The last voyage of the Kaga

When i was a child, i loved to build modelkits of ships and planes. But it was the artwork on the box top, that really excited me. Those artworks were done by artists like John Steel, Jack Leynnwood or Roy Cross and all those years, they still impress me.

My painting is a homage to all those great artists. It shows the IJN Kaga, a heavy aircraft carrier of the imperial Japanese navy on her last voyage in 1942. At first light, she is heading trough heavy seas of the pacific towards Midway island, where she will meet her fate.

I spend hours and hours of research to get the technical details right, but the most challenge became the waves, which I have overpainted a couple of times until i was satisfied.

Photoshop, no cheats, no texture, no 3D...just painting.

"edit" I resubmitted the print for a larger size and better contrast."

Great Perspective on the Ship! You've seen the News Last week? The Kaga and the Soryu so far have been found by the Research Group founded by Paul Allen [of Microsoft fame].IJN Kaga wreck
Amazing what the Advances in ROV Tech have allowed in just the past Five to Ten Years.

USS ENTERPRISE CV-6 DID NOT DESERVE TO BE SCRAPPED!😢😭 IF AND AIRCRAFT CARRIER DESERVES TO BE A FLOATING MUSEUM/MEMORIAL, IT'S ENTERPRISE!😢😭 SHE SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN SCRAPPED!😢😭 HER FATE WAS FAR TOO BRUTAL!😢😭 SCRAPPING ENTERPRISE IS LIKE A CRIME!😢😭

Thank you so much! Very kind! :-)
Fabulous work of art and historical painting, Jacklionheart. In my younger years I crossed these waters between Japan and Midway aboard U.S. Navy warships many times and must say you caught the environment and look and somehow even the emotion of being there. Really really wonderful and to see the work you did to get it right is inspiring and admirable. So many things to like about this. I am especially drawn to the structure and detail around the stern and the Kaga sailors taking a break there.

I found your painting here on web search looking for works that I would aspire to try. I am a novice to graphic art and want to learn to do similar work to share memories of ships I was aboard with shipmates and family; in fact I am looking for any tutorials or lessons online and would especially want a mentor although that might be asking too much.

Again, great work Jacklionheart, thank-you for sharing it.

Amazing, this SO deserves the DD! Even now like 5 years later I doubt that there are many pictures out there that equal this in detail/compsitio/etc!

The realism here is amazing, from the design to the waves.

Thank you, painting the waves almost drove me nuts ;-)
