No, your browser has not taken an odd turn and decided to display deviantART in a wacked out manner.  Welcome to DAv3!

Our resident programming expert chris and CSS god Pachunka, along with a number of other folks, have created the future of deviantART. DAv3, while online, is still a work in progress but we wanted to launch it for everyone.  There are outstanding issues so do not be surprised if something does not work, or does not work as planned.  Hang in there as we are continuing to fix all these "problems."

So, what is new?  Here is a list of what is new with DAv3. It does not contain the countless DAv2 bugs that have been fixed but, rather, just the major points of DAv3 and Napalm.

  • Completely skinnable interface with skins for past designs
    • Version 3 and Version 2 available to everyone
    • Version 1 (Classic) and others available to subscribers
  • Deviations
    • Submission
      • Multiple step process
      • Automatically shows writing submission form for poetry/prose
      • EXIF data is extracted from images taken with digital cameras and displayed (info such as camera model, shutter speed, date taken)
    • Editing
      • Rewritten from scratch
      • Really works now
    • Multiple levels of categories
  • Browsing
    • Browse views, consistent across deviantART: Browsing, Galleries, Searching, etc
    • Larger 150x150 pixel thumbnails for subscribers
    • Mature content filter
    • Separate category and subcategory select boxes, filled by javascript
  • Comments
    • Comment views
      • Nested, shows replies indented below the parent
      • Threaded, shows one level of replies
      • Flat, same as version 2
      • None, for dialup users or users who don't want to see comments
    • Comment ordering
    • Per-page limits
    • Comment rating system
    • Minimum comment rating, so low rated comments are hidden
    • Ability to hide signatures, avatars, and the comment rating select box
  • User pages
    • Added Yahoo! Messenger ID
  • Messages
    • Each section is limited to 25, with a more link for people with many messages
    • Checkboxes beside each message allow you to mark individual messages as read
    • Added journal watch to show new journals by your friends

    • Your friends list is shown below the recipient field when sending a new note, allowing you to quickly send a note to a friend
    • Sent Items can be deleted, without deleting the note from the recipient's Inbox
    • You can see the entire recipient list of a note addressed to multiple users
  • Friends
    • Single list of friends with checkboxes beside each user to add or remove that friend from your deviantList, deviation watch or journal watch
    • Ability to create friend groups which allow you to group your friends so you can address notes to the group, as well as show groups in a tree in the deviantList
  • Forum
    • Nested, so replies show below parent
    • Comment rating system
  • Random deviant and random deviation features
  • Email address confirmation
    • Email addresses must be confirmed before they can be used, reducing abuse
    • Each email address is limited to 3 accounts
  • Settings
    • Geographic coordinates, automatically puts the appropriate tags on your user page and pings GeoURL
    • User configurable time zones which show dates and times on the site in your time
  • Far more backend changes than we can list here, resulting in a faster and less buggy site all around.

:bulletred: :pointr: Features that are still to come:

  • Deviation and Writing browse views
  • Notification
    • Via notes, email or your cellphone
    • A wide variety of events can be configured to send notifications
  • Collections (previously devpacks)
  • The ability to edit your signature

H'mmm... I have a question about the skins of the site...
I read: version 1, 2 and 3 and others in this article. When I go to "settings" and see the drop-down of "Site Skin" it only shows me "Minimal" and "Version 2". Were the other versions suppoosed to apperar there?

i am not really liking the new site. the buttons for "submit" and whatnot won't load on my computer, so i can't do anything. maybe because i use a mac?

I like the look of everything...BUT!!!!!

1. The header being this ugly depressing grey thing, I still can't change.

2. No personal signatures...I feel the need for everyone to have one...that I miss extremely.

3. The fact that we aren't able to view recent dev submissions from our dev. watch folks as thumbnails is terrible..that saved me a lot of time as to whether or not I actually wanted to look and comment

4. With the response, lazy people take advantage of just responding, without taking time to visit your page and look around and thank you personally

5. With all the new options, I feel page coloration should be able to be changed personally...I am getting sick of looking at a grey website.

6. I am missing my emoticon legend on every visible writing space and the option to Preview my entries...

7. There are a lot of things I still don't comprehend.

1,700+ comments... It's a new World Record.

Slaps out the phonebook, searches for Guiness.... Dials number :D :w00t:

Maybe someone already mentioned this, but I don't see it clearly stated for things yet to come. On our userpages there is the recent deviations submissions. I enjoyed seeing how many views downloads etc. the last couple I uploaded had without having to look at them individually. Any news on this still being added.

Besides that little complaint, I love the new DA... much faster, cleaner, and the new features are great. Keep up the great work guys!

what happened to all my ppl on my dev watch? do i really have to go back and re:dev all my dev watch ppl?
sashamya Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2003
dev3's not as buggy anymore. but please, bring back the thumbnails in people's devwatches. i don't think anyone prefers the watch w/o them. it's so much more simple to be able to quickly browse and see what you want to comment on, than having to open every link, to find you only really want to see one or 2 pics.

i've seen several other people mention this, i hope you take it into consideration.
eyeronik Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2003
seems a lot faster, less buggy and generally more optimised, a job well done indeed, seriously enjoying the improved speed and clarity
kohoyin Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2003
drop that ass like its hot.

bug in journal (list of entries goes through table at bottom)
i dont like the new submission system and inbos display (no thumbnails is bad)

otherwise, another great DA layout
potterart Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2003
problem: on my club's page, you can't see the box where you can type in gallery comments at the bottom.

as well, are we going to get our devwatch thumbnails back? same goes for comments - i'd rather just read them all on one page than have to click on each one individually..

