Actually I clicked "unfair", as I feel this critique is a bit less technically advanced. For one, "up to date" by adding drop shadows?? Uhh, the drop shadows have been used way before our time so it's not a matter of "up to date", it's a matter of "visually appealing in a way that they're floating". It does look a little bit like frost in a couple areas (most notably on the heart), but as a whole, I don't see "frost", or it would've been all over the image in a more legitimate "frost" pattern. Also, frost is not really a style for the message here, it's not a Christmas message or anything having to do with winter, so the snow idea is a goner.

I think the fonts are fine, but in my opinion, since the red lettering is the stress point, I'd have added the grunge to the green ones instead of the red, to make the red ones stand out more. I like that you can barely see the added green ones larger and floating around, but I'd have done that to the red ones instead, again since the red message is the stress points. I agree with hazelnutx that drop shadows are overused and gets boring.

I disagree with the heart location critique, it would've been less appealing if it were on top, and I had no idea about the "more weight then the text" rule in hierarchy that hazelnutx mentioned.

Overall I do like the message and the image :)

I agree with the artist, and agree with what you said as well.

There is one very important thing that's missing at the beginning though. And this is a big lesson I've learned... the very hard way... is that the artist should ask for a critique first. If the artist didn't ask, then the critique shouldn't be offered. I highly support the artist to seek honest opinion, and I strongly support the critic giving critiques properly (praise where praise is due, opinion/critique the parts that need fixed, and then ways to make it look better).

I've been on all 4 sides here. Firstly I took offense when someone said certain areas really looked bad (in a bad way) and they didn't offer any help to fix it. Secondly, I gave critiques (properly) and helpful hints and was chewed up for it many times. Thirdly when asked for critiques, I always take it and either I agree or disagree but thank them kindly for the help, and have accomplished many, many things 'cause of them, and forth, after learning my lesson, I give out critiques to those who sought them and have seen quite a few people learn from them, and then some disagreed (but all thanked me).

So basically, first and foremost, a critique should be asked. If it's not asked and you don't like their art, move on to the next :) Praise should be given only where praise is due, otherwise no one learns.

I disagree with you wholly, Nolo. Your so called "critique" seems to be saying you don't support artists helping each other grow, or artists asking for critiques or reaching out for help. If no one received critiques, then we wouldn't see many good artists around here (including me). Here's my original comment for this image...

"LMAO I love this, I really do :) You pointed out exactly bad apples do when they either critique or receive critiques, and of course at the bottom is what should be taking place where the one receiving the critique should know that the person critiquing is only helping you see what they see... and the person doing the critique should know that the person they're helping will either agree or disagree and allow them to not receive it and just move on.

I've been through this on the critique's side and have ran into both those bad apples (where they get offended) or good apples (where they either kindly disagree but thank you or kindly agree and thank you), and it sucks running into bad apples so I make sure anyone wants help/critique before I start waving my tongue around LOL. And then of course growing into my art, I take critiques all the time, I don't always agree but I'm very thankful for their insights.

Honesty... I love honesty way more then just "pat your back and go on to the next". You learn a lot more when honest opinion is given then just praise. Praise is due when you truly do appeal the person with your art, not 'cause you demand it.
"

No one should be a slave and say "I like your art" when it's ugly to them, and again if no critique was asked and you don't like the art, go on to the next. That's what I do.
