Young Justice TV - Kyle Rayner V2 by Jarein Young Justice TV - Kyle Rayner V2 by Jarein
DISCLAIMER: Just to clarify, this is a character design concept I came up with using the style of the Young Justice tv show.

And also keep in mind, this is NOT official concept art. Theres someone at Warner who does an amazing job with character designs for the show (I was told its an entire team of people) so default to them for real official show art.

So yeah I've been playing alot of DCU Online since it went Free-To-Play, and I even splurged on the Fight for the Light DLC so I could make my own Lantern character. Just about as close to fulfilling a dream as you can get these days.

Well playing around with my own Lantern, got me thinking about some of my old Lantern artwork, and I had the itch to try something....unique....with one of them.

I still consider my Young Justice TV show Kyle Rayner fanart to be my most successful, but I always felt like I just didn't push the creative envelope with his design. If theres one thing I learned about the show is that the artists did many things differently with each character's design

I realized after careful consideration that I focused too much on making him just like he was in the comics, when I should have tried something different.

So I looked at who Rayner is in the comics, and tried to figure out what he "could" be like in the show. Hes an artist in the comics, so I feel hed be a fairly liberal, hipster, artisitc type of teenager in the show; kind of a rebellious, art-student.

You'll notice his attire is vastly different, more civilian than anything. Guy Gardner's Lantern uniform opened the door that its not out of the ordinary to see something like that on a lantern. Plus Superboy wears pretty much just civies anyway, so its fully plausible that Kyle would go that route as well since artistic types avoid conforming to standards.

Certain aspects of his attire was inspired by alot of video game characters, mainly Nathan Drake of Uncharted, and Cole McGrath of inFAMOUS. I just picked and chose what I thought would work, and just kinda went from there.

So what does everyone think?

Do you know anyone or would you be willing to draw a quick sketch of my Lantern character? She's a Blue Lantern. ^^

This looks amazing btw, I just wasn't sure who to ask.

Awwweeeessoooommmme! You should draw Connor Hawke I'd love to see how you'd depict him. Connor and Kyle have always been two characters I adore. Btw I might write a YJ fanfic with Kyle in it, would you be offended if I used a oink to this pic of how he looks in the fic?

Kick ass...leaving it looking a lil like the classic green lantern and adding a anime twist to it...nice

Wow. This is great. I really like your depiction of Kyle Rayner. I think my favorite part of this piece is the fact that you gave him green goggles instead of a mask. It really fits in with your hipster/artist theme. Plus those goggles just look plain cool. (Not to mention the fact that his mask in the comics looks really dumb). My only criticism is about the GL logo on his pants. It's really hard to tell it's the emblem. Personally I think it should be somewhere else on his body (not particularly on his chest but somewhere where it is easier to make out what it is). But anyways great job man

Thi is really well done but I am unable to stop laughing at hipster Kyle.

Hahah it really is kinda tongue-in-cheek isnt it? I always found comics to have that effect in some ways :D

Amazing job, I rather like the "civies" look, though I tend to prefer Lanterns to look like they are in some sort of uniform I think the colors and design go quite well for this look.

Thanks man, as always :D Yeah it was a tough choice, but I figure I'd go the road less travelled since I havent seen many lantern designs online in this kind of way. But I'm very happy you liked how it turned out. Once again Thank you for the positive critique!

sweet as always ^^ like CoolestNinja1242 said, the symbol on his pants is awesome :D i also like the face, and... well.. everything in fact ^^you did an awesome job just as usual^^

you are on dcuo? what level? how is it to play a lantern? i started it too since it's free, and when my connexion doesnt fail me, its pretty fun ^^ i thought of buying the lantern dlc, but not sure it worth.

Thank you :D I appreciate the constructive and positive feedback on this. Its very tough to understand if I'm taking something in a good directions, so this kind of critique helps me alot.

As for DCU Online, I HIGHLY recommend the DLC if you really want to be a Lantern. Honestly, if you get the correct combos down correct, you can unleash alot of damage and maintain insane juggling on multiple targets if you choose a a pure DPS build.

I play a Support Build so I can fill a Controller slot and its WAAAY better than going with Gadget or Mental Controllers. You can encase enemies in bubbles for crowd control for an insane amount of time, stun like a beast, and always keep everyone alive with shields and Energy Recharges. If you do go Lantern, definitely pick flight and hand blasts. Not only is it appropriate for lore, but its the best weapon/travel combo as a Lantern.

I hope that helps in your decision. You wont regret it if you really enjoy DCUO. Thanks again!

you are welcome ^^ i like your designs because they are different from what i generally see, for exemple, for the lantern, you can find tons of redesign of the costume or character, but yours is unique ^^ you do a great job ^^

how temptating, i might buy it for chrismas ^^ i would definitly go for flight, but i didn't really know what weapon to get ^^ thanks a lot for your advices ^^ the gameplay looks interesting and if i get the money i will probably go for it ^^ now i just need to find a good design for my character :D

Heh, his face kind reminds me of superboy.

I do like that the green lantern is on his pants, rather than his shirt I think it gives him more individuality
