Watercolor Emico: Black and Washed Black

So.. almost a year after I've started working on this skin the 1st style is finally done. This version contains the Black substyles with a "Modern" and a "Classic" taskbar.
This skin is based on the skin called "Watercolor". It's a skin that was being used in the beta's of XP.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This version contains a Black and a Washed Black version. Washed Black is less dark as you can see in the preview. It also has green sliders and progressbars instead of the blue ones in Black.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

How to install:

Extract the folder called "WE Black" to "C:WINDOWSResourcesThemes".
Right click the desktop > properties > appearance > then from the first drop select "Watercolor Emico: Black"
From the 2nd drop downlist you can make a choice between the "Black Modern", "Black Classic", "Washed Black Modern" and the "Washed Black Classic" substyle.
In the 3rd drop downlist you can make a choice between a "Normal" or a "Compact" start panel.

To use this theme you need to patch the Windows system file uxtheme.dll. You can read about how to do that here: [link]

"bugs" I know of:
* Some palet frames arent drawn the correct way. (Now idea how to fix this yet)
* In some webbrowsers the buttons might be resized the wrong way. (Browser bug)
* Multi row taskbar does not look good in the Modern substyle. (Theme)

Modification:
For personal use only.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bug fixes and updates:

21-06-08:
- Changed the toolbar buttons and the placebar buttons from orange to blue
- Fixed the top taskbar

16-04-09:
- Added the shellstyle

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wallpaper used in the preview is Earth View

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Contribution:

If you feel like contributing to this skin with application skins then go ahead and make them. All you have to do is ask me for permission by email with a screenshot.
My email address is: makeshift.grey@gmail.com.

For more info about further progress, application skins etc. read the journal that I've made on deviantART: Watercolor Emico: Further progress and info

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Credits:

Credits go out to all the beta testers.
Credits also go out to tornado5 aka em3.
Thanks to Des and Scirwode for helping me out with the shellstyles.
Thanks to euphoricallydead for notifying me about some bugs after the first release.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please give me some feedback about the skin.

Looking superb! Is it possible to adapt it to WindowBlinds by any chance?

It's possible to convert visual styles to WindowBlinds, but it does need some work afterwards. It was meant to be just a visual style for Windows XP though , so I'm going to leave it up to others to make a possible WindowBlinds port. Such ports do need my credits though.

Thanks for reply! If I only knew how to do that... Pity no one done that yet, I miss Emico series on Win7/8 a lot, can't look at other styles after this one! Big respect!

Still using this theme on a couple XP boxes and VMs in 2016, hoorah!
been using it since late 2009 and have come to enjoy it significantly over any other theme or color of WE to the point that everything else just looks wrong.
I... may have also turned on visual styles and patched a couple server 2003 boxes with this back in the day. but only because it's easier on the eyes than the normal Classic theme. I'll also say it works well on XP 64-bit, FLP, and POSready 2009.

Protip for anyone out there: this looks glorious on screens under 13 inches. on the 1280x768 panel of a Fujitsu Lifebook P series, it's crisp, no-frills and easy on the eyes. there's some issues with some dialog boxes and some stuff in IE, but you shouldn't be using IE on XP anymore ever, so it's nothing to worry about.
(you'll also want to do the POSready reghack if you're one of those luddites out there still using XP in this half of the 2010s to continue getting updates.)

I made a good windows 7 port of the style for my personnal use.
If Gelosea is agree, maybe I could distribute it for people like me that can't work without this nice theme !

You can see by yourself :

Here is my port for windows 7
dev.claudedeschenes.com/Themes…

with disabled Aero feature, the theme is really similar to the xp version

Because I'm using classic shell, I didn't waste time to port and optimise the start menu (so I'm not sure it look like really great)

Miss this theme so much. I used to use it all of the time when I had a XP but I was an early adopter of Windows 7 and have been using that OS - wish someone could possibly port this to Windows 7 unless you were able to recreate it (I'm no good at that kind of thing, myself).

I personally intended this visual style to be XP only. But I've given people permission to port it to Windows 7 and release it if they want to. It won't be done by me, that's for sure.

Hi! Great theme!
I think I discovered a strange bug: IE8 is unable to display HTML buttons with "font type: Verdana" and "font size: x-small".
Example: [link]
The red rectangle is the typical "Browse" button.

I'm sorry but I'm not running Windows XP anymore so therefore I won't be able to fix this bug.

Though I'm wondering if this is on an actual webpage or on a Windows frame. If it's on a webpage, then I wouldn't be able to fix it at all.

GREAT JOB! Yes! i'm one more guy that think that this is one of mostly beautyful styles for XP. You take the msstyles to the next level.

I want to ask you something.
I'm building MY personal unattented cd of XP. And realy i'm not a good graphic designer... ...let's say that i TWEAK resources. (My logon called "XPEVEN" can explain that i try to say a lite bit more).
Well, in the proyect i stopped in the part of themes (...msstyles). And when i IMPORT your WATERCOLOR EMICO BLACK style in SkinStudio, the program put me a dialog telling me that your theme looks like hasn't be make it whit this program.
SO, the point is that i come to ask you which is the program that you used to make (or build) your WATERCOLOR EMICO BLACK msstyle.
Is SkinStudio the only program to make msstyles?

There another way to make msstyles, using a reshacker program like Restorator2007, but it's a much more complicated for me 'couse i have to edit the xml seccions (UIFILEs) if the graphic that i want to replace has diferent dimentions than the original.

Well. I hope you can understund me couse i speak spanish. My apologies for my bad english. THANKS FOR READING

Thanks a lot for the kind words!

I've used both SkinStudio and Resedit to compile this theme. I've used both apps throughout compiling the theme. The last bit of editing before releasing the theme was done with Resedit which is why you're getting that message. I'm not sure what happens when you edit the theme with Skinstudio at the point where you are now.

Resedit is somewhat the same as Restorator2007 but primarily for Visual Styles (MSStyles). So yeah, you're better off using Resedit :P

And your English was fine :)

Hey, thanks for reply! ;-)

Well, SkinStudio just message me, couse after that i "acept" the dialog, the program load the imported style. I just ask you becouse maybe there is another program to do things about a theme (msstyle) that i could try it.

(If i don't abuse, let me explain what i try to do. Maybe, just maybe is more simple that i beleave. I try to modify the CAPTION BUTTONS. I like to much the caption buttons of the AERO style, like WMP 11, and like Live messenger too. These buttons are alligned to the top of the titlebar. And realy i don't have any idea to make it. I had ripped the buttons that a like, and i had imported too. But i don't where is what i have to touch to align the caption buttons about the titlebar)

(Another thing that come to my mind is if is realy necessary RESEDIT a msstyle and WHY? In the folder of the imported theme are xml files and ini files that has the same options that skinstudio give me to modify, did i have to edit in the tree parts or just un skinstudio? or maybe a better cuestion, Do you remmember what is the situation in where you needed to resedit a msstyle than just skinstudio it?)

I had to use Resedit to edit the MSStyle itself without opening the skin in Skinstudio again. Skinstudio would break things which I had done in Resedit. Also, you'll need to play with the margins for the caption buttons. I can't do this myself since I don't have the apps installed anymore.

I absolutely agree with what SudosFTW said. Seriously, this is the best skin that ever has been created for Windows XP. For me, no other skin even comes close, it's that perfect. I actually don't know what I'm going to do since I'll soon switch over to Windows 7. Just spent two hours looking for a decent Visual Style for Windows 7, but just can't seem to find one that is as perfect as this one here. They are either too shiny and rounded or pretty much the opposite, too simple, with tiny icons and stuff. Your skin just found the perfect balance between being minimalistic yet still looking modern.

Haha, thanks a lot for the kind comment! I didn't see a reason to make a visual style for Windows 7 myself as I found that they pretty much nailed it with Windows 7's version of Aero. Though they butchered Aero again with Windows 8, at least in the developer preview. Since I'm a GUI addict and can't stand bad GUI designs, Windows 8 will probably force me to create my own visual style again. Not that I'm complaining about that :P

ArcaneWorlds is right (except that ambient is an equal theme for xp/vista). I´m also very dissatisfied with the themes for Win7, but have no time to make my own. They often overuse transparency or are simply show-off-minimalistic-smartass-designs that just hurts your eyes in everyday use.

There are not much with small, clear details and bright colors. And no one with the level of detail we all love on this one.

I have a mockup of my own version of Windows 7 in my projects folder. Though I never got far enough to make it into a usable visual style. Too bad the Aero of Windows 7 was good enough for me. Otherwise I'd still be making my own themes and perhaps even a proper successor to "Watercolor Emico: Black" and "Novus".

Thanks for the kind reply though :) Who knows, maybe I will go back to theming Windows 7. I'm not too keen on Windows 8 and as it looks now, I might be skipping it.

Ok. I never had the time to learn the making of themes. Is there a way without time consuming twiddle in XML files? Some smart GUI based software?

I already tried quick´n´dirty to simply convert the .msstyle with Windows Style Builder. The result was not bad but needs work.

Can you provide the already made mockup?

Importing it into WSB breaks actually the theme because it doesn't import the custom XML files. I learned the apps through modding existing themes to my liking and then I just decided to make my own theme through trial and error.

The tools I used when I made Windows XP themes where Photoshop, StyleBuilder XP, Resedit and Notepad.

I believe I do have some mockups that I'd share. The mockups for the released themes won't be shared though.
