Koi by janey-jane Koi by janey-jane
This weekend a couple of my best friends and I sat down and went through each others sketchbooks. We marked things that should be posted or finished and posted - this is one of mine.

Watercolor sketch on sketchbook paper (see, LAZY art habits). This has all the components of my usual sketchbook work: pretty female, lots of hair, facing left.

Never in my life have I been so lost into a piece of art, I am horrible at drawing eyes but I havn't drawn in a while, anyhow the colors... they speak to me haha, anyways this is seriously amazing! Redness just captivates me so intently. Great piece!

I usually do very muted colors, but sometimes I want to use incredibly saturated colors instead

This is lovely! I too often cover my notebooks with faces pointing left. I like the previous comments relating this piece to Ponyo.

It's so vibrant! Maybe it's just me, but the sight of such vivid colors literally makes my mouth water a little. I feel weird for admitting that.

lovely!

have you read the 'rk' fan fiction 'the slumbering city' [link] by indygodusk? there is much 'koi' symbolism used in that story.

you're quite welcome love. i have been scouring the 'rk' archives at ffn for quite some time, i'm not quite finished reading them all but i'm familiar with many of them. in future if you need to know a story tell me about it, if i don't already know of it i'll help you find it. =)

I have to admit, that my fav RK story is Grocery Store, its so AU and fluffy and silly, but I can't help but love it. There was also one I remember finding very funny where Megumi shows Kaoru some shunga prints to try and teach her about the birds and the bees and Kaoru subsequently freaks out. Cute.

yes, 'grocery store' is a good one.

you mean 'the bridal discussion' by riikitikitavi? i had it bookmarked and clicked it to copy the url and author for you, and it's no longer there. i looked for it at ff.n, mm.n, haikubaiku, meiji tales and even used the 'wayback machine' to check out guilty pleasures and looked in the akabeko-- it's gone. it's a shame too, it was a really great piece. it's only been recently too...

i have quite a few favorites:

[link] 'blades of blood'
[link] 'witchy woman'
[link] 'shadows in starlight' by vathara
[link] 'in these final hours' by zeh wulf
[link] 'an unexpected lesson' by conspirator
[link] 'kenshin tries to knock of kaoru' by evilchibis
[link] 'swordsmen' by l.mouse
[link] 'caged' by the wandering pen
authors:
[link] ravyn
[link] dragonsdaughter
[link] veles

there are so many more, and i'm not finished with combing the archives...

oh my god I love you. The internet is an amazing, wonderful place. I'll be sure to thank :iconjade-lightning-wolf: as well.

I just re-read it and was so happy, its such a funny, sweet little story. And this experience has made me go and find some of my fave stories that are older (i have some Labyrinth fic that I first read like 10 years ago) - and I've started saving them to my computer.

Thank you thank you thank you!!!

Wow, I like how deep you made the watercolors; I thought you painted it with acrylic or something! :D

I really like the scales and her hair. I normally despite warm, saturated pinks, but you made it look nice. :)

yeah, I basically used my watercolors like acrylics (or like gouache) - i diluted them just enough so that they were liquid, but were still very thick.

Her expression is nicely done; wistful, distant, sad.

I like the pun! (was it meant to be one? She looks very coy to me). And of course the way her scales seem to glow like embers. It's very beautiful. And the composition is striking--it flows like water, but also like flames, or molten metal--I love it.

oh man, I wish I could claim to be clever enough to have thought of that, but I admit I did not. Maybe I'll claim that I was subconsciously thinking it?

Thanks so much for the lovely compliments!

Always take credit for anything others attribute to your cleverness ;). Subconsciously works, as well. I didn't realize it was watercolor; that's so impressive! You have great control. And you deserve every compliment.

I like her simple, contemplative expression, and the focus on shades of red/orange. The image as a whole makes me think of Ponyo--the woman could be the goddess, or an adult Ponyo (except, of course, that she's a koi and not a goldfish) :)