Has anyone noticed that the AIM link on ppl userpage doesn't work: "aim:goaim?screenname=UserName& message=deviantART+rocks+your+world+to?& quot; I think goaim, should be changed to goim. So the URL should look like this "aim:goim?screenname=Username&m essage=deviantART+rocks+your+world+to&qu ot;

im a mac user mostly, (i dont have my own computer yet so im stuck having to mostly use the net at work).

I think this site is great, and started using it fully on ur 3rd bday and it worked nicely, cept a lil slow here n there.

But like a day or two later u redid it and now things dont view right, frames are overlapping other frames, portions of text are stretched out so the page goes on and on and on, and there are lots of buttons u cant see on macs, like u cant get to forums etc unless sumone tells u the address. So i was a bit gutted.

im on a pc at the moment and it works beautifully.
Im just a lil peeved again that people dont seem to take care of mac users, when designing for the internet, and this being an ART site, i would have thought macs would have been taken into account more, as theyre used a hell of a lot in this field u know?

Anyway, just my two pennies worth. I do love this site tho, so much to see and do. So i wont let it stop me from visiting. :O)

The Friendslist isn't that perfect now .. (if none have told this) .. i couldn't add some to a friendslist that i already have in it ...
l10nx Featured By Owner Aug 15, 2003
Clean, fast, feature rich. Just wait until the bugs are squashed and everything has been tweaked appropriately. This is the point where a new site is at its worst, when it is subjected to the most criticism, as well as unforseen kinds of use and misuse. And despite this, it is working laudably well. It rocks, and will rock more soon!

It kicks ass!

So many features, so little time. DA version 3 shows a lot of promise.
sixod Featured By Owner Aug 14, 2003
Its very well done,more fast....awesome
xargylexsocksx Featured By Owner Aug 14, 2003
the only good things are the speed and the submission thing.

besides that, i miss the thumbnails of yours friends' pics and the way everything used to be laid out.

but i guess i'm getting used to it...
unnoticed Featured By Owner Aug 14, 2003
I'm mostly happy with the layout...

But the two things that I miss are when I receive notifications about new deviations for people I have DevWatched, there are no thumbnails anymore.

Also, on the deviant main page, where the deviations are listed, there are only the titles of the deviations and not the number of comments/views/favourites.
tioga Featured By Owner Aug 14, 2003
i am sorry but i hate it.. you took out all the good stuff... and its just such crap setup now. Before it was perfect and only speed had to be fixed. But nope they just had to change everything and do it so wrong.

Look how many days have past and i still dont like it or got used to it.
slainheart Featured By Owner Aug 13, 2003
I despise this new browser for DeviantArt...

It's doesnt show it's full potential like before...

It's now hiding in something that's not what it should be hiding

fofr Featured By Owner Aug 13, 2003
Speed/ I mean.... I loaded this page! wow!
sabotage Featured By Owner Aug 13, 2003  Hobbyist Digital Artist
dav3 suck, the new features are not needed and arent contributing at nothing, so many bugs when adding so boring things, the design is complicated, some of the things are harder to find, its harder to get to something.. anyways.. not comfterable, not handy.. new features arent helping.. just bugs :(

long live dev2 :(
dragon-shadow Featured By Owner Aug 13, 2003
I thought it was fine before you changed it, but it looks cool. The only thing that bugs me is that you cant see the number of comments each of your deviations has on your main page, Icons and tumbnails take for ever to load or dont load at all and that when a image is slightly too big it is cut off from the page instead of a scroll bar appearing.

Apart from that the new version is really good, little bugs in it here and there but then it is new. Well done guys!

mechwar Featured By Owner Aug 13, 2003
Ah no it doesnt work for me. I just had deleted the cookies in my computer and when I try to log on to devart, it tells me to enable those password cookies. What should I do. Im looged on and I dont see the new deviantart only the old one.m :-(
bam Featured By Owner Aug 13, 2003
the new "arrangement" of data windows on your DA "homepage" SUCKS! you can't even tell now if there are new comments on any of your recently submitted pieces. I Hate it and would like to see the DA "hompages" at least put back to the way they were before (which made sense).
hawkaloogie Featured By Owner Aug 13, 2003
Will users be able to create new skins for v3? 'cuz i can think of some cool stuff i could do w/ it
spiritguide Featured By Owner Aug 13, 2003
I miss the extensive pop-up information on the thumbnails.
Restoring this previous feature in can actually lessen the load on the server.
Now I have to click on a thumbnail to find out how big it is. This results in
your server having to serve more data than it needs to.
Please consider adding this popup thumbnail information back in to the
system. The information I am interested in is resolution and
the name of the stocker who submitted it.

Or make it part of the skin, (ie a checkbox to turn it on).

omykron Featured By Owner Aug 13, 2003
I don't really like this... I just can't get used with it. The last one was better.
adni18 Featured By Owner Aug 12, 2003  Hobbyist Interface Designer
Great design, very beautiful and more easy to use all those wonderful options, which only DA is giving us! Thank you :)

Though, the sorting in Browse mode doesn't work for the most categories. It is just a helping comment ;)
