Lonely Pogs
Growing up I didn’t follow many trends, but I remember that at one point kids in my school had pogs. I wanted to play with them so I asked my parents for some one day. I don’t remember if they were expensive or not, but I eventually got some. I was so excited to get them, but quickly learned that being part of the pack isn’t everything.
I finally showed some of my favorite pogs to kids at school and felt like I was part of the group. But I slowly realized that all these kids were playing outside of school because we couldn’t play with them in school. That’s when I learned that pogs isn’t just a toy, but a shared activity.
As time went by I collected more and made my own pogs, but no one really cared. I just continued to play by myself at home. I never had friends to share this with and it was obvious that I was missing out on something. I eventually gave up on pogs, but that desire to fit in never left until I was older and realized that following trends isn’t always the best way to
Vintage love story - Reverse Caption
Story by @JessaMar
Connie had always been given to nostalgia, even for things that she hadn’t actually experienced the first time. Swing music from the 1940s, old farmhouses, rotary telephones, and fashion from the 1920s or 1960s; it all resonated for her as strongly as the TV shows from her own childhood.
She met Phil at a friend's cookout, and didn’t expect that they would hit it off. He worked with computers and spoke eagerly about the latest gadgets; Connie used modern technology willingly enough, but she didn’t find anything exciting about it. But Phil didn’t look askance at the hat she wore, and when she talked about her favorite songs he immediately looked them up on his phone. Then he pulled out a bluetooth speaker so that they could listen together, and she was tickled to see that it was fashioned to look like an antique radio.
When the virus hit, it was easy enough for Connie to embrace new old-fashioned habits: baking bread, fermenting food, and narrowing her focus to
Animal Crossing for the soul
I’ve always played games on and off through out my life. Sometimes it was to distract myself other times it was to try to fit in with my peers. Of course there are those games that I will always enjoy like Zelda, Mario, Tetris, etc. But I never had as much fun as I did playing Animal Crossing with my wife during this pandemic.
Anima Crossing never crossed my radar early on, I didn’t even know it was a thing until I met Brittney. She constantly had me try playing whatever Animal Crossing game she was playing, on DS and Mobile, but it just didn’t stick with me. Then the pandemic hit, and just like everyone else stuck inside Brittney got Animal Crossing. It was such a great distraction that I hoped on and joined in too.
The game wasn’t my typical type of game, but there was something charming about building an island however you want and crafting things. Once we were able to travel to each others island we would run around doing random things on the islands. Something about being able to
Game junkie - Reverse Caption
Poem by @YouInventedMe
i.
step one
put the quarter in
prepare to beat your high score
morph into your second skin
joy comes from a joystick
or press of the buttons
mash 'em all at once
and can't nobody tell you nothin'
transform under neon lights
conquer every hurdle
whether you're a
spiky-haired yellow kid
or pizza-eating turtle
ii.
catch that Pac-Man fever
become an 8-bit junkie
it's more fun than a barrel
tossed at you by a monkey
find your magic sword & shield
to save Hyrule from doom
or use a Hundred Hand Slap
to prevent a Sonic Boom
prepare to hop
across the road
when the coast is clear
and finish any ninja
who says
"Get Over Here"
iii.
zombies ate your neighbors
and there's no one else to save ya
so act like you're a Belmont
and this is Castlevania
defeat those Ghouls n Goblins
every unholy creation
birthed from the sick minds
of the Umbrella Corporation
want the uprising televised?
you've got the solution
set it all to music
and it's a
Dance Dance Revolution
iv.
you can
