Pasties (That is pronounced Past-ees)

1 lbs Hamburger (or ground meat of choice)
2 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes
1 White Onion
3-4 Carrots
3 cups flour
2 sticks butter
Cold Water (Amount varies)  I usually end up using around 1/2c total. See specific instructions
Salt to taste (About 1/2tsp)
Pepper to taste

Aluminum Foil
Cellophane/Plastic Wrap
Cooking Spray
Baking Sheet
Large surface for rolling out dough
Rolling Pin
Pot for Potatos
Cutting board/Knife or Food Processor


1. If your butter is soft, skip this step. If your butter is cold and hard: Melt butter and then let it cool off in the refrigerator (Don't let it get solid again)
2. Mix flour and salt in a large bowl.
3. Add butter and mix together.
4. Slowly add cold water. Add in about 3TBSP at first, then add 1 TBSP at a time until it's the proper consistency.  You need to be able to roll out this dough, so to test, take about a quarter sized lump of it and spread it on the palm of the hand. If you can spread it very thin without it breaking apart or tearing, it's the proper consistency.  Form the dough into a ball
5. Put plastic wrap in a bowl and place the doughball on the plastic wrap. Then cover it up and set it in the fridge (You can use the same bowl you melted the butter in.)
6. Let it sit in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.

1. Peel and cut the potatoes into small cubes. Size doesn't really matter, but I try to keep them around 1/2inch or so.
2. In a large pot, boil the potato cubes for about 10 minutes or until soft with a fork.  Drain and allow to cool slightly so you don't burn yourself when mixing the other ingredients.

-Other stuff: (When the dough is ready)
1. Preheat oven to 350F.  Place aluminum foil on a baking sheet and spray with nonstick cooking spray.
2. Chop up the onion and carrots into bite sized pieces (Whatever your preference is for how big).
3. Mix the onion, carrots, meat and potatoes in a large bowl.  Add a little salt and pepper, and whatever spices you like here.  I find it easier to hand mix this.
4. Cut up the dough into four equal sized portions and roll into balls.
5. Take one of the dough balls and start rolling it out until it's a thin sheet (note, doing this on cellophane/plastic wrap makes this a lot easier).
6. When your dough is about the size of a dinner plate, put about a cup and a half of the meat/potato/veggie mix on one side of the dough, near the edge.  Fold the rest of the dough over it and squish the ends of the dough together to form a pocket.  Put the pasty on the baking sheet and repeat for the rest of the dough balls and meat mix.  Be sure to portion everything just right so you don't have too much of the meat mix.
7. Bake at 350F for 1hr.  Let it cook.  Eat with lots of ketchup.
This is our pasty recipe. It's a Yooper thing (From the UP of Michigan).  I learned this from my late husband who was a Yooper.

This is a great, hearty meal and it's especially good for people on a budget. You can make 4 pasties from the ingredients above. For about $20 you can make 8 meals total. You can cook and then freeze them, and they'll last for months.  Once frozen, just plop them in the preheated 350F oven for about 25 minutes and you've got a fairly quick, effortless meal.
