Each fighter’s gaze was locked upon her opponent as the two finally got within maximum striking distance of each other. Jessica hadn’t forgotten the fact that it had been Valerie in both the previous rounds who’d scored the first attack, and so she snapped off a couple warning jabs as Valerie dipped her upper body low, watching carefully for signs of early aggression. The Ripper avoided the first, but the second clipped her hairline as she approached quickly with a loaded right overhand hook. Jessica saw it and raised up, leaning back on her haunches to let the danger pass her by.
Even though she missed, Valerie stayed low and continued to press inward, knowing she’d need to protect her body from incoming shots. Jessica responded to Valerie’s advance with a right straight aimed for her nose, however it was easily slipped to one side as Valerie returned fire with a low left hook. To dodge this, Jessica took a half step back and bent forward, causing the punch to just barely graze her flank.
Valerie kept with Jessica’s movement, and stepped in to close the distance before Jessica could widen it. As she did so, she straightened up just a bit with her gloves guarding chest level, which Jessica noticed and took advantage of with a right feint to the body. As Jessica predicted, Valerie scrambled to defend the phantom punch, which left her head wide open for a sharp left hook beneath her slightly reddening right eye.
