Treasure Map Project

Description

In the summer of 2006 I was teaching art classes for kids at the Old Sculpin Gallery on Martha's Vineyard. One day I decided we should have a pirate day, so I had the kids design their own treasure maps and then showed them how to age the paper. Basically, we crinkled the paper, ripped it up, dropped some ink blotches on it, dunked it in water, and then rubbed inexpensive coffee grounds into the paper. It worked really well.

This was the demonstration one that I made up in advance so that I would have a map all designed and ready when it came time to show the kids how to age the paper. The kids helped me name a bunch of places on the map - influences came from (obviously) Pirates of the Caribbean, Peter Pan, The Princess Bride, The Wizard of Oz, and things around Martha's Vineyard. It was one of the most popular projects we did all summer.

Materials used: plain white printer paper, ink, watercolor, a little bit of watered down gold acrylic paint, water, and coffee grounds.

Arrr matey! :ahoy:
