This is one of those commissions that I couldn't stop thinking about from the moment I was presented with the idea. I love the image of Christine, engulfed in flames, chasing someone down a road. It's potent and iconic, and it's based on a movie directed by one of my favourite directors of all time! How could I say no? This drawing was too much fun. Not only did I find myself really comfortable drawing the car, but I also enjoyed drawing a minimalistic background for once, which taught me a rather important lesson. Busy backgrounds tend to swallow the characters. I should try and apply this to future drawings.
Happy Day when Buddy Repperton got run over by Christine!
"Christine" must be one of the most underrated movies ever made. It's one of those films that could have only be made in the 80's and yet it presents itself as a period piece. It's very easy to make fun of, but you can say the same about every other Stephen King movie adaptation when you think about it (except maybe those directed by Frank Darabont). "Christine" has the advantage of having John Carpenter at the helm, a film maker who's renowned for taking absolutely bat-shit insane premises and making excellent movies out of them. Suddenly the concept of a killer car not only sounds awesome but also terrifying! Christine becomes a demon, a gas fueled, chromed body, heavy metal, rock-loving killer with a thirst for love and blood. Carpenter's very personal approach makes for very suspenseful scenes (the build up to the killing of Buddy's gang members is just unnerving) and really intense action all bathed in that nerve-wracking electronic music. Also, gotta appreciate a movie that uses practical effects (this was before the CGI debacle of the late 90's). I'm not going to pretend that the movie's perfect, though. The characters are very flat, and they come across as cartoons more than people, only there to be cannon fodder. Also the ending could've been paced better, as this movie feels like it just stops instead of easing itself towards the end. But these are just little dents on what should be considered a classic film that defies genre.
"Christine" makes great use of its source material thanks to the timeless talent of John Carpenter and a good dose of total insanity to deliver a thriller that's both tense and satisfying to watch. Don't let the crazy premise turn you off and give it a chance!
I hope you guys enjoy the picture!
