so i saw the new teenage mutant ninja turtles movie. my review: think of the best Chicago style deep dish pizza you ever tasted. you know, the one that's compact but its stuffed with layers of ingredients. that pizza is the 90's Turtles movie. the 2014 is more like the $5 dollar one from "Little Caesars". that's not to say the "Little Caesars" its not edible or anything , you can just tell it was made on the cheap. only problem with this pizza, is that it has a long Megan Fox hair baked into the crust, and that kinda sours the pizza eating experience.

you might think that's just the nostalgia talking but when i got home from the theater i watched the 90's version for the first time in a while, and what really surprise me is that the Reboot last about 10 minutes longer than the 90's one yet it feels like it didn't last more than a hour. it all comes down to the pacing, which is something this new one really fails at. but its kinda expected , since they're alot of re-shoots for this film. the most notable is the Shreddder which was originally going to be the rich white guy, played by William Fichtner, and then changed, after what i assume was a negative screening or something, to be played by the original villan Oruko Saki. if you look hard enough you can see the parts they ducktaped together.

and the turtles are great in this new one, you can argue weather you like their designs or not, but the characterization is spot on. only issue is there's not enough of that on screen. and that Megan Fox.. yeah, shes the low point of this film. they try to make April O'neil the center of the universe but as played by Megan fox...yeah that was not the right choice. now the argument will come up to say that this is a kids film and doesn't need to be any more deep than cartoon episode. well the original was also a kids film, corny jokes and all, but it still had better use of their time with the characters. its has actions beats and slow moments to let you breathe and get to know the characters. it had soul. the new one just wants to get moving while telling you every bit of exposition while it gets from point A to B, and hopefully throw some character development if it can fit it in. and yes i know this movie was not directed by Michael Bay, but there's no doubt, it was made with his recipe.

well, that made a lot of sense. There were parts of the movie that I forgot that it's Oruko Saki that's in the armor and thought it was William Fitchner.

they added that mini confrontation with April and vernom in the lab, cause if you think about it, after hat she really didn't have a reason to be on top of the building. and also she gets the killing blow on Shredder cause, again following the logic that is what Fitchner that kill her father and she get payback.

They really played up the importance of April in this. Not a fan of that, but I guess it's the whole following that "movie-making" mold where movie makers think they NEED a human character to connect with the audience. Like fucking Shit Labeef in Transformers.

It was leaked in an early trailer, and there was a mass of, "That white dude isn't *really* Shredder, is he? That would be horrible!".

i doubt the reaction to the trailer alone was what did it,  they pay more attention to screenings. which probably just confirmed that outrage

Yea, likely.

The Steve Barron's movie is for me a model of what every comic book movie should follow. Compared to Superman the movie or Pacific Rim, it's modest, not as ambitious, but it got a good script, good comedians, funny jokes that don't undramatize the more serious moments, good action scenes with ideas and important issues (we care for the good guys), emotions, suspens.... Like I said, it's not a big prestigious movie, but they seriously did the job, without being pretentious, and without underestimating the intelligence of the young (or not) audience.

I really want everyone to rewatch Turtles 2, Turtles 3, that crappy 2007 "dark and gritty" CGI crap fest, The Next Mutation, the rock and roll tour (both of them), those awful straight to video educational shorts, the shitty Japanese OVA's and read the entire Image comics run where Ralph becomes the Shredder, Leo loses his hand, Splinter becoming a bat and Don becomes a cyborg. And then come back to me and say Megan Fox getting cast as April O'Neil was the worse thing to happen to this stupid fucking franchise.

Even with the cringe worthy Megan Fox, the generic explosions, and half assed writing nothing can be worse than the original 90's movies. Even as a child in the 90's I thought those were awful.
