Stamp: Characters are children by Jammerlee Stamp: Characters are children by Jammerlee
As a writer, my characters are as real to me as any other living person. They were born from my mind, and I have nurtured them, watched them grow, and they have a startling way of surprising me with information about themselves I was never aware of, or doing and saying things I never expected. I am their mother and they are my children.

Original characters. Fan characters. Even semi-canons. They are all alive to me. I treat them as real people and give them all the same respect any living person deserves.

Are your characters that real to you?

My characters start out as my children, then they grow up into terrifying abominations that torment me in my dreams...

... Much like actual children.

They are! And I'm a graet parent! *gives them tragic backstories , puts them in wierd scenarios , makes thier life a living hell , creates a creature that can destroy the world of other characters , shipps them shamelessy unless it's pedophilia or incest and makes them cry*... yeah! A Great parent!

People's characters are their children and yet people draw porn of them. Does that make them pedophiles? :O

Aww! That is so sweet! My characters are like that too. I've sympathy for them, and can relate their feelings and hardships to my life or someone else I know. I have 6 main females (with supporting background family & friends) and counting.

Amen. My OC's are my Best Friends :)
Some  even age when I age. So when I'm 24 and have kids, they'll be 20 and have kids :)
ScryzzetheKat Featured By Owner Jul 19, 2014
My characters are closer to me than many of my friends and real people, as I love them so much. When I do my best to keep up with them telling me their stories, I reveal more and more stuff about each and every one of them.
In all seriousness though, I don't write the stories for my characters. They tell me what to write and it goes down on paper, or rather a text document.
DisneyAreslover Featured By Owner May 30, 2014
You and I seem to think alike as I too consider my characters as my children.☺️👍

I like my Sonic OC because i made him with my characteristics, not because i love him.
But is true some people forgot theyself for their OCs!
I'm not one of them!
Animedemon001 Featured By Owner Mar 12, 2014  Hobbyist Writer
Just my opinion, but if you began to see your characters as real people, especially Fan characters, then they began to turn into Mary-Sues.
Jammerlee Featured By Owner Mar 12, 2014  Hobbyist General Artist
I'm not sure I understand the logic behind that. Could you explain it to me please?
Animedemon001 Featured By Owner Mar 12, 2014  Hobbyist Writer
Sometimes people fall in love with their character, and they start thinking that the character is real. These people will bring their character up in any conversation. I'm fine with people caring about their character, and developing them, but not act like their characters are real.
Jammerlee Featured By Owner Mar 12, 2014  Hobbyist General Artist
I suppose that's a fair way of looking at it *lol* I can't say that I agree though as I see it a little bit differently. I feel that if you treat your characters as though they're real, that it'll project them as fleshed out and believable people in the story. If you treat them as puppets and cardboard, then puppets and cardboard they'll only be. Granted, I also feel that "mary-sue" is a very misused term that applies to many, many characters (I wrote about my feelings on that over here). I don't feel as though talking about a character a lot, for example, makes them a mary-sue - it just shows how much the creator cares for the creation. I feel a mary-sue is in their portrayal and how they command the story itself
Animedemon001 Featured By Owner Mar 12, 2014  Hobbyist Writer
Yeah, I hate it when everyone's like, "OMG Mary-Sue." at every OC they see with one trait of a Mary-Sue. And I mostly mean when someone acts like their OC in a fandom is actually part of the canon.
Jammerlee Featured By Owner Mar 12, 2014  Hobbyist General Artist
Ahh. Fair enough then!

I'm currently writing a book and this is exactly how I feel. If I could have three wishes, one would be that my characters would materialize into living, breathing beings. But still, if you're committed to developing them, writing with them, it's like they're alive anyway, just invisible Broken Fighting Dome (Kawaii Please) So using this in my journal :)
