convert the files and textures to a format that would be compatable with your programs. I converted them over to 3DS files and the .lif files (the textures) became .bmp. From there you can probubly figure out the rest if you are handy with modeling programs.

Indeed the textures are streached. I don't know much about texture mapping, but I do know that when I modified that part, I made some of the polygons bigger, which caused the texture to be streached out more on it. As a result it's got that icky look. But I don't know much on how to map textures, muchless how to compensate, so as a result that's what we have.

I might upload the original version should I get the ambition to do it. I'm trying to model up another ship right now, and that's where my ambition/insperation is going right now.

Thanks very much. I'll try it out when I get the time. I know from some minor research that R1 is Kushaan, R2 is Taidaan, P1 are the Turanic raiders and P2 are the Zealots.

Oh, and there is no a in stretch. Just a head's-up.

Well, the Zealots are more along the lines of the Kadesh, but yes, Tis what they are. Traders is also the Bentusie, while derlicts contains much of the random stuff you see floating around.

Looks cool.
I wonder how people come up with the ideas for ship details?

Wherever insperation can be found. Take a design you like, grab diffrent things that you enjoy of other designs and mix and match. You could also just start from scratch, think of the purpose behind your ship, then alter the design and such to best suit your needs. It's really quite enjoyable and satisfying.
