Description

Mary of Burgundy, also known as Mary the Rich, the only daughter and heir of Duke Charles the Bold, and after his death - the Duchess of Burgundy. Character design based on historical sources: the portrait of Mary Pontinari (Hans Memling, 1477), portrait of Maria Hoose (c. 1473, Jan de Witte) and illustrations from the Hours of Mary of Burgundy (c. 1470-1477, unidentified Flemish illuminator). Here Mary wears a long dress made of cloth of gold, with a floral patter appearing multiple times in sources. The dress has a wide V-shaped neckline, characteristic for 70's of the XV century, filled with a partlet. The dress, trimmed in fur, is belted by a sash. The cone on her head is called haut bonnet, and is kept in place with the help of a specially designed, velvet-covered wire visible on her forehead. The haut bonnet also has a veil of transparent velvet and additional bands of velvet called frontlet. The haut bonnet evolved around 1440's, but started loosing on height by 1470's. Mary's example is an exception however, despite the change in fashion, she still apears in a very high haut bonnet, as it's height was a symbol of her status.
