Dear deviantART,

Two of my computers were slowly destroyed by a powerful virus contracted from one of the shitty ads on this website. I'm not going to take that chance again. Like, shit, I'd rather see your stupid garish fucking orange banner than lose several thousand dollars worth of hardware again, okay? Adblock is a godsend. I'm never going back. yoooo

No love ever,

Jack

You know what's kind of funny? When I had premium/core I still get ads even when I turned it off. The main ads that they still played were those annoying ones with sound which spooked me every time they come out because they were so loud! When I finally got adblock I swear I heard angels singing because it was a miracle, the ads were gone at last.

I know right? I told them about it but by that time my membership was almost up so I didn't see the point in fixing it. I just told them I'm getting ad block and that's that.

99% sure i got a serious virus from this site a few years ago. their ugly and unreasonably annoying "WE KNOW YOU'RE NOT HERE FOR THE ADS" is basically just an ad anyway, but at least there isn't the risk of getting viruses from it. the fact that people are still getting viruses today is absolutely appalling. if they want us to give them money, maybe they could... lol, do any number of things to make the site worth donating to? or at least have quality control for the ads they show??

yeah no sometimes when sites ask me to unblock them i will cause i'm incredibly easy to guilt-trip but deviantART is has the single worst ads of any site i regularly visit, and is the only one my computer's ever caught something from.

yeah dude...me too. That and youtube. But mostly deviantART. The ads on youtube are annoying, but never posed a security threat to my computer. Like I said in the journal I've had entire computers wrecked by the viruses I contracted from regular browsing with ads on dA (didn't click any of them! bah!!!). I hear that tumblr might be having the same problem with ads that redirect your browser to different websites. Be careful.

SAME! This is the reason I got ABP. DA has had some pretty bad virus issues in the past and it almost destroyed my custom built computer that cost over $2,000. I had Adblock ever since and it's been fantastic! I never want to face that issue again. I don't have another computer so if this one bites the dust all of a sudden, I'm screwed! I want to get as much as I can out of this thing and I'm not going to let a cruddy virus take it from me :p So yeah, DA needs to lay off or fix their virus problem. Adblock saves computer lives and lots of hair pulling.

Protect themselves from cyber attacks is a very important thing, so that is fine adblock and all the other ways to block ads for which we do not know the degree of safety.
In my opinion, deviantART has a moral obligation to protect its deviants, even if they are joined in a free form. If you are part of a community (as dA wants to be considered) the same community must protect its members. I do not think there are any excuses about this.
(Since I'm a core-member, and also I use Linux as an operating system, I not fear viruses, adwares, etc. So what I said above do not concern me personally, but it stems from the fact of feeling myself uncomfortable when I have news that someone has been hacked because of a malicious ads).
For more about security online, you can also take a look at Trivial passwords are easy to violate

Be careful out there! :)

That's a really interesting article. Thanks for linking it!!! :)
Man, I think if dA actually cared about protecting its users they would have done something about their virus ads? I mean, that happened a long time ago, but I know there was nothing done about it for months and months, and eventually I just grabbed an adblocker so I wouldn't be at risk anymore...

This. And you can remove the annoying orange banner (which is seriously more annoying than ANY please-disable-adblock notice I've EVER seen) with AdBlock as well. :)

Are there seriously still trash ads pushing out viruses on this site? And they want to whine about you using adblock? L M A O. Your own peace of mind has way more value than their bottom line. They'll get their money cuz there's plenty of other chumps. They need to get over themselves.

Yeeeah. I mean they're just following suit of what a lot of other websites are doing to try to get people to politely whitelist their website in adblock, but hell, dA's ads are one of the first reasons I got adblock in the first place

I'm gonna assume that all the money that goes into DA gives them access to resources such as hiring persons or making new positions of employment for existing staff. Or, y'know, just think wishfully about all that & HOPE they could get a damn clue & assign a dedicated person/team to vetting the content of ads that come into their site. That's what needs to be done nowadays. It's a shite job, but going on good faith with whatever ad service gets used nowadays is never good. The service just wants to make $ & could care less if someone's computer gets nuked. DA should because it's putting confidence in that service & thus putting the reputation of its brand on the line.

Tl;dr: DA is a dumb diaper baby & needs to fix their busted ad shite.

The ads on this sites were more than likely were responsible for past problems I had with my PC's as well before I had Adblock installed.

Seriously, DA, stop begging. Plus NO ONE wants to pay $15+ so many months just so they can get rid of the annoying ads.

oohhh my gods, the features you have to pay for on this site are FREE on other websites, to boot. dA is slowly killing itself.

I know right, it's super ridiculous the things you have to pay for! Name changes, add turn-offs, additional widgets, etc..

Come on, no one wants to pay money for that, and the points aren't as helpful as they think. It's true, they're literally losing money this way.
