Hi hello, where did the good ol' dA days go
Is anyone out there? It's so quiet here now!
I mean I would probably move over to tumblr completely if it wasn't so ass backwards to try to communicate with anyone there, but like, I like having a gallery on this site and stuff too. And tumblr is honestly shit a lot of the time for other reasons. Anyway my other journal entry was almost a year old so I decided to get rid of it.

I'm the most active on ComicFury, where I host my webcomic, Bicycle Boy. I've been updating that damn comic every Friday for two years (only missed one update!) and I've amassed 140 pages. Christ. I always think I'm farther ahead than I really am. I wonder how many more years it will be until I finish the damned thing.

I wish I knew how to advertise myself better. My online presence has dwindled to mostly lurking right now, so I apologize for that. I've been channeling most of my creative energy into Bicycle Boy. That leaves little else for me to post art-wise. I remember being younger, drawing all the time, and being disappointed when my favourite artists would get older and busier and would post way less. Sad to say that I've become one of them. For now. But no internet presence =/= no art! I should put together some sketch dumps or something.

Thanks for sticking around,
Jack

Yooo! I actually spend most of my time on Tumblr. But I too have fallen behind on my art, but I have been drawing tons of pictures. My busy schedule was actually brought on by my college works, but since I've graduated I have break time.

BB is such a fantastic comic. I love the mystery surrounding Poet and the world he's in. :)

If you have a tumblr that's great, I can follow you there. (I know I follow the BB blog, but I'm not sure I follow your main one)

What did you get a degree in!?!! :D I was too shitty to stay in school, it ain't my thing. Now I'm trying to even think of what to go back to it for. Art school was just kinda. Dumb I guess.

Thank you for reading my dumb comic, Amy ;_;

My personal tumblr is thegreatermassofdeath.tumblr.c… , and my comic blog is bicycleboycomic.tumblr.com . Sorry I don't advertise it here, I kind of want to keep it and my dA separate.

I got a degree in Freelance writing. What I want to do now is improve my art skills very badly. My art mediocre so I'm trying different methods of fixing it.

No problem! It's not dumb it's a really interesting comic! I love the setting, the characters, the whole mystery surrounding Poet, everything!

That's cool, I understand ^^ I'm Sapphire-Sunlight (I would have used SapphireSky, but someone took that URL) People can pretty much find me easily since I go by Sapphire now. XD

I totally feel the same way, man. You're not alone! but at least you have good reason!! dude your webcomic is such an accomplishment!!! You're really an inspiration to me! I want the energy and tenacity you have to just PUMP it out!
Da would be a great way to talk more about your webcomic! A sort of way for people to get to know the artist more: journal about your process, open up Q&A's, advertise live streams, etc!
YOu're one of the reasons I stick around DA these days!

I still feel like I should be spending less time lurking the internet and more time actually drawing! & I know I can't go overboard because I gots the tendonitis, but still don't wanna use shit like that as an EXCUSE.
also THANK YOOOUU, I'm trying my best with that darned comic. I wish I could get my buffer back but don't think I'll have any luck until this chapter is over (that's when I take a break).
fuck man what do i do with dA? you soundin so savvy right now.

Man that's just playing it safe, not an "excuse." Tendinitis is no small ordeal X.x and oh man XD not having a buffer can be so life consuming!! After I ran out of buffer for my webcomic, I felt like every day was devoted to it without any breaks X.x  I wish you luck this chapter!!
as for da, it still has its uses! I used to post thumbnail teaser images for each webcomic page, which is where I got most of my readers from. I would also do promotional things like make those Da valentines when Valentine's Day rolled around, and other promotional things to boost my webcomics visibility. Not sure if it would be as effective as back in DA's hay day but you never know!

Aaaugh this so much :C But I totally understand (cuz it's definitely happened to me too)

I have noticed activity dropping off here, probably as people move their activity to tumblr; I agree it's a lousy place to carry on a conversation though, so it kinda sucks. I gradually came around on twitter (with extreme initial reluctance), so it hasn't been so bad; I do miss having one solid core place where it seemed like everyone was hanging out and talking and updating, though.

Damn it all. :'( Why can't I just have the time (and moreso, the will) to draw more often.

What is twitter like? It just seems like a drama fest. So I guess count me in the reluctant group.

