Mead Hall by J-Humphries Mead Hall by J-Humphries
Travelers and soldiers relax at the end of a long march.

Yeah yeah yeah, tobacco wasn't introduced into Europe until about 1518, but, like, pipe smoking is awesome.

brilliant atmospheric picture, oh about the pipe being in the wrong time - not necessarily so, here in Ireland "Norse Pipes" have been excavated in areas of Ireland once inhabited by the Irish Vikings but what they were smoking in them is anybodies guess

Lichens, probably. The right ones could you give epic, terrifying visions, making them a favorite of bards.

Ah, hell it's surprising what can be used for that sort of stuff - our science teacher gave us a lecture about all the plants that could be used e.g stramonium datura amongst others is found in Asia and across Europe and North America.

It can give horrifying psychological effects and hippys did fool around with it during the 60's it's also been used as an analgesic pain killer or for knocking patients out by the Greeks prior to bonesetting.  Irish peasants sometimes used it to bump off the local lord or poison his cattle or his hunting dogs.

Then again the Romans used to fool around with substances like hemp etc. and god alone knows the stuff the Irish Druids were drinking to give them "Hippy" style visions.

You captured this very well. I'm sure they were dank, sour-smelling places without a lot of room to move about. This one looks especially stuffy and cramped.
I think generally people think of how a place looks or sounds. But in a setting like this the smell would be overpowering - to the point you could taste it.

Very atmospheric. Get kind of a stuffy feel from that lighting and smoke

Nothing like some good friends, bread, meat and mead to pass a cold night!
