CREATURES OF OMEA#04 Pine crab
Pine crabs, also know as cone crabs, are omnivorous crustaceans that live on land in pine forests near water. Adult crab's abdomen is protected by hard chitin that resembles a pine cone, and helps the creature to blend to it's surroundings. Soft and vulnerable abdomen of a juvenile crab is not protected by the "cone", so they often use bark to cover it.
They are good climbers, and move as easily on trees as on sand - where they dig themselves into if they feel threatened. They will leave their "cones" on surface, which will fool most predators to thinking it is an actual pine cone and leaving the crab alone.
Their size varies normally from about 2cm/1in to 10cm/4in, but they can grow 20cm/8in long, and biggest are know to be even almost 30cm/1ft in total length. Previous#03 IndrogNext#05 Gargoyle
