Ask Movie Slate - Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back.

Originally uploaded on Ask Movie Slate's blog, on May 5th 2015.

I'm afraid I've been unable to produce anything Star Wars related for this year's Star Wars Day, so instead I'm making a re-run of Movie Slate's reviews of the original trilogy, which still rank among some of my favorite drawings I've ever produced. Fear not, I'm not doing this because I'm out of ideas, but because I never uploaded these onto DeviantArt until now. Now I'm fixing this mistake.

Just as it happened with "A New Hope", "Empire Strikes Back" offered so many different choices and memorable scenes I could've storyboarded the whole movie and still not be satisfied with it. In the end I picked this scene as it gave me the chance to draw some Discord and poke fun at one of the most shocking plot twists in cinematic history.

This one was a bit more barren when it came to characters, but I had fun with the background. There's a Pac-Man and a banana hidden in there, and Discord Vader's lightsaber is a toy one, you know, the ones that you shake and they extend? I also never realized how ominous that setting was until I sat down and drew it for this update. It may seem barren in the screen but when you notice all those details there's really a lot of texture that gets lost when you're watching it. I guess that's what good story-telling does. Sets the characters in an environment and makes them so engaging that the scenery doesn't eat them.

And, just as the previous one, what can I say? It's Empire Strikes Back, for many the absolute best sequel ever made in history, and that's something I can't disagree with. I sure love it as well.

I hope you guys enjoy the picture!

I will tell you something interesting.

Both Discord and Darth Vader have the same Polish voice actor: Grzegorz Pawlak.
