Captain Marvel Modern Concept by Jarein Captain Marvel Modern Concept by Jarein
Got hooked into watching the DC showcase animated shorts on the Batman/Superman Apocalypse DVD.

Captain Marvel rocks. Hes always rocked. He been around since Roosevelt, and the story revolving around a well mannered kid given godlike powers still holds a special place in comics today.

So I figured, why not breathe some new life into his iconic garb by updating it to a more modern standard.

Some of my first sketches had him wearing a sort of Roman type of outfit, with a styled type of toga and parts of historically accurate Roman armor. I went in that direction since his powers are derivved from the Greek/Roman pantheon of gods - I felt it appropriate.

I liked the idea, but it was far to complex and bulky to be considered a true superhero costume, so I began the process of subtracting and reducing the design into more symbolic accents.

You can see some aspects of the toga idea in the upper body, with the diagonal cutoff of the bright red. I made sure the costume remained snug as well, but gave certain areas just a bit of raised relief for more interesting subtle detail.

The shin armor from the Roman armor I had on originally was just about axed completely, leaving just a more iconic cross strap/ knee joint detail.

The mantle was left fairly intact from my first sketch. I liked how it was form fitting on the shoulders, but had the loose half-cape along the left armor, just like the classic costume.

The bolt of lighting that pretty much defines Captain Marvel was a tough call. I opted to warp the icon to flow with the rest of the diagonal aspects of the upper boddy red area.

As for the face and body shape. In this day and age, bulky muscle-man physical builds have kinda been tossed to the wayside, in favor of a more lean yet ripped look. Since Billy Batson is a teenager by his mortal standard, I didnt see the need to make his Captain Marvel form that much older.

This was a tough design, considering all of the sketches and redos I went through before I settled on this design. But ultimately I think I did the character proud, bringing his look into the 21st century with style.

"The Shazam has just hit the fan."

What do you all think?

If only they used this as his main costume for Injustice.

Another wasted opportunity.

Omg that would be brilliant!

I know, right? It also has that subtle combination of Modern and Greek that he draws his power from.

Captain Marvel or now Shazam! has always had the much cooler costume than Superman. (Look ma, no underwear!) That and the golden armbands, sash and gold trimmings on the cape have always made the character unique and stand out and gives this rather elegant and majestic vibe.

And in case it isn't clear, he's my all time and current DCU character fave. (Even if he was created by Fawcett)

Looks more like Freddy Freeman's costume than Billy but if ever DC or WB wouls go for an alternative and modern look for Billy, this would definitely do.

What do you think of Gary Frank's New 52 Shazam! design?

While I do like his costume, it doesn't have a modern feel to it. My first thought was that he looks like a Colonial age Ship Captain, you know, minus the ridiculous powdered wig. *shudders*

I can't help thinking: "Time Lord General" when I see this...

Well done, but he looks more like a villainous snob than a sacred child sort of superhero.

People still think that Captain Marvel rocks huh... we need more people like you.
Personally, it reminds me of how soldiers dressed from the Revolutionary War, but it's really cool

Meh. It's a great design, but I think it would work better for a member of the Marvel family than for the Big Red Cheese himself. For me, the appeal of Captain Marvel has always been how Silver Age he was, and how he kept that boyish idealism even in the modern era. Even in a world where sleek supers are the norm, I still think the Mightiest Mortal would keep his Heroic Build(tm), just to hearken back to the age of talking tigers.

However, no opinion is set in stone, and this design is good enough to make a believer out of me. I love all the subtle detail and thought that went into it. Do you design professionally? You certainly could.

One of my biggest problems with Captain Marvel has always been the fact that he looks like a Superman clone. You have done an excellent job of giving him his own iconic style, and I salute you for it.
Arcanity Featured By Owner Aug 31, 2012
You do know DC sued the company that originally created him for being a superman ripoff

I did not. Not surprised though.

I hear you. its a character that at one point was MORE popular than Superman and yet its hard to find any modern attempts to update him. thanks for the positive feedback :D

Actually the more I look at this costume the more it grows on me. This is pretty cool, I like the royal look of the costume, the lean body shape, and the cape and shoulders. Great job.
Jarein Featured By Owner Aug 4, 2011
yeah, sorta something different from my normal ideas. I appreciate that you caught the themes of the ideas surrounding the design. "royal" and "regal" were some of the words I used when I was sketching bits of it on paper.

Thanks again for stopping by!