Twitter is the worst place for drama; mostly I use it to keep up with people I already know from other venues (irl, other forums, etc); mostly webcomic folks. For just getting little peeks into what they do with their time, and swapping jokes or workflow tips, it's great! I guess it depends a lot on who you follow, though, because if you have no context for someone's tweets you don't get as much out of the platform; this is why I add people really slowly. But I've been finding it a lot more interesting recently, specially since it feels less intimidating to reply to other people's posts on there.

(I wish I had more time in the day to draw.... lately it seems like outside of comic pages I don't have time to draw much else, aside from little doodles XD;; Need my energy baaaccckk)

You know, I wasn't sure if I believed you at first, but now that I've been on twitter for more than a year I see that you were completely right. It is so bad for drama. Sometimes it feels like you're drowning in it. Yeesh.

boy, do i know those feels. I spend all my creative juices on Hotaru on ComicFury, and drawing for myself comes so rarely these days. DA has become a quiet place, and i kind of stopped updating for the most part becuase i kinda stopped making the kind of work i want to have in my portfolio. I miss being active in the art communities, and i watch stuff happen on Tumblr from time to time that i get all jealous for not being part of, but i don't hang out on Tumblr enough for that. Simple comments and replies and galleries and are valuable, and the reblog option has its merits and flaws. I mostly art on Facebook these days, but considering i keep my FB on non-public, that doesn't help a whole lot. :/

Well, we're glad you're still around.

What's your user account on CF? :U
Yeah I feel that. I kinda felt like I should only post my shitty art to tumblr and then put the slightly...better stuff? Here? I dunno though.
And yeah the shit going on on tumblr, I feel that too. I see peeps postin' their little zine comics and getting hella recognition for it, and I guess I tried to do the same without nearly as much success. It's hard. What the heckie do people want? And what kind of stuff were you seein' go down that you wished you were part of? I'm curious.

It's so hard to communicate on tumblr though. I really really really wish there was a universal commenting system of SOME KIND like the one on dA.

comicfury.com/profile.php?user…

Buh, i've gotten so lazy with my intarweb accounts that it's just sad. Behance and wordpress and Society6...  i mean, it would behoove me to update them once in a while. Cuz, you know, munnies. And tumblr fame is ever-enticing, isn't it?

the occasional artmeme things, like the Witchsona (ie witchy persona) the sequential art volleys between artists and illustration sequels to irl memes that explode into comes all on their own, that kind of stuff. There was a tumblr meetup at Small Press Expo this past weekend that i didn't feel right going to.  (And also commute and lack of 2day con pass kinda added to the decision of not attending. :/   )

Nice, nice! Do you ever go on the comicfury forums?

Tumblr fame IS enticing, but is it really worth it? The userbase can get pretty fuckin' scary ..

I'm just...jealous of the people who have like, OCs, and they have a serious following for them. Like they don't even write a story or anything they just draw lots of goofy minicomics or silly drawings and everyone loves them. I wish that was me, yo.

I have not yet stumbled on the Comicfury forums. Are they worth the timesink?

I'm easing into tumblr with Inktober and a tumblr Outfit challenge thingy. We'll see how it goes, but what a buggy, piece of shit site. I JUST WANT TO SEE BOOKS OF ADAMS MAIN PAGE WHY WONT YOU SHOW IT TO ME YOU CRAP SITE YOU

I'm wondering if it's even worth the effort. >.>

Man, i was really hoping my Enzo (psychosako.deviantart.com/art/…) was going to do that for me, but it just never took. If there was a fandom, it was secret to me.

granted, you could crudely draw Bicycle Boy being all cute and shit, and we'd eat it up. But ya know.

I got surprised this past weekend: I had mysterious people messaging me asking me if i was at Baltimore Comic con so they could hug me and get autographs and stuff. Me. have fans? What this? I don't even.

No. They are not worth it. They're much like any discussion on a 'social issue' on tumblr... mostly everyone is scared to say anything that leans even slightly away from Politically Correct Language, so discussion gets stifled pretty easily. The vast majority of threads is a topic, and everyone pops in and gives their two cents for one post, and then leaves. No discussion at all. Don't even bother, homie.

Wah, Inktober is cool. I already work with ink all the time though, I want to try something different. Maybe I'll finally try to learn how to watercolor paint properly. Later. I have too many projects right now.

