Another commission for the Dark Angels Codex. In addition to staying on model, I really like to add as much personality as I can to the characters I paint. Even though there isn't maybe much room in the project brief for varying designs and facial features, paying attention to things like how much a character would be sweating and just plain TIRED from fighting can really add to a piece in subtle ways!

This is a really good piece. The colours and the way everything is drawn is really impressive. Not to mention how you did his face and expression really do give him a lot of personality in a chaotic scenario. Awesome work.
Thank you very much! I really wanted him to feel like more than just a generic space hulk, so I'm glad it comes through haha.
Man, this is really well-done! It's a shame that Games Workshop just seems to want its artists to copy the models these days, but that doesn't take away from your skill at all - this Marine definitely looks like he's being put through the meat grinder. It'd be nice to see what would happen if they let you get really creative with their IP!
Thank you very much. Yeah staying on model is just the nature of the job. But there's always little ways you can get creative with it.
This is deserving of the Codex alright. He looks so angry and the picture is simply bursting with action.
Thank you! It's a very fantastical world, but I really wanted to give this guy a hint of more human qualities. Like, even if he's built to be a rage filled war machine, I wanted it to seem like those qualities were being pushed through all the exhaustion that would come from battle.
what did you use to paint this??
This piece was done in Photoshop CS3.
why not update most new brushes dont work on cs3 ??
I actually did make the jump to CC 2014 right after this project. Though I still use pretty much the same brushes lol.
Wow, dude this is freakin' awesome I love that subtle blur effect you've put around the intakes of the jump pack. This might just be the finest official GW art ever!
damn awesome art here!
Really cool work
I don't want to be a downer but I'll be honest here. I really don't dig the new art in the new da-codex that much The action filled backgrounds and the notion of speed and movement ist fantastic, but it gets ruined in my opinion by the center, it's clearly vissible in this and the ravenwing piece, the body and armour proportions are just not right, they seem off and weird, it looks so comically and is in stark contrast to the realistic rest of the scene, it has no dark 40k-flavour and my friends largely agree with me. It's such a shame because the rest of your non-40k artworks is absolutely amazing.
Thanks for the feedback! I'll definitely consider the points you've made in any forthcoming 40K work I get (though it will be a good while until I can actually show any of it). The proportions are definitely tricky with these pieces; I've been requested on more than one occasion to make my Space Marines beefier, which ends up being a kind of double edged sword. On the one hand, they definitely look more BUFF and TOUGH than I initially would have ended up with, which is good. On the other, their heads end up looking a bit comically small in comparison to the rest of their bodies. Would you say these issues extend to a lot of the new art in general, or just my own take on the brand?
Now that is Space Marine worthy of the name.
Traditional red weapons. I love you man.
