Magic is starting to release their new Kaladesh plane.  Super awesome artifact invention world built around Indian art, culture, and style. I did a few for this set that I really ended up liking.

If I didn't have a bit of a sore spot with Magic the Gathering for personal reasons, I'd fave this immediately. Its just plain neat.

How come MTG artists are all digital now and try going for photo-realism? Cards in the vintage days all had a unique style. It wasn't all realistic looking. The artists now are virtually indistinguishable from one another. Drew Tucker, Anson Maddocks, Mark Tedin, Kev Walker, Mark Poole--all had a unique style. We don't see that anymore. It's so sterile now, even the card text boxes are all the same.

But this is good artwork, ignoring the fact that it's for MTG.

Wizards of the Coast has extensive style guides for matching look and content.
They have made a uniform push for quality and style in their artists as well.

There is a current style fad among illustrators because, art directors and _FANS_
have had a huge response to the more realistic concept art for film and video games.

As for digital, it's cheaper, easier, and cleaner.  There are many traditional artists still,
but taking photos of paintings for print is a pain in the ass.

I too prefer wild styles and interesting variety.
But, you are viewing first hand the homogeneous results of non-specialist popular opinion,
and the lack of public reward for risk taking.

It's pretty much the same dilemma of every tributary of the entertainment industry.

Hm, thanks for the response. Didn't know they had a style guide. I don't know what it is people like about such sterile works of art. There's nothing special about any of it anymore. It's sad.

The detail in the metal is superb. I love all the little spots light reflects from the surface, very crisp!

This is my new favorite card.  Don't play much Magic anymore, but I'll probably buy a copy because it's so cute! <3

I just did a set for a D&D Adventure that was all of the wondrous figurines, but requested as clockwork. This would definitely have inspired me for the Onyx Dog! Super cool!

Just watched the video conference about the Kaladesh concept development. I loved the creation process of this new world, and your work looks really good, also animated.
