No, it was a traditional clothes since the beginning, but by choice (like any other traditional clothes of every country) then the taliban made it an obligation, manipulating the words of the quran and sunnah.
I dont know why women still wear it after the end of taliban regime.

I was responding to an earlier comment. Nevertheless I still hope that one day all women will be free from the subjugation it represents, whether they wear one or not.

i know a lot of women who wear it by choice, but yes i hope that the ones who are victims of female mistreating (in afghanistan or any other part of the world, sadly to say), get rescued from their situation.
And that's henna, not nail polish (Look at the colour). It's largely used by devoted muslim women because it allows to make ablution (the wash before prayer) and being beautiful at the same time ;)
