I am going to guess a few things about this deviation. First, that it is a direct up and down shot, without any undue angle, and that it (the sign) is stuck into dirt without grass.

I'm probably right about the first, and wrong about the second.

So, onward to the meat of the critique. First, while I like the interesting approach to lighting on the shot (I find it simplistic and original, and thus worthy of commendation), the texture of the sign does not appear to mix well with the lighting, and as such comes out with the appearence of being blurred. This may simply be a visual illusion created by that lighting.

Second, and the last major thing that I can see that detracts from the picture is the appearence of a phantom wood beam in the upper right corner of the picture, between the corner and the center of the shot. This beam seems very out of place due to the focus clearly being on the signpost itself. What it comes down to is the difficulty of issolating the light in that area, when the enviroment is already as dark as it is, if there is anything anywhere near the focus of the shot, it is bound to be illuminated no matter what your intentions are.

All in all, and interesting excersise in lighting, and in the end, a very nice shot. It certainly does bring out a feeling of spookiness and haunting intrigue.

I like the other-worldly feel, especially the contrast between the light and the surrounding darkness. in a way, it's kind of like life at times.

It's so sad to see Summer seasonal stores close... especially b/c I usually am working at one and it means I'm out of a job. :tears:

... Cool pic though ^^

Wow.

This makes me feel so many emotions at once, because I see signs lit up in a similar way when I visit Greece and it brings back so many memories.

I love this shot and I know it doesn't mean the same thing to me as it does to you, but I can still say "Aw naw."

You would never know it was it's last "day" being that it's so dark. But in keeping with the sad mood of the story and that it will be closed till next summer the encompasing blackness only goes to prove that out of the darkness there is light. I would like to have seen some of the word Spa if ever so slightly only so you didn't have to tell me where it was, also the green color of the sign goes well with the reds brought out by the light. Well structured.

Beautiful use of darkness and light. And believe me, darkness and light is something I know! ;)

I also love the surreal feeling that this has. There's just something about it I can't quite put in to words.

All in all, really nice work!

That looks CG'd. It looks unreal with the high contrast created by the single bright light and dark environment.

Nice, I like how the only light is from the one light hanging there. The like that fact that it's some kind of bar or spa or something; it only makes the lighting that more appropriate.

The only critique I have is the framing; although I'm not really certain on that. On the one hand, I like how you have everything centered and surrounded in darkness, but at the same time I don't really like things that are centered in the frame and have nothing going on around it (even if the blackness is pivotal to the photo). The overall feeling of this one is pretty good, but there's just something about the simplicity of it that leaves me wanting more.

Reminds me of a scooby doo mystery shot, they go to the Blue Moon Spa to find out the cleaner is really... "The Blue Moon Ghost!11OMG"

And he would have gotten away with it, if it wasn't for those meddling/pesky kids. :mwahaha:
