Protoman Design Concept by Jarein Protoman Design Concept by Jarein
Harkening back to more of my childhood favs, I can't remember a single moment of elementary school when I was glued to my NES playing the Megaman games.

Hell I used to remember having big discussions on the buses about the most effective kill order for the Robot masters in 2 and 3.

Protoman was always my favorite, even moreso than Megaman. Lone wolf, cool dialogue, best 8-bit theme ever. Whats not to love.

Well with the advent of the character Zero, Protoman's archtype was pretty much filled for the rest of the continuing series in Megaman X. They did bring him back sorta in Battle Network, but that version was more just a fusion of Protoman and Zero than a true sucessor to the title.

So I decided to make a real, modern day version of Protoman that I believe best embodied his character.

First, his proto-shield. When Protoman.Exe didnt have one, I was pissed. So its back baby. Same with the scarf. Ditched the long white hair look from BN.

Next, the overall design. I gathered alot of inspiration from Zero's look in the Megaman Zero series. I hated the adrogeny, so I took care to use elements of the look, and not a direct translation. I then began building my own suit design from there.

I decided to use the Protoman.exe symbol just because I felt it helped with the design identity.

Meh. The design itself is great as usual, but the colors don't quite work for me.

Borrows a little too much from Zero with the helmet design, but still pretty good dude

Well... he does have a shield in the games. He just only uses it while you're shooting at him! It's so frustrating because I can never hit him! >:C

But overall I like this design much, much better! He looks way cooler! I'm not sure I like Zero's Z helmet on him but it's such an improvement over his canon look. I still don't get why he has silver hair.

I kinda have a theory behind the whole design of Protoman.exe when he was used in the first Battle Network games. Capcom had been gaining a marked success out of their Devil May Cry franchise at the time and my guess is they thought making the BN version of Protoman into a G-rated Dante knockoff would help sell the character. I'll admit, he looks cool, but he is definately NOT the real spiritual successor to the original Protoman. If anything, the fact he has a user who uses him as a navi was a massive mistep.

Protoman is a free spirit, a force of nature. Hes a maverick character who, although does the right thing, rarely allows himself to fall under the command of anyone. The fact he has some snot nosed brat with a remote telling him how to fight is just wrong (playing as him in a MM 10 doesnt count :p) So yeah, thats my take on that.

Wow I really rambled lol. Yo thanks again for stopping by and giving some honest and positive feedback. If anything, I think I'll be making some touchups on the helmet's design to clean up the overall look. So stay tuned! Take care :D

I did not know that about Devil May Cry at the time, it certainly would explain things. It seems a bit unfair that Zero not only had no net-op but was so drastically different that he was all out a virus instead of a navi at all (from what I remember, I never got that far in the anime so I only have summaries to go off of) even though Zero always has been very much a team player in the series. Well, not quite always, he started off as a helper like Protoman but as the X series progressed he became more and more of a team player, and yet in the EXE series he's reverted back to the bad guy? It's not fair at all and Protoman deserves better.

Heh, it is a bit hypocritical of me to dislike the helmet when I used Z era elements in my own navis, perhaps it's because of how uniquely "Zero" they look to me. But as I said: infinitely more awesome than his canon appearance.

Zero.exe was origianlly nothing more than a virus created by Wiley to infect Net Navis and drive them berzerk. Constant exposure to Net Navis altered the Zero virus into a true Net Navi. Most of this story was explained in the Gamecube game. I have never watched the TV show so I am not sure how it matches up with the games.

This is a great re-imagining of Protoman. I can easily see him fitting in alongside his little brother X in the year 21XX.