Enzo is one handsome dude, holy cripes. I love the curve of his nose. So much. I didn't really expect anyone from Bicycle Boy to get that mini fandom thing, and they didn't. I think most of my readers prefer Machk (not that I can blame them, he is IMMENSELY likeable, whearas Poet is a stupid passive little shit). Do you really think people would find that shithead cute. I just don't see it man.

Woah what, that is radical! You musta been so flattered. I'm proud of you. One time a fellow comic artist on this here dA was messaging me asking if I'd be at Toronto Comic Con. But that is 3/4 of the continent away from me, and was not happening. I've never been to a con. Are they good shit?

Well, there's Drawloween too... pbs.twimg.com/media/CPoVIdqUEA…

Aw, thanks. I like Enzo a great deal. I feel like Poet is constantly in the wrong place at the wrong time, and Machk happens to be the boot-stomping level head that gets him out of that bullshit.

To be quite honest, i'm not sure about current con culture, as i've recently been assured it is not what it used to be. For me, it's a great excuse to see my art pals (from art school, from the anime con circuit, from the comic con circuit, from the horror scene, etc etc). It's gotten to the point where for local events, i've started just attending the post-con events, like Drink and Draws, to hang out with everyone. I intend on getting back into tabling because, well, money, and spreading the word on the comic now that i have content to sell.

Goodbye wallet basically. Rest in fucking pieces. Yo , nice on the free year! 2K is a bitch but you should be able to save up that much with half a year or less of working at minimum wage, I'd think. YOU GOT THIS, DUDE.

Heck yeah! When I was a kid/teen, I started and abandoned AT LEAST 40 comic projects. So many of them only got to 1-2 pages. But I'm still glad I did them, because I learned something every time. I think I've actually FINISHED like... hm. ....

- 3 shitty original manga books when I was a kid (120 pages each, b&w pencil)
- 1 shitty naruto fancomic when kid (35 pages, b&w pencil)
- about 4 chapters of dumb emo boy OC comic when I was a teen (114 pages, b&w inked)
- 2 chapters of Burning Avalon OCT (40 pages, b&w greyscale)
- 4 chapters/rounds of Roulette City OCT (70 pages, full color)
- dumb asscreed romeo/juliet comic for school (10 pages, full color)
- Tumor Zine (16 pages, b&w inked)
- Line of Action Zine (16 pages, b&w inked)
- almost 3 chapters of Bicycle Boy (140 pages, full color)

and then lots & lots of really tiny comics that were actually intended to be a couple pages. It feels good to look back on it, even if a ton of it was complete shit-tier anime crap, it was still stepping stones to getting better n' stuff. I hope you get back to your comic one day, but if not that's awesome too. Just do what you wanna do, man.

YEAH MAN. If my mental health wasn't getting in the way of getting a job it'd be easier, but I'm
trying to scavenge up some commissions to revive my bank account.

Dude I remember Roulette City, I can't remember why I never joined it before hm.
And wow man, you were a very busy kid! No wonder you're at the level you're at today. p:
I definitely want to get back to it, and I'm working on plot related things so far, but I don't think I'll be
really started until I've.. got everything planned out. I tried to wing it previously with only the first ten
pages sorted and most of the plot being a jumbled up mess, but hopefully it'll be better this time around. u-u

I believe in you, dude. YOU GOT THIS.
I just got a second job to go along with a comic book job @__@;;; I've never juggled two jobs at once before so I'm kind of freaked out about it. But at least I have work.

Roulette City was really fun. Not a lot of people (including myself) were terribly invested in the sequel, though. It's too bad. The high time of OCTs has passed, no one will commit to them anymore.

Good luck on your comic! If you've got the drive, you'll finish it no problem. I believe.

Comicfury is the official site for Bicycle Boy, Smackjeeves is the mirror. Eventually they'll both update at the same time but right now the CF site is the most current.

Yeah, same. At least for now. You never know which annoying change they'll introduce next, eventually I might have enough... Or everyone I chat with here will have enough, since any art network is kind of pointless without a community.

Thanks! :) And please take no offence in me saying "I'll read it, I'll read it" and then not reading it - I just have a huge webcomic to-read list, and not a lot of time, and I prefer to leave some feedback if a comic has a comment section so with longer comics it just takes me a while to get to them but I'll get there.

Most of my drawing energy these days has gone into webcomic development. >D I'm excited about it, finally started drawing pages. But now I just have to figure out if I want to give myself a huge buffer before I start posting to an actual site or if I just want to say nuts to any formal deadlines and finish the whole damn thing before I post any of it.
