It's been a long time since I've published a simple graphite drawing, hasn't it (: Anyhow, I've prepared a 5 new graphite pieces for my Saturday's exhibition, this is a closeup of the first one.

Beautiful drawing and shading! Some of the features seem a little more graphic than necessary, but overall a great composition. I especially like the contrast of shaded and unshaded elements. I also like the diagonal hatching in the background, it adds a level of movement to the piece.

Sorry, I didn't have time to write the minimum words so I had to copy and paste a repeat.

There is life amid the shadows.

Your talent for capturing faces and expression is in full effect here. The mix of tonal drawing and stylistic line drawing in this is very eye-catching. I enjoyed how you made the stylistic grasses feel substantial by adding their shadows falling across the model's body. Also the diagonal slanting texure in the shadows provides a more dynamic feel to the static and serene pose. As with the painted version of this composition, the positive and negative spaces are varied and interesting to view.

The biggest critique I have with this is more of a personal preference and is not with the drawing but with the presentation. I want to see more of this drawing, and I always prefer to view the art at 90 degrees from the picture plane (unless it has 3D elements such as impasto which may show up better from a different angle.) I'm not entirely sure how this 'close up' version serves the art, as it does not seem to be all that close up, instead merely a different viewing angle.

As always, I look forward to each new piece of yours. Thank you for letting me comment on your art; I hope it's been helpful in some way. <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/t/t…" width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Thumbs Up"/><img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" title=":) (Smile)"/>

Thank you for your critique, I enjoyed reading it very much.

To reply to your "closeup concern", I have two reasons to upload this type of deviation - first, I want to keep the full version of the drawing a surprise for my upcoming exhibition and I don't want to publish it online until people see it live. However, publishing a closeup provides a little preview of what kind of new works they can be expecting. Second reason is bound with my hobby to photograph paintings and drawings from different angles, which results in a completely new and different kind of artwork. Photography such as this allows to observe textures of the paper used, paint or the graphite film and provides more insight into the technique. Personally, closeups (macro shots) of paintings of other professionals helped me very much when learning traditional techniques.

I hope I have managed to reply properly, thank you again (:

Good points; I can understand the exhibition issue, especially. Thanks for providing these previews to those of us who are unable to attend, and good luck with your show!:)

Haven't done any serious pencil artwork since ages. Totally miss this, but don't have the time or patience for it atm.
Anyway... this looks great! Love the shading and highlights :aww:
