Blue's Fire: A Warriors Story of what might have been
"Are you sure?"
"I am quite sure." Bluestar looked down at the bright ball of orange fur. Bluestar had found the kit by the twoleg fence during a patrol. It was now sleeping beside her in the den.
It was a bright, sunny greenleaf day in the Thunderclan territory. It may have been nice outside, but it was extremely hot. Bluestar was glad she had found this kit. Young ones shouldn't be kept out in the heat for long periods of time.
"I could ask one of the queens to watch him?" the young Spottedleaf offered, lifting up her paw to groom it. Bluestar looked at her sternly, and almost growled.
"Did you not hear me? This..this could be the prophecy. I don't want to lose it." Bluestar replied, her voice cracking slightly. "This means everything to the clan!"
Spottedleaf remembered this prophecy. It had come quite recently. She didn't know what it meant, and she wasn't sure that this tiny kit was the answer to what Starclan had said.
"Alright. Do call me if you need something." Spottedleaf agreed , backing out of the den. She didn't want to make the leader angry. She had been acting a little funny of late.
"My ball of fire, you will grow into a large flame. One that will save us." Bluestar said to the kit, looking at him fondly. She knew that he didn't know what she was saying, but she didn't care. "Firekit."
"Wow." Bluestar and Firekit stood atop the Highrock, the autumn wind blowing in their fur.
"Yes, Firekit. Look over there." Bluestar said, pointing away with her long tail.
"That's the forest!" Firekit said excitedly. Bluestar nodded. The forest did look quite nice today. It was a Leaf Fall day, but still a good one. The multicolored leaves seemed to dance in the breeze.
"Soon, you'll be able to go there. When you're an apprentice." Bluestar said, wrapping her tail around him.
She felt as if she didn't fully want him to be an apprentice, to be put in harm's way. But he must be the prophecy cat, and prophecies almost always contain danger. So she didn't say anything to him.
"Thank you for showing me up here."Firekit said, starting to purr. Bluestar nodded, guiding him back into her den now.
"It's fine, dear. Would you like some mouse?" Bluestar asked, picking up a mouse she had saved for later. She pushed it over to him, and he grabbed it with his small claws. Firekit excitedly bit into the mouse.
"This stuff is so good! The twolegs let me try some cat food, but it was disgusting! I love mouse." He said. Bluestar's eyes narrowed at his words. She still was mad at the twolegs for simply throwing him out. He could have found the clan in a nicer way.
"Yes. Stay here, Firekit, I'll be back in a moment."Bluestar meowed. She walked out of her den, and almost into Lionheart. She meowed in surprise, and backed up.
"Sorry there, Bluestar. Do you mind if I have a word?" He asked, backing away. Bluestar nodded, following him around to the back of the den. They sat beside the large gray rocks.
"What is it?"She asked, feeling awkward and oddly shy. Lionheart sighed.
"I just wanted to ask. Where have you been this past moon? I mean, I've seen you and everything, but you stay shut up in your den all day. If you don't feel like answering, it's fine." Lionheart finished awkwardly, as if he didn't want to even ask this question in the first place. Bluestar looked at him for a minute, reading his expression.
"I've been busy." Bluestar replied, trying to appear expressionless. The other cats were not sure about the little orange kit that had shown up in the clan a while ago. She didn't want to even say much. How would they feel about her having the prophecy cat? Of course, they didn't know about the prophecy. Only Spottedleaf and herself knew. Bluestar didn't want to tell.
"Is it about the kit you found?"Lionheart questioned, looking mildly interested. Bluestar sighed.
"What about him?"
"Well, shouldn't he be with the other kits in the nursery? If we are keeping him, that is." Lionheart said. Bluestar hissed and lifted a claw to strike him. Lionheart reacted quickly, and dodged her blow. He meowed, scared.
"Of course we're keeping him,"She replied."And I'm sorry I did that. I don't know where it came from." Bluestar put her paw back down, and licked her fur flat.
"Um, alright Bluestar. Maybe you should see Spottedleaf if you need someone to talk to."Lionheart suggested, walking away from her. He was frightened of the way she had acted, and now he was just waiting to leave. Bluestar dug her paws into the ground.
"He thinks I'm going crazy."She said to herself, trudging back into her den. Firekit was there, looking confused. He bounded over to her when she came inside the den and sat down.
"What's wrong, Mum?" He asked. Bluestar smiled when he spoke. No kit had called her that. Not since the short time she had her real kits. It made her feel better.
"Nothing, Firekit. I just have to rest." She said, stretching out on her bed of moss. Firekit walked over to her, and sat down next to her.
"Well, sleep then. I'll be here."Firekit mewed, putting a paw on her.
