There was a man who wasn’t there
His wings were made of fire
His face such porcelain perfection
With eyes of love and ire
He pulled away my backbone and threw it to the watchers
Pale and scurrying with laughter, they chirped and cheered
As bone burned gold and disappeared
Then he pulled another girl from me
She was dead and full of worms
And as she fell away I could see
Flowers blossoming in turn
And butterflies, to my surprise,
Arose from her sad mouth and eyes
Returning her to sunlit skies
Innocent and free
