Young Justice TV - Kyle Rayner by Jarein Young Justice TV - Kyle Rayner by Jarein
DISCLAIMER: Just to clarify, this is a character design concept I came up with using the style of the Young Justice tv show.

And also keep in mind, this is NOT official concept art. Theres someone at Warner who does an amazing job with character designs for the show (I was told its an entire team of people) so default to them for real official show art.

This is just me puttering around with ideas. This work isnt intended for real use and is, again me just messing around

Unlike my first Green Lantern concept, this one is NOT using my own style of art. Instead I used the same style used in the Young Justice tv show to make a fully realized teenage version of Kyle Rayner that would fit in the show's universe continuity.

I said it once before, those kids could use a kid Lantern to fill out the roster :D

The design of his uniform is was heavily influenced by the first one he used in the comics (the coolest one IMO), with a few aspects of some of his newer ones. I also used the same kind of design philosophy of the other character's costumes- seams and padded elements, along with a few spots of exegerrated scale.

This was an incredibly difficult process, since I had to essentially toss out my own art style and follow another - one that is far simpler in detail than I'm used to. But overall, I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Whats everyone think?

I would love to see Kyle as a member of Young Justice on the cartoon. I've been saying that since day one of the show.

Nice work on his costume, and I like the fact you chose the (first) "Post-Ion" version of the emblem (I know the look is more tired to the artist but I never remembered his name). I always liked that costume and take on the GL logo the most.

I've not watched YJ yet but from what I've read Superman is a bit of a douche towards Conner which frustrates me. I admire Superman for various reasons including his ability to care, show compassion and father-like attitude towards people like Kara and Chris (see Last Son; great story IMO). Having him keep his distance from Conner is the opposite of what I want when I see the two together (their team-up in the Blackest Night tie-ins were brilliant IMO).

yeah Superman is very much a "dead-beat dad" kinda guy on the show towards his genetically replicated progeny. I can understand that the show is trying to put more realism into his reaction to Conner's existence in this version of Earth, but theres definate "out-of-character" behavior coming from the man of steel.

youre right, Superman is the poster child for doing the right thing in other continuities, but here he doesnt quite measure up that standard. but then again, I give the show credit doing something different with him. plus its too early in the series to really garner a full personality profile just yet.

thanks again for stopping by and giving me some positive comments regarding my design. yeah the post-Ion emblem was definately the coolest :D

See this is what I hate with the way some people portray Superman. For me Superman is an embodiment of pure heroism, self sacrifice and just generally being someone to look up to. It's also what's put me off Batman, due to the way some people "derail" Superman and other heroes to make him more awesome by comparison (though I've not read it, I've seen a video review of "Act of God" which turns all bar Batman into whiney, out of character people just to make Batman more awesome by comparison because he has no powers. Sorry but I dislike something when you try to force me to like it, especially if you insult something I do like).

And I agree; I felt it was disappointing Kyle didn't done it again after he was freed from Parallax.

I love this design, you did a really good job on it :) and I agree a kid Lantern on YJ would be awesome. As Hal's sidekick though, not John Stewart's... I want Warhawk to be John & Hawkgirl's sidekick [link] LOL =p but would love to see Kyle on the show, I think he'd make a great addition to the team... though they need more girls LOL

Thanks! yeah my idea regarding the setting is that Rayner is a Lantern-in-training and Hal's his assigned captain to guide him, where it then leads to him joining up for the "team-building" experience any Lantern should have.

If they brought in Wonder Girl....Donna Troy or Cassie Sandmark? Your answer?!

A young 16. A bit older than Wally but younger than Kaldur.

Glad you liked it

yeah it was pretty tough to simulate the shows style. I had to pay close attention to the kind of stylized forms the show uses by checking out all the official concept art that Jerome Moore and Philly B did.

thanks a bunch!

That, is _adorable_. Maybe it's just that I so love the clean, sleek style of that show, but it really WORKS on Kyle Rayner. Although...I dunno about giving powers that heavy-duty to a teenager. They've _done_ it, in the comics, but it still seems a bad idea. Somebody full of hormones + ring that does _anything_? YIKES.

(Although, actually I've also thought they should add a "Kid Lantern" to the roster (I realise fully that a LOT of people have thought that. A LOT a lot)...only my choice was Arisia. Why? Because if they did it at the right time, she might get a crush on a boy her OWN age who is brave and has superpowers and muscles, and that...incident...with Hal might not happen on Earth 16. :P)

Anyway, the design is cool and looks very like a proper (modern) Green Lantern uniform and also the style of the show. Awesome. :)

that would be a good idea to have Arisia to fill the Lantern slot on the team instead. Helps even out the male/female ratio some more hehe. plus alien elf chicks are never a bad thing :p

if they do bring her in, yeah they better not go and duplicate the same circumstances in the comic continuity. I mean...yikes. Hal's a cop, he doesnt need to have alien jailbait stalkers on Earth 16 too lol.

thanks again for stopping by and giving some positive feedback.

Yeah, I thought of that (with the boy/girl ratio). Also, she'd give M'gann another alien to talk to.

The show...wouldn't actually have THAT happen...I don't think. (Although it is a smidge darker and more adult/sexy than I'd expect, for a kids' show.) Up to this point, Hal has shown up in the background exactly _once_ and has had zero lines, so it's not likely he'll interact much with the YJ team at all, at least for a while.

But mainly I was semi-joking, mixing the two universes together. "Hey, I know--they need a Green Lantern and another girl, and here's one from this _other_ universe who could benefit from hanging out around male superheroes her own age! Let's team them up!" :P
All that ASIDE, Arisia would probably look cool in the Young Justice _style_. They'd most likely use (a slightly modified version of) her outfit from the newer animated GL movies, which would be fine by me. They'd probably like, make it in some kind of textured, tougher material or something, but otherwise close to that. I think.

haha. yeah I used a combination of KF and Robin's pose in the concept art for the show as a scaling reference to get proportions right - so no doubt it would come out pretty familiar :D.

in retrospect I should have varied the pose to be different from those shots, but part of me thought leaving it intact kinda made it seem more legit. good eye man

you should pitch this to the studio and get some money... $$$$$ lol.

but if Kyle would be a GL in the show, wouldn't that mean Hal should be Parallax first and go nuts and go against EVERYONE?

naw. this is just some fanboy releasing some of his clogged imagination in an Illustrator file lol. it would be cool to know something I did for fun made it to a tv screen in some minor way.

as for the parallax thing, they dont necessarily need that to prompt Rayner's introduction since the version of Earth on the show is an alternate universe, contrary to the one in the comics. so on the show they can skip over Hal's possession by Parallax entirely if they want.

No problem! I know right? That would be pretty cool! Although the show is still amazing either way. And I think the point was to keep it as it's own team, not really a mini league.
