Stamp: Perfectionism by Jammerlee Stamp: Perfectionism by Jammerlee
"Perfect" is a subjective concept and doesn't truly exist. I know this. I understand this.

...

Yet I will still drive myself to the brink of madness constantly nitpicking at myself and my work, berating myself in spite of encouragement, and never finding satisfaction in my own abilities.

My bar is set impossibly high, and no matter how close I get, it's always just out of my reach. There's always room for improvement, something I did wrong, something I could have done better, something I can fix. Getting close is never enough. Getting close is unacceptable.

I am a perfectionist. I strive for the impossible.

Something I struggle with every single day of my life.

People think that if you're a perfectionist then you will achieve more. HAHA, NO!

Perfectionism is really disabling. Nothing ever meets your standards, you always feel crummy about yourself and you end up NOT doing work because you're scared that it will end up sucking. You approach everything with massive anxiety because you see all these details that nobody else sees and even if you know you are capable of something, you struggle the entire way through the project.

Achieve more? Maybe. Depends on who you impress. The only "good" thing about perfectionism is that, assuming you don't destroy yourself in the process, you might manage to reach an acceptable level of quality that others can appreciate. And then assuming that does happen the panic sets in with that fear of failure if you can't keep up the level of quality that is now expected of you.

It really, really IS crippling x_x

I've had full on panic attacks in the past because I'm afraid of something not being up to standard and being rejected. I can never just... draw or write something. I have to nitpick it down to the tiniest of atoms. And while I appreciate and encourage constructive criticism, at the same time accepting it makes it extremely difficult not to spiral into a tailspin, especially if it's a weakness you weren't actually aware of. Even when people insist my work is good it's difficult for me agree with them because I just know it could be so much better. People don't understand the amount of struggle (both physical AND mental) it takes to reach the level of acceptability I present it as.

And then the real paradox (and inner struggle) begins when you start to realize that the perfectionism is, in and of itself, a flaw...

From the stamp itself I couldn't say I agreed when I just saw it on your profile. But when I actually clicked on the stamp I saw something I define as something completely different.

From the description it sounds more like an over-achiever to me. Setting goals beyond the standards, criticizing your own work, and willing to accept any sort of criticism no matter how harsh knowing you can improve.

To me a perfectionist is somebody who can't accept the fact that there are going to be challenges in life. That if a mistake is made, they tend to immediately say no and put themselves down as if it's the end of the world as oppose from just trying to simply learn something from it. Can't accept that fact that not everything is perfect and your going to fail at some point of your life. While I see those who have succeed in life to right in their journal that they have failed many times in their life but only kept trying. The ones I call perfectionist sit in their chair and bitch and moan blaming others for their own actions thinking they have to be "perfect."

I am a perfectionist. It is a OCD disorder. I don't moan or bitch or blame others. I have bad perfectionism. If I get below a 97% on any of my grades on my report card I meltdown. I get depressed if I miss anything on an assignment or test or quiz. Perfectionism is dangerous and I HATE IT!!!!! I accept the challenges of life, but am plaqued with constant worries about how one test in 8th grade is going to affect my future. I know it is stupid to think that, yet it is impossible to stop thinking that. People call themselvs perfectionists because they "have" to look nice or have things look nice. Real perfectionists MUST do it right or else to prevent terrible things from happening to our families and friends and selves(even if we know its not true). It is hard to control. (sorry if this sounded mean; I'm sort of offended)

What annoys me the most about being a perfectionist is that it's kind of "forbidden" to say when I'm not happy with a grade/picture/whatever. The reaction is always something like "Why do you even complain, I'd be happy if I had a grade like that!" Well, good for you -.-"
